Chapter 521 - 521. Dragonite vs Flygon

----

Just as its name suggested, the Flygon's body had a draconic elegance mixed with an insect-like silhouette. Of course, it wasn't an insect at all it was a full-fledged Dragon-type Pokémon.

Most of its sleek frame gleamed pale green, with twin green antennae curving from its head and two thin, translucent wings edged in crimson.

Its long tail was segmented into eight sections, alternating between light and dark green.

Living in arid, sun-scorched regions, Flygon had evolved red-lensed eye coverings to keep sand from blinding it.

Kai didn't know much about the species firsthand. Flygon wasn't native to Kanto or Johto, so he pulled out his Pokédex and aimed it at the hovering Pokémon.

Pokédex Entry: Flygon, the Desert Spirit Pokémon. A Ground/Dragon type. Flygon's powerful wingbeats whip up vast sandstorms, cloaking it from sight. It is rarely seen in the wild, often working in tandem with Krookodile to hunt prey concealed within its storms. Its wingbeats create a melodic hum, said to sound like a beautiful woman's song, luring unsuspecting travelers to their doom. Those entranced by the sound are drawn into the storm… never to emerge.

Snapping the Pokédex shut, Kai eyed the dragon, impressed.

So it's not just strong it's a cunning predator too. Works with partners, uses sound as bait… Yeah, this one's no pushover.

Sunny and Kai exchanged a nod. No referees here just trainer, Pokémon, and whatever nature threw at them.

With a sharp buzz of its wings, the shiny Flygon shot into the air, almost two meters of muscle and speed hovering effortlessly.

Dragonite flared its small but powerful wings and rose to meet it head-on.

No commands were given; instinct drove them into an immediate midair clash.

This wasn't like the earlier matches with Sunny's brothers. If those had been warm-ups, this was the main course a battle where every move mattered.

"Flygon! Supersonic!" Sunny called.

"Dragonite! Safeguard!" Kai countered.

Flygon's attack shimmered through the air in visible soundwaves, meant to scramble an opponent's senses.

But Dragonite was already enveloped in a protective green aura, Safeguard shielding it from confusion.

Sunny's lips pressed into a thin smile status tricks wouldn't work. Time for environmental control.

"Flygon, Sandstorm!"

The dragon's wings blurred, and within seconds, golden-brown sand swallowed the battlefield.

Visibility plummeted, the air grew heavy with grit, and both Pokémon were swallowed by the churning storm.

Kai's voice cut through the wind.

"Dragonite—Rain Dance!"

Dragonite roared to the sky, and dark clouds rolled in unnaturally fast. There was no thunder, only a sudden heavy downpour.

Raindrops the size of marbles pelted the battlefield, the wet sand turning to sticky mud almost instantly.

Anticipating the mess, Kai had already released Gardevoir to his side. With a graceful motion, she conjured a psychic barrier above Kai and Erika, keeping the mud from splattering them.

Sunny wasn't so lucky. Standing still to maintain focus on her commands, she was quickly speckled with wet, brown stains.

Her brothers, too absorbed in watching Flygon's struggle, didn't even notice they were getting coated. The younger kids in the crowd shrieked and scrambled for the shade of a nearby awning, though most were already partially covered in muck.

They didn't mind much. For many, this was the first time seeing such a fierce battle in person, and no one wanted to blink and miss something.

The two Pokémon in the center of it all had it worst. Even Flygon's protective eye lenses couldn't stop the clinging mud from hindering its sight.

Worse, its thin wings were now weighed down with a heavy coating of sludge, robbing it of lift.

It tried to shake the muck free, but its movements were sluggish too late.

"Dragonite—Dragon Rush!"

Dragonite climbed higher, mud trailing from its scales, then dove like a meteor. Sunny's voice rang out:

"Flygon, get airborne now!"

But Flygon couldn't take off in time. Just as it managed to shed some of the mud from its wings, Dragonite slammed into it with bone-rattling force.

The impact sent Flygon skidding across the muddy ground, Dragonite's own weight shaking off much of its remaining muck.

Kai wasted no time. "Back in the air!"

Dragonite soared upward again, not willing to risk fighting a Ground-type while stuck on the softened terrain.

The fight was far from over, but the momentum was already shifting.
