A loud knock on the door startled Selene from her sleep. She sat up, her mind scrambling to remember the events of the previous night. The sudden memory of Zephyr filled her thoughts. Was that him at the door again? He was never patient. Or had he died? Was the new Alpha already here to take his place?
The door opened after another knock, and Isolde walked in. A wave of disappointment washed over Selene. She had secretly hoped it was Zephyr and now braced herself for bad news.
"Good morning," Isolde greeted, her voice gentle as she placed a tray on a nearby table.
"Good morning," Selene replied, clearing her throat and adjusting her veil. She excused herself to wash up, returning to the room feeling refreshed.
"How was your night?" Selene asked moving back to sit on the bed.
She wished she could read Isolde's mind to know how the challenge went, but even Isolde's body language was unreadable. She seemed normal, but Selene sensed a certain stiffness.
