A distant explosion thundered beyond the walls.

Silence returned.
A young officer hurried over to Lan Qishing, snapped a crisp military salute, and reported,
"The entire horde has been eliminated, sir."
Lan Qishing gave a slight nod.
"Our casualties?"
"Two Awakened suffered minor injuries, sir. Fortunately, there were no fatalities. However..."
The young officer hesitated. Sweat covered his face as he continued,
"We've consumed a tremendous amount of ammunition, and we've also suffered significant losses in weapons and military equipment."
