Chapter 221 - Evolved Chimera V

Battle 1

The moment Fynris activated his Aura Blade, the atmosphere around him changed.

A thin layer of aura enveloped his sword, sharpening its edge and strengthening its structure. Beside him, Orin tightened his grip on his spear as magic coursed through his body.

The Volcanic Chimera watched them approach.

It didn't roar this time.

Instead, it lowered its body, its burning mane shrinking momentarily as the magma beneath its scales began flowing toward its front legs.

"Fynris, don't rush in blindly!" Quenlor shouted from behind. "It's preparing something!"

Fynris narrowed his eyes.

"I see it."

BOOM!

The Chimera launched itself forward.

Despite its enormous size, its movements were frighteningly fast. Its massive foreleg slammed into the ground where Fynris had been standing a moment earlier, shattering the earth and sending a wave of molten fragments in every direction.

Fynris twisted aside, his aura-covered sword cutting through the smaller fragments before they could reach him.

Orin, however, charged straight through the dust.

"Iron Body!"

A metallic sheen spread across his skin as he accelerated toward the Chimera's exposed flank. He thrust his spear toward the gap between two layers of volcanic scales.

CLANG!

The spear struck its target, but the impact produced little more than a shallow crack.

Orin's eyes widened.

That hide is ridiculously tough!

Before he could pull his spear free, the Chimera twisted its body and swung its tail toward him.

"Orin, move!"

Fynris dashed forward.

His Aura Blade flashed.

SHING!

The sword struck the incoming tail, redirecting its trajectory just enough for Orin to duck beneath it.

The tail smashed into the ground behind them.

Orin immediately withdrew his spear and rolled away, narrowly escaping the molten cracks spreading across the impact zone.

"Thanks!" he called.

"Save it for later."

Fynris adjusted his stance, his gaze fixed on the Chimera's body.

The earlier strike had revealed something important. The scales were exceptionally hard, but the joints connecting them were less protected.

He glanced at Orin.

"Target its joints. Don't waste your strength attacking the scales directly."

Orin grinned.

"Now that's something I can work with."

The Chimera seemed to understand their plan.

Its head turned toward the two fighters, and its crocodilian jaws slowly opened.

Orange light flooded its throat.

"GET BACK!" Quenlor shouted.

Fynris and Orin immediately separated.

A stream of molten rock erupted from the Chimera's mouth, sweeping across the battlefield like a burning river. It wasn't the scattered projectile attack from before. This time, the beast deliberately dragged its head from side to side, forcing the two melee fighters away from its body.

Fynris leaped over a narrow stream of lava, landing on a broken slab of stone.

Orin wasn't as fortunate.

The molten stream cut off his retreat, leaving him standing on a shrinking patch of solid ground.

"Seriously?!"

He drove his spear into the earth and vaulted himself over the approaching lava, landing heavily on the other side.

The Chimera immediately turned its head toward him.

But before it could fire again, FWOOOSH!

Several water-infused arrows pierced the air.

Quenlor had repositioned himself on higher ground, firing directly toward the Chimera's eyes.

The beast snapped its jaws shut and tilted its head away. The arrows struck its brow, bursting into clouds of dense mist.

"Zerik!" Quenlor called. "How long do you need?"

Zerik, who had been observing the Chimera's movements from behind a shattered rock formation, flicked a magical card between his fingers.

"Depends. Are you asking how long until I understand this thing, or how long until I do something incredibly stupid?"

"Zerik!"

"Right, right. Working on it."

He pulled another card from his sleeve.

Unlike Quenlor's elemental arrows or Fynris's aura-enhanced sword, Zerik's magic worked differently. He could enhance objects and manipulate the battlefield through carefully prepared tricks.

He examined the Chimera's legs, the glowing cracks along its body, and the patches of solid ground between the lava streams.

Then he smiled.

"Got it."

He threw three cards into the air.

They scattered in different directions before sticking to the ground around the Chimera.

"Let's see how you like losing your footing."

Zerik snapped his fingers.

The cards flashed.

The stone beneath the Chimera's rear legs suddenly fractured as the objects Zerik had enhanced released their stored force. One leg sank slightly into the broken ground.

It wasn't enough to bring the beast down.

But it was enough to make it stumble.

"NOW!" Zerik shouted.

Fynris moved instantly.

His boots struck the ground, and he surged forward with his sword held low. Rather than aiming at the Chimera's heavily armored torso, he angled toward its front leg.

The beast recovered faster than expected.

Its head swung toward him, jaws opening wide enough to swallow a man whole.

Fynris didn't retreat.

At the last possible moment, he changed direction.

The Chimera snapped at empty air.

Fynris slid beneath its head and brought his sword upward.

KRAAANG!

His Aura Blade struck the joint behind the front leg.

A thin crack appeared between the volcanic scales.

For the first time, the Chimera recoiled.

Its roar shook the battlefield.

"That worked!" Orin exclaimed.

"Then let's make it hurt!" Fynris replied.

Orin charged from the opposite side, his spear held behind him.

"Metal Storm!"

