The Forge's purifying fire was absolute. It did not burn flesh; it burned intent, karma, and soul-deep flaws. And right now, it was trying to incinerate the parasitic bond that tied the Celestial Key to a mortal girl's desperate obsession.
But it had to go through Ye Chen first.
The crimson flames smashed into his chest like a tidal wave of molten iron. Ye Chen's knees buckled under the sheer spiritual weight, his boots grinding into the obsidian dais. The green jade beneath his collarbone shrieked, glowing a blinding, toxic yellow as the Forge tried to rip the Soul-Locking Knot out of his meridians.
"Ye Chen, stop!" Xiao Mei screamed, her voice tearing her throat. She clawed at the stone, trying to push herself in front of him. "Let it take the knot! If you protect it, the array will kill you!"
"I don't care!" Ye Chen roared, his voice vibrating with a raw, earth-shattering defiance that overpowered the roaring flames.
Blood began to weep from his pores, instantly vaporizing in the heat. The parasitic crimson rune that Xiao Mei had buried in his core was throbbing, glowing through the skin of his wrists like a branded iron. The Forge was pulling it one way; Ye Chen was clamping down on it with everything he had.
He forced his eyes open, staring through the blinding fire down at the girl trembling at his feet.
"You thought I would leave you?" Ye Chen gasped, his amber eyes burning with a ferocious, unyielding light. "You thought ascending to the heavens mattered to me if you weren't there?"
Xiao Mei froze. The terror in her dark eyes fractured, giving way to a shock so profound it stopped her breath.
"I didn't want the Key! I didn't want the gates!" Ye Chen yelled, his voice cracking as his golden Yang Qi began to bleed directly into the crimson fire. He reached down through the roaring flames and seized her wrists, wrapping his scorching hands directly over the Soul-Locking Knot she had placed on him. "I just wanted to survive with you! If you wanted to chain my soul to yours, Xiao Mei, you didn't need a forbidden rune. You only had to ask."
He didn't try to purge the parasitic knot. He didn't try to sever the tainted connection.
Instead, Ye Chen violently inverted his spiritual flow. He took the absolute, primordial power of the Celestial Key and willingly, unconditionally surrendered it to her control. He fed the parasite. He opened every gate in his meridians and poured his soul entirely into the tether she had built.
The Forge hesitated.
A parasitic knot relied on a host's subconscious resistance to maintain its grip. But when the host yielded completely—when the resistance vanished and was replaced by absolute, willing devotion—the knot ceased to be a shackle.
It became a bridge.
Beneath Ye Chen's hands, the dark, jagged crimson rune on Xiao Mei's wrist suddenly shattered. But it didn't disappear. The fragments dissolved and reformed, weaving themselves into a breathtaking, luminous lattice of pure gold and deep azure.
Their Dual Harmony was no longer forced. It evolved.
A shockwave of absolute, blinding resonance erupted from their joined hands. It was a Qi signature so pure, so ancient, and so overwhelmingly powerful that it defied the very parameters of the Trial of Fire.
"Impossible," Yue whispered from beyond the barrier, her violet eyes wide with unprecedented shock. The silver hairpin slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the stone. "He didn't just accept the flaw... he assimilated it. He rewrote the law of the array."
The Forge of the Heart let out a deafening, mechanical shriek.
The red glass of the massive mirror began to spider-web. The array was designed to burn away impurities, but it could not comprehend a bond where the flaw itself had become the foundation of absolute perfection.
"Anomaly..." the Forge's disembodied voice distorted, glitching like a breaking bell. "Purity... threshold... exceeded."
CRACK.
The Mirror of Desires exploded.
Millions of shards of red glass blew outward, but before they could strike anyone in the cavern, the evolved Yin-Yang resonance radiating from Ye Chen and Xiao Mei caught them in mid-air. The shards dissolved into a torrential vortex of pure, crimson spiritual liquid—the condensed reward of the Second Gate.
The vortex spiraled downward, crashing into Ye Chen and Xiao Mei.
They didn't burn. As they breathed in the crimson mist, their battered meridians rapidly expanded, repairing the damage from the Shadow Sect and the transit array. The oppressive heat of the cavern vanished, replaced by a profound, echoing stillness.
When the light faded, Ye Chen dropped to one knee, panting heavily. The green glow of the Key had settled into a calm, steady rhythm, beating in perfect time with Xiao Mei's heart.
Xiao Mei didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder. She was crying—not silent, stoic tears, but heavy, racking sobs of sheer, overwhelming relief and absolute devotion.
"I've got you," Ye Chen whispered, wrapping his arms fiercely around her, resting his cheek against her dark hair. "I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."
Li Rong let out a long, slow whistle from the back of the cavern, sheathing her twin dao with a sharp clack.
"Well," the crimson hunter smirked, shaking her head in reluctant awe. "If I wasn't already burning from the inside out, that might have actually melted my heart."
Yue didn't smile. Her gaze was fixed on the space where the mirror had been.
With the glass shattered, the frame of the mirror now served as an open archway leading deeper into the heart of the volcano. The path was illuminated by a sickly, pulsing violet light.
And from the depths of that corridor, the slow, rhythmic sound of heavy, armored clapping echoed into the quiet cavern.
"Bravo," a voice rasped. It was a voice Ye Chen recognized. A voice that belonged to a man who should have been at the bottom of the White Serpent River.
Commander Feng stepped out of the shadows, his obsidian armor cracked and leaking black water, half his face burned away by the transit array's backlash. In his remaining hand, he dragged a familiar, shattered ironwood pipe.
"You broke the mirror, boy," Feng hissed, a horrifying, ruinous smile twisting his ruined face. "But you forgot to lock the door behind you."
