The night was extremely cold, the kind of cold that would keep one in bed for months because it had crept into the bones. A sharp gust of wind swept through the pathway just a few steps behind the restaurant, carrying with it the mouth watering smell of fried food and fruits. Squatting behind an old trash can, Lyla placed her thin arms around her protruding belly as she tried to find a comfortable position to remain in. She looked so small and unhealthy it was a wonder that her baby was still alive. She was a complete contrast to her once glowing self. Her hair was pulled back in a messy bun on top of her head,grime sticking to every strand protruding from her scalp and her lips were cracked from having to survive on scraps for months.
