He could forgive himself for making mistakes due to a lack of information. BUt what he couldn't forgive was his own carelessness.
Ultimately, it was arrogance that got the best of him, complacency. He didn't think much of large organizations because he had defeated so many of them from a far weaker position before.
But he should have known that the Mercenary Guild wasn't nearly so simple a figure. They were an existence that stretched across the entire universe and they probably had figures that had already reached the pinnacle of the cultivation world.
Of course they would have contingencies and failsafes that others didn't have.
