Henry couldn't understand it. No matter how many times he turned it over in his head, it refused to make any sense. 'Why would she abandon the life she had with us only to end up living an unhappy one?' He wondered, 'There has to be something,' he thought. 'Something more,' he glanced at Alexander, 'And he knows what it is.' 

Still, he stopped pacing and dropped back into his seat with a sigh. "At the end of the day, she's an adult. She made her choice. It's been twenty years, if she regretted it, she would've walked away by now."

"I know," Alexander sighed quietly.

Ella watched them in silence. From everything she'd heard, it was clear Alexander's relationship with his grandparents was strained, and Henry had been abandoned by his mother. Yet somehow, Henry had grown into someone warm, expressive, even playful. She wondered how much pain he had buried to become that person.
