Chapter 31 - IT WAS WORTH IT

Carlos sat at the dining table, observing the girl who had been on the verge of tears just moments ago, her fiery spirit threatening to take drastic measures. Now, she was radiant, beaming as she helped him serve the dishes.

"Dive in!" she chirped, her smile brighter than the morning sun, as if she'd just won the lottery.

With a mix of curiosity and apprehension, Carlos took a spoonful of food and started to eat. To his surprise, it wasn't bad at all. He continued, savoring each bite, his initial doubts melting away as he finished the entire plate.

"Can I get—" he began, only to be interrupted.

"Another plate? Of course you can!" Evelyn chimed in, her excitement palpable. She rushed off to fetch him another serving, her joy radiating like stars in the night sky.

The maids and butler stood in awe; mouths agape at the sight. This was unprecedented—Carlos, the notoriously picky eater, consuming this much food? Was their boss unwell, or perhaps under a spell?

Gavin, the secretary, couldn't help but stand up and approach Carlos as he watched him dig into his fourth plate. "Ca... Carlos, are you sick?" he inquired, placing a hand on his forehead out of concern, but felt nothing unusual. This was a man he had known to be discerning about his meals, but now he seemed like a completely different person.

Tentatively, Gavin took a spoonful for himself. "Not bad. It's actually good," he remarked, glancing at his friend. After all, Carlos had experienced far more exquisite meals than this. What had come over him?

As the meal concluded, Evelyn walked him to the car, a bounce in her step, her fingers playfully twirling in the air with enthusiasm.

"I'm going to prepare your dinner! Don't be late!" she called, her smile a beacon of delight.

"Bye," she added, taking a lighthearted leap back toward the entrance, her joy infectious.

Carlos watched her until she was out of sight, a sense of warmth spreading through his chest. Once he settled into the car, he touched his stomach, still feeling the satisfaction from the meal.

"Gav, I want you to look into her more," he said, his tone a mix of intrigue and determination.

"Okay, boss," Gavin replied, glancing at the rearview mirror and noticing his friend's thoughtful demeanor as he continued to touch his stomach in disbelief.

"Well, I guess that threat was worth it," Gavin said with a smile
