Chapter 13 - A Short Term Quest?

'A new notification?'

Indeed, the system had sent him a new notification.

'What were the chances that It was good news? Or maybe it was bad news?'

He would have to find out. Adjusting his position on the bed, he quickly checked the notification panel. There were a couple of unread messages there, but he chose to read the latest one.

[Host, your short term quests have arrived. Complete them to gain astonishing rewards]

A short term quest? There was really another type of quest?!. He quickly grew ecstatic instantly. He navigated to the quests panel.

Haruto froze.

'Crap! Two grade 3 quests?! And what the hell is a ore vein?!'

There was no telling how much he'd gain from a grade 3 quest. With how his captain had described power systems, even the lowest was bound to hold bountiful rewards.

Somehow, he knew or rather, he guessed that the system's power grades was similar to that of the sentinels.

And so, there were two things he wasn't accounting for. One of it was that in reality, he had never truly encountered an horror!. Remembering how the Captain had painted those creatures, he shivered. As a dormant human, he didn't have a chance at challenging even the weakest of monstrosities like that. And going alone?.

'Isn't this too much?'

The first one was especially harrowing. He more or less had an idea of what undead creatures were. They were living bodies already ridded of their souls. They were dark creatures that had no goal but to devour life. They were true horrors!. They were terrifying.

'Were they called undead for naught?'

And…

Haruto squinted his eyes.

'What the hell is unknown? Was it some kind of secret? He was going to have to fight it?'

The second quest said he had to kill the unknown. If there was anything that killed a man very swiftly and efficiently, it was something he had absolutely no idea about. Grimacing, he chose not to dwell on it for now, he navigated back to his status panel.

Stat Points: 5

]

Staring at the panel again, he got tingly thinking about how powerful he would become If he upgraded his stats. According to his guess, the system gave him 5 points for his daily quests. He would have to check the notifications left unread but wasn't that stinginess! Just five points?! Really?!.

As an experiment, Haruto chose to invest 1 point into his strength stat. Ecstatic, he approached the chair near the table beside his book shelf and lifted it. He lifted it easily, with one hand. But…

He palmed his face. He would've lifted the damn thing normally after all!.

In annoyance, he invested all 4 remaining SPs into his strength attribute. Then, he tried to lift it again.

'What the hell!'

Haruto found it many times more easier to life the wooden chair. He even had no trouble lifting it with just one hand until it reached the most centimeter it could reach above his head.

'Wow!'

'I can grow stronger!'

Haruto grew even more ecstatic. He had found a unique way to grow stronger!.

'Scratch that'

The real thing was. A unique way to grow stronger had found him. Either way, there was now a clear path to get to his sister. He could now get to Lilly!.

Suppressing his excitement, Haruto looked at the barricade of different stats on the panel. He could more or less understand a few things on it, like Strength, that meant his physical sturdiness…right?, Intelligence, Agility. But what the hell was Spiritual Level?.

Sighing, and realizing he had to be done with the system as soon as possible, he got serious. There was only one thing left for him to do…

***

Back when he had fought Lord Khai, he was sure he heard the system said something related to receiving. He couldn't have been mistaken…right?. The chances he could be mistaken were close to zero. He was sure.

'Goddamnit! You better give me something worth it!'

The battle with that bloodlust bastard was one of his darkest memories. The bastard had shown no mercy and would've without a doubt killed him if he slacked even by a little. He gritted his teeth in annoyance.

Filled with emotions, he checked the group of notifications and quickly located the one from when he defeated the knight.

It read:

[You have survived a clash with a Grade 1 abomination. Your rewards have arrived, do you wish to check them?]

Haruto froze. He stared at the notification in disbelief. His eyes widened so large, he was having trouble enlarging them anymore.

'Grade 1!!! That bastard was grade one even in his weakened state!!'

Haruto broke a sweat. If it really was grade one, then, there was only one way to describe his attitude that day — NONCHALANT!!!. Yes, he was nonchalant!. He remembered all his actions, smirking, resilience?.

Damn it all!. Of course they were all useless!!. The bastard had definitely let him escape. He was definitely putting the act up just to make it look real.

How many strikes would a grade 1 Sentinel need to kill a mere dormant human even with the most mundane weapon?. With the way captain had given his explanation, None!. The oppressive aura alone was enough. Even with the quantum guard. If that thing really wanted to kill him. He was very sure he would not have escaped. His face quickly paled.

'Damn it!'

He hated being mocked at. He hated being regarded as weak even though he was. He felt resentment towards that knight. He could imagine the smirk on the knight's face — if he could — after he left. He gritted his teeth.

'Damn it! Damn it all'

Even so, it was hard to think that the system would hire someone to train up it's host. Someone has powerful as that?. Who exactly built this thing? What was his/her aim?. Was he/she the unknown in the short term quest?.

'Crap! So much questions!'

With no visible answers to his questions, Haruto chose to check his rewards from surviving a clash from the monstrosity. He wasn't shocked.

…He was left speechless.
