Chapter 18 - The Voice

Nexar kept walking.

The trees became thinner as he moved deeper into the forest.

The mist followed him.

It stayed close to the ground, curling around his boots before disappearing between the roots.

Nexar didn't know why he was following the voice.

Maybe it was curiosity.

Maybe it was something deeper.

The voice had called his name.

That alone was enough.

He had spent fifteen years on an island where almost everything that moved wanted to kill him.

He had learned not to ignore strange things.

But this was different.

The voice didn't feel hostile.

That was what bothered him.

Nexar stopped beside an old tree.

Frost covered one side of its bark.

He placed his hand against it.

Cold.

But underneath the cold, he felt something else.

A faint vibration.

Slow.

Steady.

Almost like a heartbeat.

Nexar pulled his hand away.

The vibration stopped.

He looked at the tree again.

Nothing.

Just bark.

Just frost.

He continued.

The farther he went, the quieter the forest became.

Eventually, even his own footsteps seemed distant.

Then he saw it.

A stone.

Half buried in the ground.

It wasn't large.

There were no glowing symbols.

No strange energy.

Nothing that should have made him stop.

But the moment Nexar saw it, something inside his chest reacted.

The void moved.

His breathing slowed.

Nexar stood in front of the stone.

"Why do I recognize this?"

He had never seen it before.

At least, he was certain he hadn't.

He crouched and brushed away the frost.

There was a mark underneath.

A circle.

Inside it was a single line.

Simple.

Almost meaningless.

Nexar touched it.

The world disappeared.

There was no transition.

One moment he was in the forest.

The next, there was nothing.

No trees.

No mist.

No cold.

Only darkness.

Nexar looked around.

"Where am I?"

His voice didn't echo.

Then he heard footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Someone was walking through the darkness.

Nexar turned.

A man appeared in the distance.

He wore old armor.

Not modern alloy.

Not gene-enhanced combat gear.

Real armor.

Dark metal covered his body, scratched and worn as if it had survived a hundred battles.

His face remained hidden.

The man stopped.

He looked directly at Nexar.

"You're late."

Nexar frowned.

"Who are you?"

The man didn't answer.

His attention moved toward Nexar's chest.

"The seal is weakening."

Nexar instinctively touched his chest.

"What seal?"

The man stepped closer.

"You don't remember."

It wasn't a question.

Nexar's expression hardened.

"Remember what?"

The man raised one hand.

The darkness around them began to shake.

Something enormous moved somewhere beyond the darkness.

Nexar couldn't see it.

But he felt it.

For the first time, the void inside his chest reacted violently.

His Third Eye opened.

For a fraction of a second, Nexar saw something behind the armored man.

A massive shape.

Bound.

Chains wrapped around something he couldn't understand.

And behind those chains...

A pale blue light.

Like an eye.

Nexar took a step backward.

"What is that?"

The armored man finally looked behind himself.

His voice became quieter.

"Not yet."

The darkness cracked.

Nexar felt something grab the inside of his chest.

Then—

Everything disappeared.

Nexar dropped to one knee in the forest.

He gasped for air.

The stone was still beneath his hand.

But the mark was gone.

Nexar stared at his palm.

Nothing.

He slowly stood.

"What was that?"

A branch moved behind him.

Nexar turned.

This time, someone was actually standing there.

A girl.

She looked around his age.

Her clothes were torn from moving through the forest, and frost covered one side of her sleeve.

She stared at Nexar.

Then at the stone.

Her expression changed.

"You touched it."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I wanted to know what it was."

She shook her head.

"That's not why."

Nexar frowned.

"What do you mean?"

The girl took a small step backward.

"You heard the voice."

Nexar didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

The girl's face became pale.

"Then it's already too late."

"For what?"

She looked past him.

Her eyes widened.

"Nexar..."

He turned.

The forest was empty.

"What?"

She pointed toward the trees.

"Look."

Nexar narrowed his eyes.

At first, he saw nothing.

Then he noticed the frost.

It was spreading.

Not randomly.

It was forming a path.

