Chapter 2 - A New Challenge Begins

Ethan

I watched him disappear into the shadows, and I couldn't lie he was impressive.

Power like that doesn't lie. In the supernatural world, everything shows your scent, your eyes, your fur.

Red eyes and dark fur? Alpha.

Golden eyes and brown fur? Beta.

Blue eyes and silver fur? Omega.

He was definitely an alpha. At least, that's what it looked like.

But I didn't fear him. Not one bit.

Maybe it's because I'm not human either.

Half-werewolf. Half-vampire.

I was about to leave when that girl from earlier ran up to me.

"Hi! Thank you so much. My name is Lylia," she said, smiling at me like I'd saved her life.

I didn't really feel like talking. I came here for one reason.

But she could be useful.

"Ethan."

She tilted her head. "Is there anything I can do to thank you?"

I smirked. "Nah. I got what I needed."

She looked confused. But that didn't matter.

Because the person I really wanted something from… was already walking away, full of rage.

And I'd see him again soon.

Nicolas

I couldn't sleep after the race. Couldn't stop thinking about how it ended.

How he crossed the line first.

How she ran to him.

How I was the one standing there like a joke.

So when I walked into class late the next day, I didn't care.

"Mr. Reed, you're late," the teacher snapped.

I stared at him. "So?"

That shut him up.

I took my usual seat at the back. My eyes locked on Lylia. She didn't look back.

Coward.

But the room shifted the second he walked in.

Black jacket. Same smug expression. That guy again.

Alice leaned over. "It's him," she whispered, smirking.

"The transfer student," the teacher said. "Name?"

"Ethan Blackwood. Transferred from Sky State High."

That name made the whole class stir.

Sky State? That's the elite of elites.

Of course he would be from there.

I clenched my jaw.

"Some students might need to accept they're not top dog anymore," Mr. Gordon muttered, glancing my way.

Tch. I've been on top for years. This guy thinks one race changes anything?

"Calm down, Nick," Nathan muttered beside me.

Then came the question.

"what supernatural creature are you ?" the teacher asked.

"Vampire," Ethan said.

Liar.

His aura was off. Not wolf. Not vampire. Something else. And I hated not knowing.

"Where do you want to sit?"

"Sir, he can sit with me," Lylia said quickly.

Of course she did.

He walked past my desk. Our eyes met for a second.

He smirked.

I didn't look away. But I felt my chest tighten.

They sat together the whole class. Laughing. Whispering.

She looked at him like she used to look at me.

That… pissed me off.

Lunch

We entered the cafeteria, and yeah, I already knew where they'd be.

Ethan and Lylia were at the center of a group. Talking. Laughing.

Her eyes were glowing at something he said.

I snapped.

I marched over and yanked her up by the wrist.

"We need to talk. Now."

She pulled her hand away, hard. "No. I don't want to."

I froze.

Ethan stood up, slow and smooth.

"The infamous Nicolas Reed," he said, tilting his head. "Nice to meet you again."

I glared at him. "Likewise."

Lylia crossed her arms. "What do you want, Nicolas?"

"What's your problem?" I snapped. "Calling me Nicolas now? What happened to Nico? Have you forgotten you're my—"

"Your what?" Ethan cut in sharply.

He stepped closer. His voice dripped with sarcasm. "Your girl? Nah. I won the bet, remember?"

I lunged forward and grabbed his collar.

"You don't know who you're messing with."

He chuckled.

"Oh, I think I do," Ethan said. "And honestly? You're not that impressive."

The air around us went tense.

Lylia tried to say something, but I wasn't listening anymore.

My heart was pounding—not from anger. From something else.

Something in his scent. His presence.

It felt… familiar.

And I hated it.

This wasn't just about Lylia anymore.

This wasn't over.
