Two days after the conclusion of the Azeran Circuit, the tournament's central complex was once again filled with life.
The complex, constructed and maintained by the Knight Association, occupied an expansive section of the imperial grounds. Its architecture combined monumental stonework with advanced structural engineering and various technologies, the broad ceremonial plaza opening toward a raised platform where the Circuit's most distinguished guests would preside over the proceedings.
Banners bearing the insignias of the participating squads hung from the surrounding towers. Representatives of the Knight Association, imperial officials, sponsors, and invited guests filled the designated seating areas, while enormous displays relayed the ceremony to audiences across the empire.
The Azeran Circuit was over, but its conclusion deserved a proper celebration.
And unlike the previous two weeks, nobody on the main platform was in immediate danger of being punched through a mountain.
The advanced healers had done their work.
Both Nathaniel and Ethan had been restored to full health, their injuries practically erased through the combined efforts of the empire's finest healing augments. There were no broken bones, no lingering burns, and no visible signs of the punishment they had endured during their final bout.
One would have needed the tournament footage to appreciate just how thoroughly they had nearly destroyed each other.
Nathaniel stood among the representatives of Squad Four, dressed in a commissioned, specialised variant of his usual armour and combat gear. The design retained the practical silhouette of his regular equipment, but the additional gold accents gave it a more formal appearance without compromising its functionality.
He looked considerably more composed than he had at the end of the fight.
Whether that was because he had recovered or simply because he had learned to tolerate standing in front of large crowds remained debatable.
A short distance away stood Ethan, equally restored and dressed in formal royal-blue attire. His white hair had been neatly arranged, his posture impeccable, and his expression composed.
If the two days of recovery had given him anything, it was enough time to come to terms with the fact that his loss had become one of the most replayed moments in the Circuit's history.
He did not appear particularly pleased about that.
At the centre of the platform, Ryker Waithiera stood before the assembled audience, all six of his eyes scanning different sections of the crowd. His usual enthusiasm had survived the tournament entirely intact.
"Distinguished guests, representatives of the Knight Association, honoured members of the imperial family, and of course, our extraordinary competitors!"
His voice carried across the complex.
"Welcome to the official award ceremony of the Aderan Circuit!"
The crowd responded with applause.
Ryker allowed the noise to build before continuing, clearly enjoying the opportunity to address an audience that could not simply flee when he got excited.
"For the past several weeks, these young men and women have demonstrated their capabilities through assessment, strategy, cooperation, and combat. Some have exceeded expectations. Others have discovered just how much further they must go. And all of them have contributed to a Circuit that will be remembered for years to come!"
The screens behind him cycled through highlights from the competition.
The initial assessments appeared first, followed by the Grand Circuit's chaotic objective-based encounters. The displays showcased coordinated ambushes, carefully executed defensive formations, spectacular augment activations, and several particularly memorable failures that drew laughter from the audience.
Then came the duels.
The crowd's reaction rose as the footage moved through the champion bouts, eventually reaching Nathaniel's encounters with Rayln and Ethan.
Ryker, naturally, made no attempt to restrain his excitement.
"And what a conclusion we had! Our finalists pushed themselves to extraordinary lengths, reminding us all that the difference between victory and defeat can come down to a single decision, a single opening, or a single punch!"
The footage of Nathaniel striking Ethan across the face appeared on the screen.
The audience roared.
Ethan closed his eyes briefly.
Nathaniel stared straight ahead.
Somewhere behind them, George was visibly struggling to contain his laughter.
Ryker waited until the applause subsided before moving into the general awards. The participating squads were recognised for their performance throughout the Circuit, with commendations and rewards distributed according to their accomplishments.
Each squad received its share of recognition, and several competitors were singled out for exceptional performances in individual stages. The announcements were met with applause, occasional cheers, and more than a few competitive glances between teams that had spent the tournament trying to outperform one another.
When Squad Four's results were formally acknowledged, their members stepped forward together.
George accepted the squad's commendation on their behalf, while the rest of the team stood beside him. Their achievement had not rested on Nathaniel's duels alone. Their performance in the earlier stages, their coordination, and their success in the Grand Circuit had secured their place among the tournament's best.
For once, the entire squad could enjoy the recognition without someone trying to break their representative's ribs.
Once Ryker concluded the general awards, he stepped aside.
"Now, for the exceptional squads and their outstanding contributions to this year's Circuit, I would like to invite Grandmaster Zenith to present the physical trophies!"
The applause that followed was immediate.
Zenith rose from his seat and approached the centre of the platform.
Even among the imperial dignitaries, the Grandmaster was difficult to overlook. His immense frame, white hair, and dark ceremonial attire gave him an imposing presence without requiring him to announce himself. The white insignia across his chest caught the light as he approached the display of trophies.
He proceeded through the exceptional squad awards, presenting each trophy personally and offering brief words of recognition to the recipients.
When Squad Four's turn arrived, George stepped forward with his teammates.
Zenith regarded them for a moment before presenting the trophy.
"Good coordination," he remarked. "You made effective use of your individual strengths rather than relying on a single approach. Keep that habit."
George accepted the trophy with a respectful nod.
"We will, Grandmaster."
Zenith's gaze passed briefly over the others before settling on Nathaniel.
For the smallest fraction of a second, his expression changed.
There it was again.
That peculiar familiarity he had sensed during the final duel, something in the young man's stance and the way he carried himself that had stirred an old memory.
Zenith said nothing about it.
Instead, he gave Nathaniel a measured nod before continuing with the ceremony.
When the exceptional squad awards were complete, Ryker returned to the centre of the platform.
"And now," he announced, his voice taking on a more formal tone, "we come to the final presentations of this year's Azeran Circuit."
