Chapter 4 - The System

Kyle opened his eyes and saw an unfamiliar scene before him—a field of green grass beneath a clear, beautiful blue sky. He lay on the ground, trying to make sense of the scene unfolding in front of him.

Where was he?

Wasn't he just in the library?

As he looked up, he saw the figure of a man, though the stranger's face remained hidden. Then, a loud voice echoed through the space:

"To be one with mana is to be one with the world."

"To cut with the sword is to command one's will. To command one's will is to shape mana…"

A blinding light surged around him engulfing the space in a smooth golden glow, giving kyle a warm feeling, the warmth soon disappeared and the light began to dim. Kyle found him self still laying down on the floor pof thge klibrary. He stood up still perplexed abou wwhat had happened, the confusion evident on his face he looked around for the book but he couldnt see it and what was the voice he heard before he passed out something about a mana sysstem. As soon as he said that he heard a voice in his head [Congratulations to the host for awakening the mana system], a blue interface displayed that in front of him Kyle perplexed, looked around him but couldnt see anyone

What the hell is going on, what do you mean system, a blue interface displayed infront of him.

Kyle blinked, looking at the blue screen in front of him. What the hell is a system? His eyes traced down to his character profile. He wasn't really surprised that his physical stats were so low—he'd always been smaller than most kids his age. But he was highly impressed when he saw his intelligence stat, although it was to be expected since he had surrounded himself with books ever since he was young. He had begun to get the general view of the system. He looked down at the skill "One with Mana." His eyes widened at the description of the skill. Didn't that make him overpowered? Although he had yet to understand the principles of mana, he knew that once he did, he had the ability to become extremely strong.

He looked down at the tab labelled affinities, and if anyone could see him now they would be freaked out by the huge smirk on his face.

Four? How do I have all four of the basic affinities?

Hey, system, what the hell is going on?

The user has access to all of the basic mana affinities due to the innate skill "One with Mana."

Kyle nodded his head, observing the screen in front of him.

Ahh, I assume that they are all at zero percent because I've never used any spells?

Yes. Once the host begins to get better attuned to the affinities, the level of skill will gradually increase, giving the host access to more features of the bloodline system.

Yes. The host currently has 10 free attribute points. Would you like to use them now? The attribute points can be used to increase the attributes like Strength and Agility?

Yes.

Ok, before I use them, is there a way for me to gain more?

Yes. The host can gain more attribute points by completing various quests assigned by the system.

Huh? What quests?

As he said that, the blue interface popped up before him again, this time displaying something else.

Quests

Shop (Locked)

Kyle clicked on the tab labelled "Quests."

(Daily Quest)

*0/10 km Run

*0/100 Sit-ups

*0/100 Push-ups

*0/100 Squats

*0/1 hour meditated

Rewards: 3 stat points

As he saw the quests displayed to him, he couldn't help but smile. What went through his head was: just a small price to pay for strength. If that was all he had to do to gain strength to make the Vermont family pay for what they did to Mom...

His eyes still focused on the screen before him, he asked: Why is the shop locked?

It is because the host has not attained the required level to be able to access the shop.

He decided not to dwell on it anymore.

Hmmm... alright. What was available to him was enough already. He decided to head back to his room to get some rest. He ended up taking a single book from the library: Introduction to the Principles of Mana.

As soon as he got back to his room, he jumped onto the bed, because he knew that tomorrow he had a lot to do.

It was early in the morning, and Kyle was still in bed. Of course he was—after everything he had gone through the previous night, he was extremely tired. But he had slept for much longer than he should have.

The doors to Kyle's room flew open with a loud bang.

BANNNNNG!!!

Kyle jumped up from his bed with a bewildered look on his face.

"What's happening?!"

He looked up to find that the door to his room had been broken—broken by none other than Alaric Vermont.

"Hey kid, who the hell do you think you are, huh? I thought I told you to meet me at the training ground first thing in the morning!" Alaric yelled, with an angry look on his face.

Kyle looked up at him, and only one thought ran through his mind:

I'm so fucked.

Kyle stood up from his bed in a hurried motion.

"I'm so sorry. I was really tired from last night—"

"What?" Alaric said, with a confused look on his face. "You've got 15 minutes. Do whatever you need to do and meet me in the training grounds. You don't want to be late again—trust me."

Alaric turned around and left. Kyle sighed, relieved that nothing else happened.

Did he have to break the door, though?

He looked at the broken pieces of the door to see Charlotte standing there with a scared look on her face. Kyle laughed out heartily. She must have come to wake him up and saw Alaric break down the door.

"Sir Alaric can be really scary at times," she said with a pout.

"Can you make me breakfast and bring it here, Charlotte? I need to take a bath quickly."

"Alright, young master. I'll be here in no time."

After quickly showering and having his breakfast, Kyle changed into the clothes that Charlotte had prepared for him and headed down to the knight training grounds.

This was where the knights who were under Alaric and the Vermont family trained daily. It was surrounded by men and women of different shapes, all training either against themselves or against dummies.

He looked so small and frail compared to these people. He spotted Alaric standing along with some other knights.

Alaric spotted him from afar and screamed:

"Look who finally decided to show up for training!"

Everyone turned toward Alaric as he screamed again:

"All trainees, assemble here!"

Everyone stopped what they were doing and formed lines in an organized fashion.

He brought Kyle towards him and said:

"Everyone, this is my nephew, Kyle Vermont. Starting today, he will be training with us all. I want you all to treat him like a brother. But regardless of his status, he will not be receiving any form of special treatment. And since he was late on his first day, he will need to be punished—10 laps around the training ground," Alaric said, with a huge smile on his face.