The magic around his spear erupted.

Dozens of steel shards materialized around him, spinning in the air before launching toward the Chimera's exposed joints. Some shattered against its armor, but others struck the same weakened area Fynris had cut.

The Chimera's leg buckled slightly.

Orin lunged, thrusting his spear into the opening.

This time, the tip penetrated between the scales.

A thin line of dark, molten blood seeped from the wound.

The beast went still.

For one brief moment, nobody moved.

Then its burning mane exploded outward.

"EVERYONE, GET AWAY!" Quenlor screamed.

The Chimera slammed both front paws into the ground.

BOOOOOOM!

A circular shockwave of heat and molten rock burst outward from its body. The ground split apart, throwing chunks of stone into the air. Fynris crossed his sword in front of himself, bracing against the blast, while Orin reinforced his body with Iron Body and dug his spear into the ground.

Quenlor leaped backward from his elevated position.

Zerik threw a card beneath his feet, using its enhanced force to propel himself away from the expanding wave.

Even so, the heat was overwhelming.

When the dust finally settled, the four fighters found themselves scattered across the ruined battlefield.

Fynris was on one knee, his sword still in hand.

Orin had landed beside a fractured boulder, his armor-like magical reinforcement flickering.

Quenlor's bow remained intact, but his breathing had grown heavier.

Zerik dusted himself off.

"Okay," he muttered. "So it doesn't appreciate being stabbed. Good to know."

Nobody laughed.

Because the Chimera was standing again.

The wound on its leg was already beginning to seal. Magma flowed through the cracks in its body, gathering around the damaged joint and hardening into a fresh layer of volcanic material.

Fynris stared at it.

It's using its own magma to repair its armor.

The Chimera slowly raised its head.

Its gaze passed over Orin, then Fynris, before settling on Quenlor.

Then it looked at Zerik.

The beast had stopped attacking randomly.

It had recognized their roles.

Quenlor was disrupting its vision. Fynris was identifying weaknesses. Orin was exploiting those weaknesses with overwhelming physical pressure.

And Zerik, he was making all of it possible.

The Chimera lowered its body again, but this time it didn't charge.

Instead, the magma surrounding its feet began spreading across the battlefield in thin, branching streams.

Quenlor immediately understood.

"It's trying to separate us!"

The lava spread between the four fighters, dividing the ground into isolated platforms. The Chimera moved carefully through the molten terrain as if it were nothing more than ordinary earth.

Fynris tried to approach, but a fresh stream of lava cut across his path.

Orin attempted to circle around the other side, only for the Chimera to swing its head toward him and force him back with a burst of molten rock.

Quenlor fired two arrows in rapid succession.

Both struck the Chimera's face, bursting into mist.

But the beast didn't even flinch.

It had already closed its eyes.

"Oh, come on!" Quenlor muttered.

The Chimera opened its jaws.

This time, the glowing mass inside its throat wasn't aimed at the group.

It was aimed directly at the ground beneath Quenlor.

"QUENLOR!" Zerik shouted.

A concentrated blast of lava erupted.

Quenlor threw himself sideways as the elevated platform beneath him disintegrated. He caught the edge of a lower ledge with one hand, his bow still clutched in the other.

The Chimera immediately turned toward him.

It had deliberately targeted the battlefield's safest vantage point.

And now Quenlor was trapped.

Fynris started forward, but the lava streams blocked his path.

Orin gritted his teeth.

"Move! I'll break through!"

He raised his spear, preparing another Metal Storm.

"Don't!" Zerik shouted. "That's exactly what it wants!"

Orin froze.

Zerik's eyes moved rapidly across the battlefield, following the streams of magma.

The Chimera wasn't merely separating them. It was controlling where each fighter could move, forcing them into predictable routes while keeping itself between them.

For a creature of its size, its tactical awareness was terrifying.

Zerik slowly reached into his sleeve.

A small, crooked smile appeared on his face.

"All right, you oversized barbecue."

He pulled out a handful of magical cards.

"Let's play a game."

He threw the cards, not at the Chimera, but at the scattered pieces of stone surrounding it.

One landed beside its rear foot.

Another stuck to a broken pillar.

A third disappeared beneath a fragment of volcanic rock.

The Chimera noticed the movement.

Its head turned toward Zerik.

Exactly as he had hoped.

"Hey! Over here!"

Zerik raised both hands and waved.

"Come on, then. Let's see how smart you really are."

The Chimera's burning mane surged upward.

It abandoned Quenlor and turned toward Zerik.

Fynris immediately understood that Zerik was buying them time.

"Orin! With me!"

The two fighters began moving along opposite sides of the lava streams, searching for another opening.

Quenlor pulled himself onto the lower ledge and forced himself upright. His arms trembled from the strain, but he raised his bow once more.

The four fighters were bruised, exhausted, and separated.

The Chimera had the advantage.

But Zerik's cards were now scattered throughout the battlefield, and the Trickster had finally found a way to turn the creature's intelligence against it.

He grinned as the enormous beast approached.

"Your move."

As this battle continues.
