Chapter 6 - The Nameless Phantom’s Descent

The night air was thick with the scent of damp stone and filth. Hidden beneath the bustling city of Eldoria, a maze of underground tunnels twisted and stretched, far from the reach of the law. This was the domain of slavers, criminals, and desperate men who thrived in the dark corners of the world. And tonight, it was the perfect stage for a performance.

Kairon Nocturne, all of ten years old, stood at the entrance of a dimly lit corridor, a lazy smile playing on his lips. Six months had passed since the Ceberus had dispersed, each member embarking on their own missions across the globe.

Kairon, however, had felt a pull towards this city, this den of iniquity. He had learned of its dark underbelly, the whispers of a vast criminal network operating beneath the veneer of respectability. It was the perfect opportunity to further his plans, to hone his skills as a manipulator, to become the mastermind he had always envisioned.

The flickering torchlight barely touched his silhouette, leaving him half-swallowed by the shadows. He could hear the distant clatter of chains, the muffled sobs of prisoners, and the guttural laughter of their captors.

"A hidden criminal empire flourishing beneath the city, controlling everything from underground fights to human trafficking…"

He placed a hand on his chin, nodding to himself. "What a perfect setting for the rise of a legendary figure who operates in the darkness."

To anyone else, this place was a nightmare. But for Kairon, it was an opportunity.

He wasn't here as "Phantom." Not yet. Instead, he would become nothing. Just another nameless captive, a mere speck in the background. He would play his role perfectly, fading into obscurity, listening, watching, waiting—until the moment came to flip the entire stage upside down

The plan was simple: get captured. Kairon had spent the past few days observing the slavers' patterns, their preferred hunting grounds, their methods of subduing their victims.

He had then carefully crafted his own persona, a vulnerable, desperate child, ripe for the taking.

He had donned ragged clothes, smeared dirt on his face, and even practiced a convincingly terrified expression. He had then deliberately wandered into the slavers' territory, his heart pounding with a mixture of fear and excitement.

It hadn't taken long for them to notice him. Two burly men, their faces scarred and their eyes gleaming with malice, had approached him, their hands reaching for the crude clubs at their belts.

Kairon had cowered, his body trembling, his voice a whimper. "Please... don't hurt me..."

The slavers had laughed, their voices cruel and mocking. They had grabbed him, their rough hands bruising his arms, and dragged him towards a waiting carriage. Kairon had struggled, but his resistance was half-hearted, a carefully calculated performance.

He had been thrown into the back of the carriage, his body landing with a thud amongst other prisoners. He had glanced around, taking in the faces of his fellow captives – fear, despair, and resignation etched into their features.

He had closed his eyes, a small smile playing on his lips. The first act of his play had begun.

Kairon sat cross-legged on the cold stone floor, blending seamlessly with the huddled figures around him. He could feel their eyes—some filled with fear, others with empty resignation.

"Hmmm… how should I act? Should I go for the 'mysterious yet wise old prisoner' approach? Or maybe the 'broken man who has lost all hope' role?"

Before he could decide, a voice interrupted his thoughts.

"You just got caught too, huh?"

A young man with unkempt hair and sunken eyes sat beside him. He looked older than Kairon, perhaps in his early twenties, and wore tattered clothes that suggested he had been here for a while.

Kairon blinked. A perfect opportunity to blend in.

"Y-Yeah…" He slumped his shoulders and sighed heavily, making his voice sound weak. "I… I was just trying to survive. I had nothing left… so they took me…"

The man nodded solemnly. "That's how it is. If you're weak, you're just another piece of meat for them to sell."

Kairon nodded dramatically. "Y-Yeah… meat… so true…"

Ah, what an immersive experience. I'm really getting into the role now.

Another prisoner joined the conversation—a woman with bruises on her arms. "Where do you think they'll send us?"

The first man scoffed. "Does it matter? Either we get sold as workers, thrown into the arena to die for their entertainment, or worse…" His voice dropped. "Some get taken to the Black Rooms. No one knows what happens there, but the ones who return… aren't the same anymore."

The Black Rooms. Now that was interesting.

Kairon nodded along with the conversation, looking just scared enough to blend in. So there's a deeper mystery hidden within this organization. A dark experiment linked to the Black Covenant, perhaps? This was exactly the kind of thing a true obscurity would stumble upon. Perfect.

After hours of waiting, the prisoners were rounded up and moved deeper into the underground network.

