Chapter 299 - The Price of Betrayal

Léana returned to the castle with a heavy heart, her steps hurried. She went straight up to her room without running into anyone. As she pushed the door open, she stopped short.

Vareck was there, a bottle of champagne in hand, two glasses already set on the table. A satisfied smile stretched his lips.

"Finally! I was starting to think you wouldn't come. We should toast… to the disappearance of your rival."

He poured the champagne casually, approached, and held out a glass to her. Léana looked at him blankly, her eyes empty. Vareck grew impatient, forced the glass between her fingers, and clinked his against hers in a toast.

Léana didn't move. Then, suddenly, she dropped the glass. It shattered on the floor with a crystalline crash.

"Explain yourself," she shouted, turning toward him. "Explain the attack the other day! The one that killed Katrina!"

Vareck, who had been sipping calmly, turned to her with an annoyed look.

"Isn't that what you wanted?"

Léana remained silent, fists clenched.

"Instead of thanking me for removing the obstacle standing between you and your beloved, you're yelling at me," Vareck continued in a mocking tone.

Léana let out a bitter laugh.

"Thank you? Because of you, Katrina is dead… and Klaus thinks I'm guilty. Because I'm your accomplice."

Vareck feigned surprise.

"Oh… they discovered your treachery? Well, it was bound to happen eventually. After all, I discovered your treachery too, so…"

Léana violently struck the bedside table. The piece of furniture cracked under the force of the impact.

"ME, A TRAITOR?! I made the man I love hate me because I'm your accomplice! During the battle, I did my best not to hurt your men… but they, they only attacked me, even knowing I was one of yours! One of them even nearly killed me! And you keep doing everything behind my back… and when your plans fail, I'm the one at fault?! Are you serious, Vareck? Really?!"

Vareck looked at her coldly.

"And what about you? The secrets you've been keeping from me… shall we talk about those? Why didn't you tell me you knew where Asher lived? Or that Miria was now hiding at his place? If I hadn't had you followed, I'd still be in the dark. All because madam wanted to keep a good image with her friends…"

"Yes! Unlike you… I have a conscience. And feelings."

Vareck straightened up, furious.

"Because I don't, is that it?"

Léana felt tears falling. Heartbroken, she shook her head.

"No. You don't. All that interests you is yourself… and yourself alone. Nico always told me that living under your dominance wasn't a life. But I never wanted to admit it. Even when the proof was right there, under my eyes… that you had killed him. I didn't want to believe it. Now that I think about it… at some point, without realizing it, I was starting to become like you. But I'm glad that Klaus… and all the others… opened my eyes to the monster you are."

With those words, she stormed out, slamming the door behind her.

Vareck remained alone for a moment, his face twisted with rage. Then he roared and began smashing everything around him: furniture, glasses, mirrors… nothing was spared.