A thin white trail moving between the roots.

Leading deeper into the forbidden area.

The girl whispered,

"It's awake."

Nexar looked at her.

"What is?"

She didn't answer.

A deep sound rolled through the forest.

Not a roar.

Not an animal.

A voice.

Ancient.

Low enough that Nexar felt it more than heard it.

Then one word became clear.

"Nexar."

The girl stepped backward.

"We need to leave."

Nexar didn't move.

For some reason, the voice didn't frighten him.

It felt familiar.

Too familiar.

He looked toward the darkness between the trees.

Then he remembered the words from the vision.

The seal is weakening.

Nexar slowly clenched his fist.

"Who sealed it?"

The girl looked at him.

"I don't know."

"Then who am I?"

She stared at him for a long moment.

"I don't know that either."

Nexar almost laughed.

"You came all the way here just to tell me you don't know anything?"

The girl looked genuinely confused.

"I didn't come here for you."

Nexar's expression changed.

"Then why are you here?"

She looked toward the spreading frost.

"I was running."

"From what?"

Her answer came quietly.

"The same thing that's calling you."

Nexar stopped smiling.

Before he could ask another question, the forest shook.

Birds exploded from the trees.

The mist rose from the ground.

Branches rattled.

The girl grabbed Nexar's arm.

"Run."

Nexar looked at her hand.

Then toward the forest.

Something was moving beneath the ground.

Not toward them.

Around them.

The frost spread in a wide circle.

Nexar's Third Eye opened.

He suddenly saw dozens of thin energy lines beneath the soil.

They formed a massive pattern.

The entire forbidden zone was part of it.

The training ground wasn't simply a forest.

It was built over something.

Something enormous.

Nexar looked toward the extraction point.

It was still visible on the distant map in his mind.

He could reach it.

He could finish the test.

But the girl was already pulling him in the opposite direction.

"Come on!"

Nexar hesitated.

Then the voice came again.

This time, there was no distance between them.

"Nexar."

He turned.

Nothing stood behind him.

But the frost beneath his feet formed a single word.

Not in the language of Earth.

Not in any language he knew.

Yet somehow...

He understood it.

RETURN.

Nexar stared at it.

His chest tightened.

The void moved.

The golden warmth of Manipura answered.

For one strange moment, the two energies didn't fight.

They reacted together.

The frost cracked.

Nexar looked down.

Something beneath the soil had noticed him.

Not the other way around.

He finally understood.

The forbidden zone wasn't calling him because something had discovered him.

It had been waiting for him.

Nexar looked at the girl.

"Run."

She stared at him.

"What?"

"Run."

This time, Nexar grabbed her arm.

They ran.

Not toward the voice.

Not toward the stone.

Toward the extraction point.

Behind them, the frost continued spreading.

The trees began to shake one after another.

Deep beneath the forbidden area, something ancient shifted.

Stone scraped against stone.

A massive underground chamber slowly opened.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

At its center stood a single stone seat.

Empty.

Covered in centuries of dust.

In front of it lay a sword.

Old.

Broken.

Its blade was cracked almost through the middle.

Nothing about it looked powerful.

It looked forgotten.

Then the chamber trembled.

The sword moved.

Just once.

Its broken blade dragged slightly across the stone floor.

A tiny sound echoed through the chamber.

Clink.

Far above, Nexar stopped running.

The girl nearly crashed into him.

"What happened?"

Nexar looked back.

He didn't know why.

He simply knew.

Something had moved.

Something that had been still for a very long time.

His Third Eye Manual opened without being called.

A single message appeared.

[Ancient object detected.]

A second line appeared.

[Connection: Unknown.]

Then a third.

For the first time, the Manual didn't give him advice.

It gave him a question.

[Why does it recognize you?]

Nexar stared at the words.

The page disappeared.

He looked toward the extraction point.

Then toward the forest behind him.

For fifteen years, he had believed he was the one searching for a way home.

Now, for the first time, he wondered if something had been waiting for him to come back.

And somewhere beneath the forest...

the broken sword moved again.
