[ Chapter IV (4): "THE SYSTEM'S MISSION" ]

[ DAILY MISSION: 08/02/2006 ]

[ DESCRIPTION: CAST THE WAND-LIGHTING CHARM, THE LEVITATION CHARM, AND THE SEVERING CHARM 1,000 TIMES EACH; TIME LIMIT, WITHIN THE DAY ]

[ REWARD: 50 SYSTEM COINS, 100 EXPERIENCE POINTS, RANDOM ORDINARY SKILL ]

[ "What?" ] Matthias stares at the text in front of him, reading it before then getting confused all over. In his hand is a hotdog, the fourth one he bought, eaten halfway and in the process of completely getting devoured by him.

After the escapade in the small bodega of Mr. Mullein, Matthias who's hungry to the point of wanting to devour anything, bought for himself 4 hotdogs alongside a bottle of mountain dew. In total it cost him 11.58$.

But thanks to his newfound friendship with Mr. Mullein, the store owner apparently, and perhaps as a welcome gift to him, the price was dropped to 10$. Matthias who realized he's broke, felt thankful. What a great guy.

And at the moment, his dinner time in Gotham's Park is being interrupted rudely by the System's message. At the least it's a good kind of interruption.

[ "Damn it." ] Though he felt annoyed and cheated, especially because he had already done what the mission wanted him to do. Hours prior, to the point that he was knocked unconscious by his body.

Sighing to himself, Matthias then bit into his hotdog, eating all of it in one-go before then throwing the plastic in his hand into the trashbin besides him. Walking away with a wand in hand, he was ready to practice magic.

Though he still felt cheated by the System, at least, he now has a clear way to acquire currency, experience, and whatever kind of skill the System would give.

[ "Perfect timing, System. Perfect bloody fuckin' timing." ] On the way back he would step into shit, almost get run over by a drunk driver in broad daylight, and almost get beaten up by wannabe thugs. Lovely day, lovely city— that's Gotham for you.

[ -----| SCENE BREAK |----- ]

[ "This shitty city..." ] Matthias who ran away from a pack of stray dogs could be seen cursing at the place, the calories he intake from the hotdogs probably having already burnt out from running all over the city. [ "Cursed luck...!" ]

And the worse out if it all is that, no, it's not the fact that on the way his slippers stepped onto dog or cat shit. No, instead it is the fact that he wasn't able to gather any useful intel about the universe of DC, or even about the situation in Gotham— aside from crooked cops that is.

On the way there, he did run past thousands or so of colorful campaign posters and flyers. Of different individuals, none being people he knows off; but judging from the shit eating grin on their face, they're probably assholes with degrees and/or backers.

Doing his best to wash away their faces from his surface thoughts, Matthias then climbed the stairs and made his way to his room. On the way he smiled warmly and greeted a mother-and-daughter pair, his neighbors, living only two rooms away. [ "Good afternoon!" ]

Judging from the face of the mother, which is dressed in a waitress-like uniform themed yellow and red, is confused. Not responding. The backpack-wearing child on the other hand waved back enthusiastically. [ "Hello!" ]

The girl who's a practical copy of her mother looked joyful which is in sharp contrast to her mother. The mother in seeing her daughter waved at the stranger felt horrified, as she then quickly pulled her daughter inside their apartment; scolding her about stranger danger, or something along those lines. To the utmost confusion of Matthias of course.

[ "The hell was that about?" ] Matthias who hasn't gotten a clear view of his current appearance couldn't help but raise one of his brows in disbelief. Because everyday before going out of the house, he makes himself look presentable— though he forgot to do that said habit of his today.

Still in confusion, he then made his way inside his apartment's room, having forgotten to look after due to the room being just that messy to look at. In the midst of the messy, disgusting, dirty room, he quickly noticed the mirror which shows his current appearance. [ "That... explains." ]

Without a filter, in broad daylight, the mirror showed him his mustache and growing goatee, something he noticed previously by him touching his face while reading the books; but now, he noticed how really unkempt it is.

Alongside everything, from top to bottom, everything looked like a disgusting mess. Looking like a homeless man, or a common thug, or someone who had just experienced divorce for the 4th time; that is how he looks, that is what.

[ "Oh shit, this me." ] Matthias looks at the mirror in disgust, how could he not notice this before? Perhaps this answers why people kept looking at him warily, perhaps this is why the dogs chased him, why young thugs tried fighting him.

