The Geass Order was the largest organization hidden in the darkness of this world, a mysterious group seeking the power of GEASS. They conducted various human experiments to study this power, backed by the Holy Britannian Empire. The current leader, V.V., was the biological elder brother of the Holy Britannian Empire's Emperor, Charles zi Britannia.
GEASS was a special ability bestowed by a CODE holder upon those with the aptitude for it.
The defining characteristic was the appearance of a red GEASS symbol in the user's eyes when activated.
The abilities of GEASS varied from person to person. As the power was used, it would gradually grow stronger, eventually reaching a point beyond the user's control.
If this happened, those who could not overcome it risked being consumed by their own power.
Although GEASS abilities possessed vastly different traits, they could generally be summarized in one sentence: GEASS is the power of "fusion" with others.
If one wished to understand another's heart, they could merge with their thoughts and see into their mind. If one wished to know what another intended to do, they could merge with their thoughts and predict their actions. If one wished to be loved by others, they could merge with their thoughts and compel them to give their love...
In reality, the thoughts, spirits, and souls of others were protected by solid, impenetrable walls, impossible for anyone other than the individual to interfere with. GEASS was the ability to contact these inner realms, act upon them, and achieve an effect; it was the manifestation of human desire.
The wish to reach someone's heart—although everyone's GEASS was different, they all served to reach the destination within the heart that the user desired.
In short, GEASS could fulfill any wish of the wielder.
Yang Hui looked down upon the scientific technology of this world. Without needing anyone else, he could simply take the Dawn Gundam and sweep through the entire world with overwhelming force.
However, this world was defined as a low-level Fantasy-type World, with a difficulty higher than most Real-type Worlds, and the reason lay in the special ability known as GEASS.
GEASS abilities were myriad and unique. C.C.'s power to be loved, Mao's mind-reading, Lelouch's Absolute Command, Charles zi Britannia's memory manipulation, Marianne's soul diving, and the Knight of One Bismarck Waldstein's precognition of the immediate future...
Every ability that had appeared, if used well, was a broken, "BUG-level" existence.
Yang Hui was also curious about what kind of ability he would receive if he obtained GEASS. As for his wish... perhaps to complete the mission of Prometheus Fortress alongside his companions?
GEASS could only be bestowed by someone possessing a CODE. Currently, there were only two people with a CODE: C.C. and V.V. The latter was the core secret of the Holy Britannian Empire, and Yang Hui couldn't seek him out just yet, so C.C. became Yang Hui's target.
As for the contract required when receiving GEASS... C.C. had simply lived for too long. Watching the people around her be born and die, her heart had been killed by loneliness, which was why she sought death.
But if she knew that Prometheus Fortress was filled with people who were immortal just like her, would she still seek death?
Regarding the power of immortality, Yang Hui remembered that the reason CODE holders were immortal—not dying even if their vitals were struck—was because the C World recorded the physical data of the CODE holder. When the holder's body was damaged, the injured organs were swapped with perfect ones generated by the C World.
However, in other worlds, the C World did not exist, so a CODE holder would still die.
Therefore, Yang Hui chose this world specifically because of the existence of GEASS; otherwise, he really wouldn't have been interested in it.
"Mr. Yang Hui, we are about to arrive at the target location."
"...Stand by on-site."
Setting aside his thoughts, the two modified Glasgow units came to a halt, waiting for Cornelia's orders.
There were three anti-air positions in total, and they had to be destroyed simultaneously. The timing had to be precise, waiting for the massive EU army from the north to enter the designated air strike zone.
If one side attacked too early or was wiped out too soon, the EU commander might guess the Britannian army's air strike plan. It had to be timed perfectly so the EU commander wouldn't have time to react.
After a short wait, Cornelia's command arrived. The two Glasgows immediately started up, sliding across the plains and closing in on the anti-air positions at maximum speed.
It had to be said that the EU's Radar Detection System was excellent. It detected the positions of the two Glasgows from a great distance, and the garrisoned troops moved quickly.
Unfortunately, they had encountered beings known as "Demons" across countless worlds. The machines dodged the dense barrage with elegant maneuvers, lunging into the crowd of prey like hungry wolves, hunting everything in sight.
The defensive line was quickly shredded. Several Grenades were tossed toward the Ammunition Depot and the anti-air batteries. The long-barreled Grenades expanded in mid-air, unleashing a dense barrage. A metal storm tore everything apart; the anti-air batteries were reduced to scrap, and the Ammunition Depot exploded violently, sending flames soaring into the sky.
