Jin woke up to the sound of his screen clicking.
It wasn't loud. Just the soft, small click a message made when it came in. But it kept happening, one after another, click, click, click, and somewhere in the middle of a dream he couldn't remember, it pulled him up and out of sleep.
He lay there with his eyes closed for a second, hoping it would stop.
Click.
He opened his eyes. The room was grey with early light. The handgun and the little stone lion were sitting on the table beside his bed where he'd left them. He reached over and opened his screen.
There were eleven messages. Nine of them were from Ho-seok.
Jin sat up.
"Jin. You there?"
"Jin, answer me."
"Are you okay? Is Seoul okay?"
"I know we said we'd keep it quiet but I'm asking anyway."
"Jin."
"Seriously. Answer."
"I'm not joking around."
"Please."
"JIN."
The last one had come in less than a minute ago.
Jin rubbed his eyes and typed back.
"I'm here. I'm fine. What's going on?"
