CHAPTER 129
The next morning broke heavy with clouds. The sun struggled behind a dull sky, and the courtyard seemed quieter than usual. Grace stood by the window of her chamber, her hands behind her back, gazing across the gray horizon. The decision had already taken root within her, if no one else would dare to chase Robert's shadow, she would.
A knock sounded. Mathew Sterrn entered, holding a bundle of rolled parchments. His expression told her he had been awake nearly as long as she had.
"These are the remaining ledgers from Robert's command. I had them pulled from the archives," he said. "But they add little. The same strange entries, the same inconsistencies. It is enough to raise suspicion, but not enough to pin treason."
Grace turned to face him. "Then suspicion is not enough. We must see where it all leads."
Mathew studied her carefully. "You mean to leave the palace."
"I do."
