"There has to be something." Zeeb's voice was a low, insistent growl, cutting through the rhythmic sounds of clashing steel, and grunting of soldiers training on the grounds below. "Otsanna must be able to do something."
Zephyr turned to look at his Gamma, a clear flash of surprise in his dark eyes. The Alpha, Beta, and Gamma stood together on the raised command platform.
"I just told you," Zephyr repeated, his voice dangerously calm, "Otsanna has made it perfectly clear that we cannot save her." He saw the protest forming on Zeeb's lips and his gaze hardened, a silent command to stand down. "You can ask her yourself if you doubt my word. Then she can tell you, in detail, how much we deserve this… because we do not deserve to have her."
The coded meaning of "her" landed heavily between them. It was Selene. It was becoming increasingly difficult for Zephyr to speak her name aloud and now that his Wolf was locked in a constant battle of grief and fury, it was nearly impossible.
