Chapter 205: Too Suspicious
Chang Wei opened his eyes and realized there were a lot of people around him.
"Hm? Where am I?"
He noticed that these people were all in rags, some barely clothed. Yet one thing was the same across the board—they all looked utterly terrified, both on their faces and deep in their hearts.
"What's going on? Why are they suddenly gathering us like this?"
"What are these Puritans trying to do?"
"They said they want us to live together…"
"You can't trust anything the Deguo guys say. I have to find a way to escape from here!"
"My child… Why did they take my child? There's not a single child here. Where did all the children go?"
"I'm starving… No matter what the Deguo people want to do, surely they'll give us something to eat, right? As long as I get food, I'll do anything."
Chang Wei thought it over. He could see their thoughts and hear their discussions.
He also figured out that this place was called Aoxinweisi.
Had he time-traveled into the past?
Or was this just one of those black-and-white propaganda flicks where the Puritans are portrayed as brainless and evil?
Honestly, portraying your enemies as idiots just makes you look bad. That's the real issue with America—making its opponents look dumb only ends up degrading itself.
"Most likely… Hellboy, then?"
Chang Wei thought for a bit. There weren't many films with a Deguo setting that he'd seen. He hadn't watched much like Jin-Roh, and that one's setting was futuristic, so it was unlikely.
As for Hellsing, he'd just gone through that. It couldn't be the past version of that world, right?
But when you talk about Puritans and concentration camps, then yeah… It points straight to a WWII backdrop.
So it was totally reasonable for him to guess Hellboy.
Was he about to get sacrificed to open the gates of hell?
"Now that's actually a little scary…"
Chang Wei started laughing—a chilling, cackling laugh. Don't get the wrong idea. He was laughing to cover up his fear.
"Well then, let's just blow this place up. In a world where gods and demons exist, making an appearance like some righteous savior isn't realistic. Better to go full utilitarian."
He released the Divine Light Virus, and immediately the surrounding Jews felt uncomfortable. Something was clearly changing in their bodies.
The virus had already evolved multiple times. At this point, it was terrifying—infecting and transforming them instantly into viral organisms. All the strengths it had absorbed until now were now infused into the bodies of these Jews.
And then—they broke through the walls and began killing indiscriminately.
The Puritans had no idea what was happening. Why had monsters suddenly appeared? They panicked and opened fire.
But bullets were useless. They couldn't even slow them down. The monsters ignored the gunfire entirely and quickly slaughtered every Puritan in the entire camp.
Chang Wei did not show himself. He was waiting to see if any mysterious forces would appear.
Even if this wasn't the Hellboy universe, in any world built on the Puritan mythos, thanks to that little mustached man's obsession with the occult, there were bound to be all kinds of strange supernatural elements. Right now, Chang Wei was using his soldiers to scout the way.
"Could it be Malèna?"
He considered that possibility. But he had no intention of becoming a lecher like Cao Cao. He wasn't into married women. His preferences were narrow—just big sisters with elegance and substance. Everything else didn't interest him.
If it really was Malèna, he'd be disappointed. And then, in the name of fairness, he'd deliver equal destruction to everyone. He couldn't care less about the female lead's story. Besides, there was still a mountain of darkness in his mind waiting to be unleashed.
If he really had to concern himself with those things, he'd probably go full villain mode himself.
[Example: Humanity's depravity is beyond saving. Human darkness is irreversible. So why not just destroy them all?]
Suddenly, within Chang Wei's awareness, one of his super soldiers had been intercepted.
"A blond, blue-eyed Puritan… Don't tell me I've ended up in that Puritan Superman comic universe?"
Chang Wei was surprised. The Puritan Superman world was basically a relic civilization no one could quite figure out, where blood crystals had created all sorts of superhumans. In terms of power, even the strongest battleship-level superhuman was no threat to Chang Wei.
He could tell—this blond, blue-eyed Puritan wasn't a match for his super soldier.
But!
In just a few moves, the opponent had ripped his super soldier apart with bare hands.
"What the hell? How can a Puritan Superman be strong enough to take down my super soldier?"
Now he was interested. Keep in mind, his super soldiers were Dragon-level. If he wanted to conserve effort, he could've just used his Invisible Assassins instead.
The only reason he'd sent in these soldiers was to explore this world while avoiding detection via psychic tracking.
So this guy who was, at most, Tiger-level before—he took a few hits without dying, then suddenly one-shotted a Dragon-level?
"That's strange. He doesn't seem to be affected by any recoil?"
From the molecular data, Chang Wei picked up on that detail.
Despite several attacks, the guy hadn't even budged. But it wasn't just about strength—Chang Wei could stay motionless too, but that was because he cleverly transferred the reactive force into the air or the ground. It didn't mean he was immune to physics.
"Recoil… or wait, did the kinetic energy just vanish?"
That realization caught him off guard.
He watched as the blond Puritan tore through his super soldiers, smashing them apart with punches and kicks. Yet oddly, even though he was faster than them, he was deliberately letting himself get hit.
If it were Chang Wei, and he had that kind of strength, he'd never waste time taking hits without an audience to impress. What's the point of acting cool when no one's watching? Might as well just wipe everyone out instantly. Unless someone is watching, then yeah, he'd show off some invincibility tricks.
Of course, if the enemy had intelligence, that'd work too. That way he could get that psychological impact.
Basically, he was emulating DOOM.
Only problem—Chang Wei didn't have DOOM's tech for boosting weapon damage. Otherwise, he'd also be doing stylish mass kills with firearms.
And then, finally, Chang Wei figured out who this blond, blue-eyed Puritan was.
A mutant!
"Sebastian Shaw!"
At first, Chang Wei hadn't taken a good look. It was only after a strong sense of familiarity struck him that he did a quick mental search and matched the profile.
Black King of the Hellfire Club—Sebastian Shaw.
His powers: absorb energy, transform it into other forms, release it, strengthen his own body, and maintain eternal youth. Downside? The energy is always draining, so he has to keep absorbing more.
Chang Wei stared at Sebastian Shaw like he'd just struck gold.
Are you kidding me? A mutant?!
A creation of the Celestials, the X-gene that could defy all logic—this was a treasure trove for the Divine Light Virus!
"…Too bad it's the movie version."
Chang Wei thought with a greedy glint in his eye—never satisfied, always wanting more.