That actually explains also why the other citizens sometimes cross the street whenever he walks. Apparently, he is just that scary looking. And also ugly, no, not ugly that's a strong word; but is instead unkempt, unshaven.

And without proper care in the body department. And the face. And the hands. And the feet. And the wardrobe... Actually, everything. In everything department. How did this fucker lived up to 23 years? Matthias has no idea.

Sighing to himself, he has no idea where to start with fixing his new life. Actually missing his old life which is normal, secured, and without worry about the future. But then he remembered about acquiring magic in this new world, and instantly, that dismay quickly turned into optimism.

So optimistic in fact that he pulled out his wand and casted the Wand-Lighting Charm without hesitation, having remembered the task which the System gave him; apparently a thousand of those, plus a thousand of the Levitation Charm, and a thousand of the Severing Charm casted will give him experience, currency, and skill.

From how the System works in the stories that he had read about, those said skills may be supernatural in nature, powerful, broken, or even magical— practically a cheat. Though he doesn't know what the System considers as ordinary, but still, he is looking forward to it. [ "Lumos!" ]

[ WAND-LIGHTING CHARM: 1,021/1,000 ]

[ LEVITATION CHARM: 1,009/1,000 ]

[ SEVERING CHARM: 998/1,000 ]

Fuck this mission.

Matthias had never been so awake before in his entire life. Blinded by excitement and a promise to something magical, he spent for what felt like eternity casting the same said 3 spells. To the point that he reached mastery with them, not at all needing to imagine that much, and to pronounce the incantation to have a decent looking effect.

Which is a great thing. Now Matthias only needs to worry about the weird stares the occasional building neighbors are giving him, he easily fixed that by closing the curtains. Then he continued practicing magic as per tasked.

And after that, he kept levitating a crumpled ball of newspaper up and down hundreds of times, repeatedly, then in boredom he moved to a chair, the wooden desk, then a wardrobe because he could. Doing all of that until he completed the quota.

The more he does so, the more he becomes bored, but also excited, because it actually means there's great progression in his journey of wanting to be the best wizard there is. Before then moving to the Severing Charm.

For him, the Severing Charm is most difficult, even more difficult to the somewhat unfamiliar Mending Charm he read about in-between his casting. He learnt that one, and it fixed the peeling wallpapers on his walls, great spell, and also great explanation from Miranda Goshawk.

Due to the difficulty of the Severing Charm, out of the 3, it took the longest to complete. And also the most repetitive because he has been cutting and tearing down the same old newspaper to the last of it's atoms since the start. Poor newspaper, could practically qualify as one at this point.

[ "DIFFINDO!" ] He yelled out with excitement mixed with barely controlled temperance. Added the slashing motion it caused a white slash-like light to shoot from his wand, shredding the poor paper to pieces— ink practically visible to this point, with a squint of eyelids perhaps.

Oh, and another news before Matthias continues casting, the last spell actually to end it all. He realized mid thoughts that this new body of his is short-sighted, wonderful, he hadn't payed attention to it. But apparently, he is; everything is blurry for him, those far away from.

This is also called near-sightedness from what he could remember, and due to memories of the old and new Matthias interconnecting. The new Matthias didn't even realize that he was, the transition was that good.

Thankfully, thankfully. The System is a deity, someone who sees all, knows all, and had prepared everything for him. In the starter pack it gave him, in there was the most common and confusing item there could be amongst the magical ones— a glass, prescribed perfectly for Matthias' use.

So that's that, end the padding. [ "DIFFNDO!!" ]

[ PLAYER HAS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE DAILY MISSION GIVEN BY THE SYSTEM, REWARDS IS BEING GIVEN ACCORDINGLY ]

[ FUN FACT: The Severing Charm (Diffindo) is invented in the fifteenth century by a seamstress and witch, her name is Delfina Crimp. She made the spell because other spells pior to the Severing Charm either burnt or shred the clothings she made. A rival Muggle clothes maker, Snickerton, found out that she was a witch, so her shop was raided; tied her up, nearly killed her. However she convinced them to release her to scratch a wart on her skin. When given the opportunity she escaped, the wart was revealed to actually be her hidden wand. She disappeared in that said town alongside a sack of gold. Perhaps out of anger, Crimp cursed Snickerton's subsequent creations to be all found sliced up, or perhaps she did the slicing up herself without being found out. ]
