The school gate was already open when they reached it.
People were everywhere. They filled the yard and spilled out past the gate into the street, families with kids on their hips, old men still holding the tools they had been working with, captains' students standing in loose groups and looking at each other like someone was supposed to tell them something. Nobody was screaming. Nobody was running for the walls. But the noise of a few hundred people all talking at once rolled over the four of them as they came up the street, and Jin could hear the edge in it, the sound of people holding themselves together because they didn't know what else to do.
A boy on the wall saw them first.
"Jin's here!" he shouted, and the whole yard turned.
