Victor stood in the middle of the cracked courtyard, breathing heavily as dust danced in the fading sunlight. Around him lay the defeated figures of the students who had come to confront him. Each of them had groaned or remained unconscious, scattered like discarded practice dummies. His fists throbbed. His ribs ached. But none of that compared to the lingering sting of humiliation he'd carried for the past week.

He bent slightly, catching his breath, and muttered, "Damn idiots. Why can't people just let things go?"

Just as he was starting to relax his guard, a shadow shifted to his left. A flicker of movement. Danger. His instincts flared too late.
