Chapter 35 - Descent into the Core

The deeper they went, the heavier the air felt. Every step Kael took reverberated faintly, as though the academy itself warned them to turn back. The walls, etched with ancient sigils, pulsed with dark energy, and the faint hum of Nox's bindings reverberated through the stone floor.

Kael glanced at his friends. Each one carried their own burden, yet their determination was unwavering. This was no longer just a mission—it was a test of their unity, their trust, and their resolve.

"Keep your focus," Luminor said, his glowing eyes scanning the intricate magical currents weaving through the corridors. "The bindings are denser here. One misstep, and we could be trapped in Nox's control indefinitely."

Pallas hovered ahead, wings folded, her golden eyes sharp. "I've scouted three possible routes. One has less magical interference, but it's heavily guarded. Another is a maze of corridors with minimal patrols, though traps are likely. The third… risky, but it leads directly to the core."

Kael's gaze fell on each of his ten friends. "We go through the third. Risky or not, we need to strike at the heart, not the outskirts. Everyone ready?"

A chorus of affirmatives answered, though subtle tension threaded through the group.

---

They moved as a coordinated unit. Zephyr melted into shadows, clearing the path ahead, while Vex's illusions concealed their advance from Nox's distant detection. Malian's spells countered the faint threads of binding energy that crawled along the walls.

Thorne and Arden moved silently, scouting for traps and diversions, while Lyra and Amara reinforced wards and protected against any influence that tried to sneak into their minds.

Kael felt Lyra's presence beside him, steady and warm. Their hands brushed briefly as they navigated a narrow corridor, a silent reassurance amidst the creeping tension. Kael's chest tightened—not just from the effort, but from the connection he felt with her.

---

The first major defense of the core revealed itself: a massive chamber, its floor etched with concentric circles of glowing runes. Dark energy twisted upward, forming shapes of twisted creatures writhing in eternal torment. The moment they stepped inside, the runes flared.

"Traps," Malian muttered, eyes flicking over the intricate symbols. "These aren't just physical—he's binding energy to the floor itself. Step incorrectly, and we could be immobilized."

Kael nodded. "Zephyr, guide us. Vex, keep illusions active. Everyone else, stay alert."

The group moved carefully, one step at a time. Pallas flew briefly to scout the higher ledges, spotting faintly glowing orbs hovering above. "Those are energy nodes," she warned. "They amplify the runes' effects. We'll need to disable them."

Arden and Thorne coordinated their movements, creating small controlled explosions that drew attention to one side of the room. Malian immediately traced the energy back to the nodes, weakening their effect.

Kael's sword hummed as he cut through a binding tendril that threatened to lash at the group. Elian calculated each step, predicting the ripple effect of the runes. "Left two steps, now pivot! Good, keep moving!"

Lyra's wards flared brightly as she neutralized the first wave of energy pulses. Amara reinforced the shields, creating a corridor of safety for the team.

Even with such coordination, the pressure was immense. Every movement had to be precise, every step calculated. Nox's magic wasn't just strong—it was alive, adapting.

---

Suddenly, the shadows condensed into another lieutenant. This one was taller, armor etched with crimson sigils, eyes like molten gold.

"You dare advance?" it hissed. "Do you truly believe you can challenge Nox?"

Kael's jaw tightened. "We don't believe—we act."

The fight erupted. Thorne and Arden drew the lieutenant's attention, attacking from different angles. Zephyr struck silently from the shadows, cutting tendrils before they could lash out. Vex's illusions created openings while Malian weakened the bindings.

Pallas dove from above, striking with precise force, while Lyra and Amara concentrated their magic to protect their friends and weaken the lieutenant's control over the chamber.

Kael and Elian moved in tandem, striking at the lieutenant's core. Sword met shadow, sparks flying, and the chamber trembled with the clash.

Minutes felt like hours. Every friend contributed, perfectly synchronized. Even in exhaustion, they adapted to each unexpected move, a testament to their trust and training.

Finally, with a coordinated strike, the lieutenant fell, disintegrating into shadow mist. The room's oppressive energy lessened, though the pulsing runes continued to glow faintly.

---

Kael wiped sweat from his brow, breathing heavily. "Everyone okay?"

"Yes," came the chorus, though fatigue was evident.

Luminor's eyes narrowed. "This was a test, but the core's defenses are still active. Nox's influence is stronger there. The real challenge awaits."

Kael looked at each friend. Ten faces, determined yet tired. "Then we rest briefly. We move carefully, together. No one goes alone."

Lyra stepped close, her hand brushing his again. "Kael… I… I trust you," she whispered, voice soft but unwavering.

Kael's chest tightened. "I trust you too," he replied. The simple words carried more weight than any spell, any sword strike.

Amara smiled faintly, giving a reassuring nod to the group. "We're ready. All ten of us. We can do this."

Kael nodded, fists clenched. "Then let's go. Nox waits, but we are stronger together. Remember—every step, every spell, every strike… we protect each other first. Then we strike the heart."

As they prepared for the final descent toward the academy's core, the shadows writhed in anticipation. Nox was aware now—the intruders were close. But inside, ten friends moved as one, ready to face whatever awaited them.

And Kael realized, with unwavering certainty, that no darkness, no demon, no binding could sever the bonds they had forged. Not as long as they stood together.
