Grandma Jean offered a kind smile and gently patted Anna on her hair.
"Who is this fine man dear?" She inquired and Anna turned towards Carlos– probably thinking of what to say.
"Uh… he is… he—"
Carlos quickly stepped forward and pulled her close to his shoulder and said confidently.
"She's my fiancee."
Grandma Jean was stunned that she couldn't help but smile widely.
From the farther end of the room, Nathaniel who helped to grind the wheat was frozen in his steps, hearing what Carlos had said.
'Fiancee? But Anna did not say anything about being engaged. Or is he lying to impress grandma?'
"Come here my child." Grandma Jean said softly, and Carlos crouched down to meet her gaze. The woman stretched out her hands and touched his face gently.
Her caress was soft and almost soothing, like silk. The feeling was beautiful.
"I don't know if she must have revealed her deepest truth to you. But I hope you do not abandon her for it."
Anna quickly pulled Carlos up.
