Chapter 223 - Evolved Chimera VII

Battle 2

The Venomous Chimera stood before them, its six thin legs digging into the ground as it slowly shifted its weight.

Three of them preferred close combat, which meant getting near those blades and that tail was unavoidable. One successful sting could change the entire battle. Sylra would have to remain alert, ready to remove the venom before it spread too far.

"Whatever you do, don't rush in recklessly," Junith warned, glancing at Doran.

Doran tightened his grip around Moltenheart.

"Why are you looking at me?"

"Because I'm talking to you."

"Right. Fair enough."

Brian stood a little behind them, watching the Chimera carefully. He had fought alongside Doran before, and Junith was already familiar with his way of thinking. Their coordination wasn't perfect, but they understood one another well enough.

Brian didn't seem particularly interested in rushing forward. His eyes followed the Chimera's movements, waiting for an opportunity to use Loop.

Junith took a moment to observe the creature.

Its tail was the immediate problem. The scorpion stinger could reach them even when they thought they were outside its striking range. The mantis blades made approaching from the front equally dangerous.

"We need to keep it occupied," she said. "Don't let it isolate anyone. And watch that tail."

Doran nodded enthusiastically.

"Got it!"

The Chimera didn't give them any more time to discuss their strategy.

Its six legs suddenly propelled it forward.

"Move!"

The tail swept across the battlefield, forcing all four to scatter. The stinger struck the ground where Junith had been standing moments earlier, leaving a green residue behind.

Doran barely avoided the attack. He rolled to the side, pushed himself up, and immediately charged back toward the beast.

"Doran! Wait!"

Too late.

Moltenheart slammed into one of the Chimera's legs.

CLANG!

The impact made the creature stagger slightly. Doran grinned, pulling his hammer back for another strike.

"See? It's not that..."

The tail came swinging around.

"...easy!"

He ducked just in time. The stinger passed over his head, but the Chimera followed up with one of its blade-arms.

Junith rushed in from the side, deflecting the attack and forcing the creature to turn toward her.

"Could you stop making my job harder?"

"I'm helping!"

"You're giving me more work!"

Junith stepped back as the Chimera's second blade came down. She avoided it by a narrow margin before moving in again, striking at the joints along its front legs.

Her attacks were precise. She wasn't trying to overpower the creature. Instead, she kept it occupied, forcing it to constantly adjust its position.

That gave Doran the openings he needed.

He brought Moltenheart down against its side.

Another heavy impact.

The Chimera recoiled, but its tail immediately curled forward.

"Behind you!" Junith shouted.

Doran turned just in time to block with his hammer. The stinger struck Moltenheart, producing a sharp metallic clang. He was pushed backward several steps.

"That thing really doesn't know when to quit!"

"Neither do you!" Junith replied.

From a distance, Sylra watched their movements carefully. She kept her magic in reserve, ready to intervene if anyone was struck. There was no reason to waste her strength yet, especially when the Chimera hadn't revealed the full extent of its abilities.

Brian finally moved.

He approached from the opposite side, drawing the Chimera's attention away from Doran. One of its blade-arms swung toward him, but he slipped past the attack and landed a clean strike against its exposed side.

"Now, Doran!"

Doran didn't need to be told twice.

He rushed forward, raising Moltenheart with both hands.

"Molten Seal!"

The hammer struck the same area Brian had attacked.

BOOM!

The Chimera's body lurched sideways. Its legs scraped against the ground as it struggled to regain balance.

Brian activated Loop.

The moment was brief, but the effect was immediate. The opening they had created became another opportunity for Doran to press his attack. He swung Moltenheart again, landing a second powerful blow before the Chimera could properly recover.

"That's more like it!" Doran shouted.

But the Chimera was learning.

Its cobra hood spread wider, and its head snapped toward Doran. The scorpion tail rose high above its body before shooting downward.

Doran jumped away, but the stinger grazed his arm.

"Ah!"

He landed awkwardly, stumbling as he tried to regain his footing.

"Doran!"

Junith moved between him and the Chimera, intercepting the next blade strike. Brian also stepped forward, forcing the creature to divide its attention.

Sylra was already approaching Doran.

"Let me see."

"It's nothing. Just a scratch."

"Don't argue."

A faint green discoloration had begun spreading around the wound. Sylra placed her hand near it, releasing a soft glow. The venom was drawn out before it could spread any further.

Doran flexed his arm.

"See? Good as new!"

