Chapter 53 - Chapter 53:Threat

Faith's POV

I had not slept well in days.

Felix was still not awake. He was not awake and it hurt in a way I could not put into words.

I kept finding myself drifting toward his room, pushing the door open just enough to check if maybe his eyes were open.

They never were.

He had too many tubes to help him breathe, and I hated them. I hated the sound they made, the cold mechanical rhythm that was the only proof he was still here. It was a cruel reminder that his body was alive but he was not.

I needed to distract myself before I went insane, so I ended up in his office.

I told myself I was just looking around, but my hands were already moving, pulling open drawers, sifting through papers, searching for I did not know what. Until I saw it.

A black book on his desk.

It was heavy when I picked it up, the cover smooth and strangely warm, like it had a pulse of its own. For a second, I almost dropped it.

I sat down in his chair and started reading. Hours slipped away.
