When Fu Ling woke up, he felt the presence of another person on his bed but he didn't attach because it was a familiar person. He snuggled into the warm embrace and put his head on the person's chest and the stood up.
Gu Yunnain who had been lying down stiffly looking at the ceiling all this while, could finally sigh in relief and got up as well.
Fu Ling was slightly embarrassed. Seems like he wasn't dreaming?
"When did you come?"
Gu Yunnain rubbed his tousled hair
"A while ago. Your parents should be waiting to hear from you."
That was when Fu Ling realized he should give them an explanation. He pushed Gu Yunnain out and went to have a shower.
He came out feeling refreshed and a lot more clear headed. He met them eating dinner and unceremoniously took a seat. He didn't know how to broach the subject so he decided to just say it.
"About these past few days—"
Fu Yongle waved his hand
"It's okay. Kids have their own lives. We won't restrict you. All you need to do is pay attention to your health."
Xiu Jing didn't say anything but there was unconcealed worry in her eyes. I felt warm in my heart and nodded.
"I'll take good care of my health."
Dinner ended on a good note and I saw Gu Yunnain off. His car couldn't come in so we walked to the intersection where it was parked.
"Has it been here all along?"
I was a bit worried. This wasn't the safest neighbourhood.
He shook his head.
"I had the driver pick it up and then bring it back"
I nodded in realization
"Ohhhhh okay then."
We got to the car and I stood awkwardly
"Well then, see you later?"
I could swear I caught a flash if amusement in his eyes.
"See you later."
I watched the car until the taillights disappeared before turning around.
The couple had already gone to bed so I carefully closed the door and went to my room.
I finally had time to look at my phone that had been abandoned for days. Gu Yunnain sent me a lot of messages. I replied them all carefully and asked if he had gotten home.
There was also messages from other people I didn't recognize and some group messages had already gone over two thousand.
I clicked on a group and realized I was actually one of the main characters. They were all talking about the Fu family holding the wrong baby. None of the people involved came to confirm it but no one refuted it either which made them extremely curious.
Someone noticed I was online and began to mention me in the group. I quit the group and looked at the others.
The were basically all the same. Groups for dandy young masters to share gossip. They were quite up to date with the news too but I wasn't in the mood to appreciate their information network.
I looked at the circle of friends that spanned years and compared it to the time it would take for me to delete everything. I decisively chose to give up on this account. I logged out and created a new account.
I sent Gu Yunnain a friend request and indicated who I was then dropped the phone and went to bed.
The next morning I checked and Gu Yunnain had passed the friendship verification. I took a picture of the sky through the window and posted it on my status then went to wash up.
We had breakfast and I was clearing out the dishes when there was a knock on the door. I went to the kitchen and started cleaning the plates when my dad came over.
"They're guests in the living room"
I was a bit confused. What did this have to do with me? But I suddenly realized. I wiped my hands on the kitchen towel and followed him out.
All three members of the Fu family were sitting stiffly on the chair. Fu Shilei looked like someone held a gun to his head, Feng Boqi looked anxious and Fu Haoming looked like he'd rather be anywhere but here.
All three heads whipped to the side when the noticed the presence of another person.
Feng Boqi sprang up from the chair and rushed to hold my hand.
"Baby how are you? Do you have enough to eat? Are they treating you well?"
I pulled out my hands from hers and gently ushered her back to sit and gave Fu Shilei a look of 'take care of your wife'.
I smiled when I saw he grabbed her hand to prevent her from rushing up again.
"I'm very fine. I feel free and refreshed. The food is delicious. I've never had a mother's cooking before. I'm glad. They treat me exceptionally well too. They made sure I had my own room that's never been used before. They're really good people."
Every words I said would surely pierce her heart but I didn't care. It felt a bit funny.
Fu Haoming smiled brightly.
"I didn't expect that they would still keep my room-"
I rolled my eyes
"Of course they world. They're not heartless. Besides wouldn't you keep your 'missing' child's room? They didn't know their dearest son had already begun calling another couple mom and dad. It's so pitiful"
Fu Haoming wanted to say something else but Fu Shilei stopped him. He pointed to the bunch of gifts on the floor.
"We are indeed at fault in this matter. We were just too happy to find out biological child that we didn't think it through. This is our compensation."
I looked at the brand names on the floor and sneered inwardly but showed a smile.
"It's genuine enough. But we don't need it."
The atmosphere stagnated and Fu Haoming was the first person to go off.
"What is wrong with you Fu Ling? Why must you humiliate my parents like this? You asked them to come apologize now that we're here you say it's not necessary? Don't forget that they raised you!"
I narrowed my eyes slightly.
"I should be the one saying that to you. Don't forget that they raised you. Accord them the necessary respect. Since you came here, you've had your nose in the air. Don't forget that this is the house you grew up in. Put away that disgusting attitude before I get upset."
Fu Shilei pulled him behind himself and I tsked
"What a lovely display of affection.. Don't make me say it again. Take these things away. My parents do not need those inferior goods. I also don't need anyone to hand out charity. I can take care of them myself. I'll see you out."
I watched them pack the bags from the floor and then sent them out. When they were out the door, Fu Shilei suddenly stopped.
"Was it you?"
No other words were said but we both knew what he was talking about. I tilted my head in amusement.
"Guess"
