Chapter 9 - The Assassination Guild

Mahir and Idris, disguised as merchants, infiltrated the perilous underworld of Persia in search of Viktor a 22-year-old master observer known only by his alias, Jolix. Famous for his unmatched analytical mind and silent assassinations, Jolix had been tracking King Romanus, determined to take his life. Yet, the king's formidable security had foiled every attempt. When Mahir and Idris finally approached him, Jolix's instincts sharpened his hand automatically reached for his intricately crafted daggers.

"What do you want?" he growled, eyes narrowing.

Mahir's reply was brief. "Not here. Follow us."

Suspicion flickered in Jolix's gaze, but when Mahir mentioned the twins, everything changed. His eyes widened in disbelief. "The twins? They're alive?" he demanded. Without another word, Jolix followed them to a secluded inn, where Mahir and Idris revealed the truth about the coming war and the twins' plans.

Jolix's skepticism gave way to resolve as he absorbed the weight of their words. He agreed to rally his allies from the assassination guild and prepare for battle. But when Mahir mentioned Sesugh, Jolix's expression shifted his eyes sharpened with purpose. "I'll find him," he said, a faint smile touching his lips.

Navigating the winding alleys of Persia, Jolix kept watch for any sign of Lord Mesh a high-ranking member of both the assassination guild and the Persian council. He had already sent word requesting a meeting, and now he waited in the shadows.

The night air was heavy with tension when Lord Mesh emerged from the darkness, his eyes glinting with intelligence. "Jolix, it's been a while," he said in a low, measured tone. "What brings you to my doorstep?"

Jolix stepped forward smoothly. "The twins are alive, Lord Mesh. They're gathering allies for a war against King Romanus."

Though Lord Mesh's face remained composed, Jolix caught a flicker of intrigue in his eyes. "Go on."

"The twins want our help," Jolix continued. "They're asking us to gather as many men as we can and join them against the king."

Lord Mesh nodded slowly. "I see. And what makes them think we can trust them?"

Jolix gave a dry smile. "They're counting on our dissatisfaction with the current regime. Word is, you're not exactly pleased with King Romanus's leadership."

Lord Mesh's eyes narrowed slightly. "Who's been talking?"

Jolix chuckled softly. "Let's just say I have my sources. But we both know Romanus isn't the most capable ruler. And with Shedrach by his side…"

Lord Mesh leaned closer, his tone turning conspiratorial. "Shedrach feels the same. We're both tired of the king's incompetence and self-interest. He's more concerned with power than Persia's welfare."

Jolix's gaze locked on him. "Then would Shedrach be willing to join us?"

Lord Mesh gave a firm nod. "I'm certain of it. We've spoken of the king's failures. We're ready to do what's necessary to bring change."

Jolix's eyes brightened with interest. "That's valuable, Lord Mesh. I'll pass it on to the twins. Perhaps we can discuss how to ensure a smooth transition of power?"

A hint of a smile touched Lord Mesh's lips. "I'm always open to discussing Persia's future, Jolix. Let's make sure it's a new era worth fighting for."

With their alliance secured, the two men parted ways each knowing their cooperation could shape the outcome of the coming war.

Within hours, Jolix reached a dimly lit tavern, where the haunting melody of a sesugh filled the air. Behind the bar, a 19-year-old prodigy played masterfully, his father watching proudly. Jolix spotted him instantly Sesugh, the one Mahir had spoken of. Their eyes met, and an unspoken understanding passed between them.

As Sesugh finished his piece, Jolix approached quietly. "Sesugh, we need to talk," he said in a low tone.

The young man's father eyed Jolix warily. "What's this about, Jolix? You're not here for a drink, are you?"

Sesugh, however, seemed to understand. "It's okay, Father. I think I know what this is about."

Outside, under the cool night sky, Jolix spoke plainly. "The twins are alive. They're gathering allies for war against King Romanus. We need your skills."

Sesugh's eyes gleamed with resolve. "I'm in. When do we leave?"

Jolix allowed himself a small smile. "Meet us at Thork Peak in seven days. We'll gather the others and move out to join the twins."

With that, they parted ways both aware that the stakes had never been higher. The war was coming, and they would be ready.
