Chapter 108 - The Price of Magic

When he returned to McCormick, he wandlessly cast a Confundus spell on him, imposing on him that he was assisting Evan taking out the shrapnel using tweezers. He brought out the gauze pads and bandages, and the other medicinal supplies he brought from the pharmacy and laid them out. They started with Cross. As Evan worked and gained confidence, it took less and less time to remove each piece of shrapnel. He didn't have to "replace" any material like he did with the soil; using Hermione's spell, the wound was cleaned and healed behind the shrapnel as it was removed. He did not heal the last ¼ inch and left them as an unfortunate reminder that they had been wounded, and for future medical staff to record. There were too many people who knew they were wounded, and it would be too difficult to explain how they were healed with no scars in such a short time. As it was going to take nearly two weeks to get back to base, time itself and the poultices would be able to explain the healing. Three hours later, the shrapnel from both Cross and LT were removed. He prepared new poultices for them and wrapped them up.

After washing up, McCormick and Evan brought out their food rations. Evan woke the Ambassador, changed her poultice, and then they ate. Then McCormick and Evan switched with Bremmer, Tristan and Xavier so they could eat. As the sun was setting, they finalized their packing. Tristan, Xavier and Bremmer made some stretchers out of some left-over wood planks and canvas. They put LT and Cross on the stretchers. Bremmer put the transmitter on his back, McCormick and Evan put their backpacks on. Evan grabbed his Goblin sword in the expanded space, disillusioned it, and attached it to the backpack within easy reach. He slipped a few wooden stakes in his belt pack, near the extra magazines. Evan and McCormick picked up Cross and, along with Tristan, carefully trekked down to the river where the dinghies and skiffs were. Evan and McCormick then made their way back to camp to collect the rest.

On their way back to the river, Evan sensed a vampire and wizard 'move' into their path. Without thought, Evan dropped his side of the LTs stretcher, invoking Retsu (control over time and space), popping to the vampire first and putting a wooden stake in its heart, then popping over to the wizard, cutting off their wand hand. He then returned time to its normal rhythm, with his sword at the wizard's neck.

McCormick's POV - McCormick simultaneously saw two men appear about 10 feet in front of him, felt Fenix drop his end of the stretcher, and was about to lower his end to raise his rifle when he saw a wooden stake appear in one man's chest and heard a thump near the second man. There was Fenix with a sword at the man's throat. "What the…." He exclaimed as he was completing to raise his weapon to the ready.

The Ambassador's POV - The Ambassador, who was walking parallel to this 'Fenix', wasn't paying much attention to her surroundings – she was paying more attention to the path directly in front of her, as it was dark. All of a sudden, she heard the clatter of the stretcher as one end hit the ground. She quickly turned her head and started to crouch when she saw ahead of her, not 15 feet, a man with a wooden stake it their heart who then turned to ash and disappeared, and then heard a thump from nearby. Turning her head, she saw Fenix there with a sword at the man's throat. In her mind, she said "What the .." as she heard those same words verbalized by McCormick. The Ambassador, who lived in Bosnia all her life, a neighboring country to Romania, had heard stories of vampires, but had never thought them real. Now she realized they were.

"Not a word, wizard" Evan said to the man on the ground. "Bremmer!" he whispered harshly. "Bremmer – put a tourniquet on that hand, then bind him." He commanded. Bremmer quickly complied while Xavier somewhat clumsily provided cover. "Bremmer – put some tape over his mouth as well. We'll question him while on the move. McCormick. We should get a move on – there may be more like them nearby." He said. "Are these those 'extras' you mentioned earlier today, Fenix" McCormick asked. "Yup" Evan replied. "Didn't you say there were seven or eight of them?" McCormick asked softly. "Yup – more moving, less talking. Some of them may have very sensitive hearing." Fenix responded. "How..?" McCormick began asking. "Later – now is not the time" Evan replied, as he went back to pick up the stretcher. Bremmer prodded their bound prisoner forward. Evan made sure to step on the wizard's wand as he past by.