"Then try not to get stung again."

He gave her an awkward grin before turning back toward the Chimera.

The fight continued.

Doran remained the most aggressive of the four. He repeatedly tried to get close enough to bring Moltenheart down, sometimes landing devastating blows and sometimes finding himself forced to retreat. Junith stayed close enough to cover his mistakes, redirecting the Chimera's attacks whenever he overcommitted.

Brian supported them from the front, carefully choosing when to engage. He activated Loop again after Junith managed to stagger one of the Chimera's legs. Doran took advantage of the opening, striking the creature before it could recover.

The Chimera stumbled.

"Keep going!" Junith called.

Doran rushed forward, hammer raised.

The creature suddenly twisted its body.

Its tail shot sideways, forcing Doran to abandon his attack. He barely escaped the stinger, but the movement left him exposed to one of its blade-arms.

Brian stepped in and blocked the strike.

The impact pushed him back, but it gave Junith enough time to attack the Chimera's front legs. She struck twice, then retreated before the tail could reach her.

Brian activated Loop once more.

Doran immediately followed up, driving Moltenheart into the creature's side.

The Chimera let out a harsh hiss.

Its movements were becoming more erratic. It was taking damage, but it wasn't slowing down as much as they had hoped.

Then Junith noticed something.

"Those sacs beneath its body..."

She watched the translucent green organs pulse.

"That's where the venom is coming from. Be careful when you're underneath it."

"Would be nice if it stopped trying to stab us long enough for me to take a look!" Doran shouted.

"Then make it stop moving!"

"Easy for you to say!"

Junith shook her head and moved in again.

She attacked from the side, keeping the Chimera's attention fixed on her. Brian moved to the other side, looking for another opening. Doran waited for the right moment, gripping Moltenheart tightly.

The Chimera raised both blade-arms.

Junith retreated.

Brian advanced.

The creature turned toward him, exposing its side.

"Now!"

Doran charged.

"Molten Seal!"

His hammer struck with tremendous force. The Chimera was driven backward, its legs scraping across the ground.

Brian activated Loop at the moment of impact.

Doran followed through with another swing, striking the same spot before the creature could regain its balance.

A crack appeared across its outer armor.

"Finally!" Doran exclaimed.

But the Chimera's reaction was far from what they expected.

Its body stiffened.

The green sacs beneath its abdomen began to glow brighter, and a strange pressure spread through the battlefield.

Junith immediately backed away.

"Something's happening!"

The Chimera lowered its head.

The corrupted aura erupted from its body.

The pressure hit all four of them at once.

Their movements faltered. Their vision blurred, and a burning sensation spread through their bodies. It felt as though venom had entered their bloodstreams all at once, spreading through their veins and consuming their strength.

Doran dropped to one knee.

"What... is this?"

Junith tried to move, but her legs barely responded. Brian staggered backward, struggling to keep his balance.

Even Sylra was affected.

She pressed a hand against her chest, her breathing becoming uneven. The corrupted energy had poisoned all of them, and the effects were worsening by the second.

The Chimera advanced.

Its six legs moved steadily, its blade-arms raised. The tail curled above its body, ready to strike.

For a moment, none of them could do anything.

Doran tried to stand.

His body refused to cooperate.

The Chimera suddenly lunged toward him, one enormous blade-arm coming down.

"Doran!" Junith shouted.

Sylra forced herself to move.

Her own body was burning, her vision unsteady, but she knew she couldn't let the attack land. She gathered what remained of her strength and focused her magic on Doran.

A soft glow surrounded him.

The venom began to recede.

Doran gasped as his strength returned just enough for him to move. He rolled away from the descending blade, which crashed into the ground beside him.

He pushed himself up, still unsteady.

"That was... close."

He looked toward Sylra.

She was struggling to remain standing, but she had managed to save him and cured him as he stood again.

The Chimera turned toward Brian and Junith.

Both were still poisoned. Neither could properly defend themselves.

Doran tightened his grip around Moltenheart.

"Not happening!"

He charged forward, placing himself between the Chimera and his teammates.

The creature swung its blade-arm.

Doran blocked with Moltenheart.

The impact drove him backward, but he held his ground. The scorpion tail followed, sweeping toward him from above.

He shifted his hammer and managed to deflect it, though the force sent him stumbling.

"Come on, then!"

He struck the Chimera's leg, forcing it to step away from Junith and Brian.