The crowd gradually quieted.
Zenith moved to one side of the platform as the Empress rose from her seat.
She approached with the composure expected of the empire's sovereign, her brilliant white eyes reflecting the light of the ceremonial hall. The murmurs among the audience faded as she came to stand beside the Grandmaster.
Even Nathaniel, who had spent the last two days being congratulated, questioned, and occasionally stared at by people who had apparently never seen a man before, straightened slightly.
The Empress surveyed the assembled competitors.
Then her gaze settled on the two young men standing at the front.
"Nathaniel Alderman. Ethan Azeroth."
Both stepped forward.
The Empress studied them in silence for a moment, her white eyes moving between the pair.
"Your final bout was not what many expected," she began. "But the purpose of the Aderan Circuit has never been to confirm what we already believe about our strongest competitors. It is to discover what they are capable of becoming."
She turned toward Ethan first.
"You entered this Circuit carrying the expectations of your position, as well as your own ambitions. You demonstrated considerable strength, sound judgement, and the ability to adapt under pressure. Those qualities remain yours, regardless of the result."
Ethan bowed his head.
"Thank you, Your Majesty."
"However, strength that is sufficient today may not be sufficient tomorrow. You know this better than most. Your defeat should not become something you carry as a wound to your pride. Make it something you learn from."
Her tone remained composed, neither indulgent nor cruel.
"Continue to develop. Observe the people around you. Learn from the winner, and grow alongside him rather than allowing the distance between you to become something you cannot cross."
Ethan's expression tightened ever so slightly at the words, but he maintained his composure.
"I understand."
The Empress regarded him for another moment before turning to Nathaniel.
"And you."
Nathaniel met her gaze.
"You have demonstrated capabilities well beyond what your previous public classification suggested. Your performance against Rayln was exceptional. Your subsequent victory against Ethan, despite the condition you were in and the demands placed upon your reserves, has made it necessary to reconsider your official standing."
She paused, allowing the audience to settle.
"Effective immediately, Nathaniel Alderman, your baseline combat classification is raised from A3 to S2."
The reaction was immediate.
Whispers swept through the assembled spectators. Several contestants exchanged looks, while others leaned forward to hear the remainder of the announcement.
The Empress continued.
"Furthermore, based on the capabilities you demonstrated during the Circuit, your sustained combat performance suggests that you may operate at an S3 level over an extended engagement, provided you can maintain that standard consistently."
Nathaniel absorbed the announcement without any dramatic reaction.
An S2 baseline.
S3 under sustained conditions.
It was a considerable revision of his standing, and one that would undoubtedly attract more attention than he had any particular desire to receive.
The Empress gestured toward an attendant, who approached carrying a long, carefully folded garment.
The attendant presented it to her.
It was a coat, though the name hardly seemed sufficient to describe it.
The exterior was a brilliant, almost luminous white, its surface marked by subtle patterns that caught the light as the fabric shifted. The interior, by contrast, was dark, its lining creating a sharp contrast against the pale exterior. Its cut allowed it to be worn as a coat or draped across the shoulders like a cloak.
The garment possessed an unusual presence, distinct from the conventional ceremonial attire worn by the other competitors.
The Empress held it out toward Nathaniel.
"In recognition of your performance, you are awarded this garment, along with a grant of land and resources for your personal use. Squad Four will also receive enhanced allocations beyond its standard Circuit rewards."
Nathaniel accepted the coat with both hands.
"Your Majesty, I am honoured."
The Empress watched him carefully.
"The allocations are intended to support further development, both yours and that of your squad. Use them wisely. Your victory has earned you these privileges, but what you do with them will determine whether they prove worthwhile."
"Understood."
The attendant withdrew, leaving Nathaniel holding the folded white garment.
Behind him, George and the others exchanged glances. Their squad had already secured a strong position through the Circuit, but the additional resources represented an opportunity far beyond what they had initially expected.
The other squads had received comparable categories of rewards, yet the difference in the quality and scale of what had been granted to Squad Four was difficult to overlook.
It was a substantial distinction, one that would be discussed long after the ceremony ended.
The Empress then turned her attention back to the two young men.
"Ethan, I expect you to remember this occasion for the right reasons."
"Yes, Mother."
The answer came automatically.
For a brief moment, the Empress's expression softened.
Her gaze shifted beyond Ethan, settling on Rayln among the assembled competitors.
And something in the sight of her daughter, standing with her long white hair and familiar steel-grey eyes, drew the sovereign's thoughts elsewhere.
She remembered being young herself.
She remembered standing where these competitors now stood, carrying her own ambitions and the weight of expectations that had seemed impossibly large at the time. She remembered the Aderan Circuit of her youth, when she had fought her way through its challenges and emerged victorious.
She had defeated the Knight known as Daedric, who would later disappear from the public eye.
And she had defeated Zenith, too.
Back then, he had not yet reached the height of his power.
Her eyes returned to the Grandmaster, who stood beside her with his customary composure.
"Ah, Jackson."
Zenith turned his head toward her.
The Empress's lips curled into a smile.
"Your peak took quite a while to arrive, didn't it?"
For a moment, the Grandmaster simply stared at her.
Then the Empress chuckled.
It was a small, genuine sound, utterly at odds with the formality of the ceremony.
Zenith gave her a look that suggested he had heard this particular recollection before.
"Your Majesty," he replied evenly, "I believe we have a ceremony to finish."
"Of course, of course."
Her smile lingered as she turned back toward the audience.
But the memory remained.
The Azeran Circuit had produced another generation of competitors, another collection of young people who believed they understood the limits of their abilities and the shape of their futures.
And, as she had learned long ago, those assumptions rarely survived the years that followed.