As Kairon walked among the shackled slaves, he took in the surroundings—the placement of guards, the number of exits, the structure of the tunnels. It was all being burned into his mind. A true background character wouldn't just survive in this situation—he would thrive in it.

They were eventually led into a massive, circular chamber lit by golden chandeliers. Above them, high-ranking nobles with mask and robed figures sat in private viewing boxes, whispering amongst themselves. At the center of the chamber stood a grand auction stage.

Kairon kept his head down, playing his part as the auctioneer stepped forward.

"Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we present only the finest specimens! Strong men for labor, exotic beauties for your pleasure, and even a few rare individuals for… special purposes."

The crowd murmured in approval. Kairon remained still. Waiting.

"The Perfect Moment"

Then it happened. As the bidding began, the torches suddenly flickered and died. The entire chamber plunged into darkness.

For a single heartbeat, there was silence. Then—

"You who trade in flesh and corruption… the Nameless Phantom has come."

A gust of wind swept through the chamber, and the iron shackles of every prisoner shattered all at once. Gasps and screams filled the air. The guards rushed forward—only to be cut down instantly by unseen blades.

A shadow moved. A figure stepped onto the auction stage, cloak billowing, bathed in the returning torchlight.

Kairon smiled.

"I was never your captive." His voice, amplified by a subtle spell, carried through the chamber, cold and absolute. "This stage… was simply my entrance."

The auction house erupted into chaos.

The grand auction hall, once filled with the arrogant laughter of nobles and the clinking of gold, now drowned in silence. The torches snuffed out, plunging the chamber into absolute darkness. And then, the screams began.

For the slavers and guards, it was as if the world itself had abandoned them. But within that abyss, something moved. Something inhuman.

A guard, blade trembling in his grip, felt a sudden gust of wind brush past him. His instincts screamed—too late.

A cold whisper kissed his ear. "Behind you."

A heartbeat later, a dagger tore through his spine. His body fell without a sound.

Another guard flinched, whirling around. His breath came in ragged gasps as he peered into the suffocating blackness.

"Where is he?! Someone light the—"

A flash of steel. A single line of red appeared across his throat. Silence. Then—his head tumbled to the floor.

The nobles watched in horrified fascination from their private boxes. Their guards were not being killed. They were being erased.

"GET THE LIGHTS BACK ON!" someone bellowed.

A desperate slaver fumbled for a lantern, his fingers slipping in his panic. He barely managed to light it—only for the Phantom to appear right before him.

Cloaked in flowing black, he did not walk—he glided, like a specter untouched by the laws of reality. Eyes glowing faintly beneath his hood, he tilted his head, as if studying the slaver with amusement.

The slaver's lips trembled. "W-Wait, please, I can pay—"

Kairon raised a single finger to his lips. "Shh."

The lantern flickered—then exploded into darkness once more. A scream followed. Then, silence.

The slavers and guards finally broke. "This isn't a man—he's a demon!"

They rushed the exit, shoving one another aside in their desperation to flee. But as the doors burst open, they found themselves staring into the cold, unfeeling gazes of the phantom. Kairon had anticipated their escape route.

One noble dropped to his knees, his face twisted in despair. "There's no escape…!"

The door slammed shut behind them.

The final survivor a brute of a man clad in black armor stood trembling, his weapon slipping from his grasp. His gaze flickered to the Phantom standing above him.

"You… w-what are you?" he choked out.

The Nameless Phantom took a step forward, his presence suffocating.

"I am the shadow that watches." Another step. "I am the abyss that whispers."

The brute collapsed to his knees. Kairon tilted his head, a flicker of amusement in his eyes.

Then, in an instant he was gone.

The brute's eyes widened. Then his body fell apart, severed into pieces by invisible blades.

The battle had lasted mere minutes. The grand auction hall once a palace of greed and cruelty now lay bathed in crimson.

The freed slaves stood in stunned silence, staring at the figure on the ruined stage. One by one, they fell to their knees, not in worship, but in fear.

No one knew his name. No one knew where he had come from.

But whispers of "The Nameless Phantom" would spread like wildfire.

And as Kairon turned, his cloak billowing behind him, he sighed. "Alright. Time to head back."

He raised his hand, and a ring of fire erupted around him, momentarily illuminating the carnage. Then, with a snap of his fingers, the flames vanished, and so did the Phantom, leaving behind only the echoes of his legend.