Behind him, Sylra was fighting through the effects of the corrupted aura. She knew she couldn't help anyone else until she could stabilize herself.

She closed her eyes and concentrated.

Her magic slowly spread through her body, counteracting the poison. The burning sensation began to fade, and her breathing steadied.

She immediately turned toward Junith.

The poison was still affecting her badly. Her movements were sluggish, and she could barely lift her spear.

Sylra reached her and began treating her.

"Just... stay with me," Sylra said, her voice strained.

Junith managed a small nod.

The healing took a few moments, but the venom finally began to fade.

Once Junith could stand properly, Sylra moved toward Brian.

He was still trying to defend himself, even with his movements impaired. Doran was doing his best to keep the Chimera occupied, but he couldn't hold it off forever.

Brian stumbled as the creature's tail came toward him.

Doran rushed in and struck the tail aside with Moltenheart.

"Brian! Move!"

Brian regained his footing and stepped back.

Sylra reached him moments later, placing her hand against his arm. Her magic flowed through him, removing the remaining poison.

Brian took a deep breath.

"Thanks, Sylra."

She nodded, visibly exhausted.

The four of them were finally back on their feet.

But the Chimera was still standing.

Doran looked at it, then at his teammates.

"Everyone alright?"

"More or less," Junith replied.

"Then let's finish this."

Brian studied the Chimera again. Its corrupted aura had weakened their formation, but it had also revealed something important. The creature's movements became more predictable whenever it committed to an attack.

They needed to exploit that.

"Junith," Brian called. "Keep it focused on you. Doran, wait for my signal."

Junith nodded.

She moved forward, drawing the Chimera's attention with a series of precise attacks. The creature swung both blade-arms toward her, but she avoided them and struck its legs, keeping it from advancing.

Doran waited.

The tail rose.

Brian moved in, forcing the Chimera to turn toward him. He narrowly avoided a blade strike before landing an attack against its exposed side.

Loop activated.

The opening was enough.

"Doran!"

Doran charged forward.

"Hellish Descend"

Doran leaped towards the Chimera as he slammed Moltenheart into the Chimera's side, sending a powerful shock through its body. Its legs buckled, and its upper body dipped toward the ground.

Brian activated Loop again, giving Doran the opportunity to continue his assault.

Another strike landed.

The Chimera roared and tried to retaliate, but Junith was already moving. She struck its front leg, disrupting its balance and preventing it from turning properly.

Doran pulled Moltenheart back.

"One more!"

The Chimera's tail shot toward him.

Junith intercepted its movement, forcing the stinger away from Doran. Brian moved in from the other side, keeping the creature's attention divided.

Loop activated once more.

Doran brought his hammer down with everything he had.

The impact shook the battlefield.

The Chimera's body slammed against the ground. Its blade-arms scraped across the surface as it struggled to rise.

But it couldn't.

Its movements slowed, then gradually stopped.

For a few moments, nobody moved.

Doran stood with Moltenheart resting against his shoulder, breathing heavily. Junith lowered her weapon, while Brian watched the creature to make sure it wasn't about to get back up.

Sylra remained a little behind them, visibly exhausted.

They had won.

Doran turned around.

His expression was difficult to read. He looked at Sylra for a moment before suddenly rushing toward her.

"Sylra!"

She barely had time to react before he stopped in front of her.

"Thank you!"

His voice was loud and genuine.

"Seriously! If you hadn't been there, I don't know what would've happened. You saved us!"

Sylra looked slightly surprised.

"Well... that's what I'm here for."

"Still! You did so much!"

Junith approached them, smiling faintly.

"He's right. We wouldn't have made it through that last attack without you."

Brian nodded.

"Your timing was what kept the situation from getting worse. We owe you one."

Sylra looked between them, unsure how to respond.

Doran then turned toward Junith.

"And you too! Thanks for covering me all those times."

Junith raised an eyebrow.

"Maybe next time, you could try not giving me so much to cover."

Doran laughed.

"Can't promise that!"

"Of course you can't."

Brian let out a quiet sigh.

"Some things never change."

For once, Doran didn't have an immediate comeback. He simply looked back at Sylra and gave her another grateful smile.

The battle had been far more dangerous than they had anticipated. The Chimera's venom and corrupted aura had nearly overwhelmed all four of them, and without Sylra's intervention, the outcome could have been very different.

But they had made it through.

And despite the exhaustion, they were all still standing.

The Venomous Chimera had fallen.
