When she spoke of her own sister, Rainny White's face was full of sorrow. She put down her chopsticks, and her eyelashes trembled slightly.
She looked down and stirred the cordyceps flower chicken soup in her bowl. A few bright red goji berries floated on the golden surface, swaying gently with her movements.
"My family was too poor, and my dad wanted a son. So, my eldest sister was sold right after she was born."
Rainny White raised her head, her eyes under the light looked like obsidian soaked in water, "For so many years, there's been no news at all."
The chatter in the private room abruptly stopped.
Sophie Parker paused her wine glass at her lips. Through the crystal-clear wall of the glass, she saw the tiny tears clinging to Rainny White's lowered eyelashes.
Sophie Parker's fingers unconsciously rubbed the wine glass, the cold sensation pulling her slightly back to her senses.
