Chapter 74 - A Lost Paige Part 7 (Drake)

7.

Drake stared.

"...We sustained a few minor injuries but we're through. Paige split in two and this person told me to leave her."

Jin glared.

Drake's eyes locked on his shirt.

'A few injuries?' The blood on him isn't his, is it?

Drake marched to the spot where the heat had been, groping the air.

"We've got to get her back!" He yelled.

Kama spoke for the first time since landing.

"Dummy, it's not that easy. You have to create a gateway. And to make a gateway you have to know where you're going."

Drake swung at Kama who stepped in, his palm catching Drake in the neck and shoved. To keep from tripping Drake's feet were a rush of activity. He looked like he was tap dancing on quicksand. By the time he was stable Kama was already towering over him.

There'd be no getting past.

Isolated from the others, Drake could barely breath.

"You can't be serious; we can't leave her like this." He panted.

"Yeah, we can't." Kama agreed.

"Then let me go!"

Kama didn't say a word, simply staring. Drake's chest was heaving, using the very hands shutting him down as a crutch.

"Drake" Jin called.

"I'm coming!" Drake yelled.

"To do what? Naya will help. You need to breathe."

Drake tried sidestepping but Kama shook his head and put an arm around him, walking him further away.

The world was open and wide, but he was constricted, chained in his skin. Kama kept walking him, it… helped?

"If we can help Paige, we will. But you need to calm down." Kama eventually landslided.

And, locked in the bigger man's embrace, there was little to do but try, grappling helplessly against his uselessness.

"You know," Drake breathed into Kama's shoulder after another failed escape. "I didn't have many friends and I've been fine with that."

"Don't need many." Kama bouldered.

"Yeah, Jin and Paige are better than a crowd."

"One is better than all." His voice cosplayed an easter island statue.

"Yeah." Drake said, breathing like he'd forgotten how. "I lost Jin for a month. Now… One of my friends needs help, I want to help! Like Jin."

"Not everyone's Jin, trust me. You're better off."

"Bullshit, I'm a spectator. Even Naya fought. Jin jumped right in."

"He's too calm and calculating, no one knows what he's thinking." Kama hissed, it was an avalanche in Drake's ear, but in it was bitterness?

"He's still did better than us."

"Bullshit. I'm amazing."

Drake smirked and patted Kama on the shoulder, it was enough to earn freedom.

They walked back.

Drake marched to the Green-Eyed Paige who was up straight. Her wounds already dry, leaving scabs and purple patches.

"Tell us who you are and what's going on."

His tone grim, his face working hard to be cool.

Naya screamed.

Drake jerked to see her stumble and fall under Jin's weight. His face pale, clothes dripping blood.