"Withdraw."
This time, Yang Hui did not slaughter the lucky survivors. After destroying the Ammunition Depot and all anti-air fire, he immediately turned and left the position, heading due south toward the main Western EU army.
"Yare yare, it looks like we'll have to change Mobile Suits again," Regene Regetta said with a wry smile. Simply destroying an anti-air position didn't place a heavy burden on the machines, but Yang Hui intended to launch a flank assault on the main EU force. Even with reinforced frames, they wouldn't hold up—it was just a matter of whether they fell apart sooner or later.
"I really wanted to use the Dawn Gundam."
"Indeed. If the Dawn Gundam were here, we wouldn't need such a complex plan."
"Let's go. Once we win this battle, we can focus on developing in peace for a while."
"Yes, your highness."
"That's not like you."
"When in Rome."
"Heh."
...
At the frontline command post, Cornelia sat inside her unit, looking at the distant plumes of smoke. She knew Yang Hui and the others had succeeded. In fact, she had never considered the possibility of failure, so she had ordered the Airborne Unit to take off even before the news arrived.
"Your Highness, the reconnaissance unit reports that the enemy forces to the north have entered the designated area!"
"The western enemy forces are 50 kilometers from the command post, consisting of War chariots and artillery units!"
"The eastern enemy forces are 60 kilometers away, also consisting of War chariots and artillery units..."
"All forces enter defensive fortifications! Knightmares, retreat and take cover! The enemy bombardment is coming!" hearing the report, Cornelia issued her orders. Knightmares could certainly treat War chariots and artillery like paper tigers, but they were quite vulnerable to saturated artillery strikes. The pressure on the eastern and western defenses would surely be immense, and she couldn't afford to waste her limited forces.
Sure enough, a moment later, countless whistling sounds filled the sky. Dense black dots grew larger and larger in everyone's vision as shells fell like rain upon the ground.
Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!
For a time, the deafening roar stole people's hearing. Soil and dust flew everywhere, blanketing the people in the fortifications in a thick layer of grit. The earth shook so violently that it was impossible to stand steadily.
"Hmph, the same old tricks. The mediocre fools of the EU," Cornelia sneered as she watched the EU's tactics.
The EU had relied on this strategy to maintain a stalemate with Britannia for nearly a year. Just as the EU studied Britannia, Britannia also studied the EU, having long since figured out these tactics. The stalemate hadn't been broken because the EU could still hold their own using this method.
But now that the stalemate had been shattered, using the same old tricks against Britannia was an invitation to defeat.
The saturated bombardment lasted for half an hour. The area where the defensive fortifications were located was plowed by intense fire, and the ground had visibly sunk by about half a meter.
"That's enough. All units into defensive posture! Knightmare units, move into the fortifications! The enemy War chariot units are coming!"
"Yes, your highness!"
"What's the situation in the north? Was the air strike successful?"
"Your Highness, the Airborne Unit was successful! It is estimated that 70% of the EU forces were eliminated! Ammunition is depleted; requesting to return to base."
"Return granted."
Everything was proceeding according to the operational plan. The northern front, which originally posed the greatest threat, no longer existed. Now, it remained to be seen if she could hold out until the reinforcements from the rear arrived.
Beep, beep, beep...
"They're here! All units, commence the attack!"
"Yes, your highness!"
...
"Mr. Yang Hui, they are in sight."
"Mm. How much time has passed since the first wave of shelling?"
"Twenty-seven minutes."
"Three minutes. That's enough to wipe out their artillery unit!"
"Understood."
Half an hour was the interval between artillery strikes. Due to the overheating issues of the EU's standard artillery barrels, there was a thirty-minute window for the barrels to cool after every half hour of saturated fire. If the assault troops couldn't capture the enemy position within these thirty minutes, they would retreat, and the artillery would open fire again. This cycle was the standard EU tactic.
There were three minutes left before the next bombardment began. It was short, but it was enough for Yang Hui and Regene Regetta to charge into the EU's artillery positions. Once a Knightmare got close to artillery, the gunners couldn't run and couldn't fight; they could only wait for death.
At first, when the two Glasgows were discovered, the EU commander scoffed and ordered a small group of War chariots to eliminate them. The result...
Amidst terrified gazes, the friendly markers on the radar system vanished in swathes. The comms were filled with constant screaming, pleas for mercy, and explosions.
"How... how is this possible? Is that rumor true!?"
Only then did he recall the previous rumors: two Glasgows that had destroyed several military fortresses and conquered the Lubudi Base.
"Demons... they are demons..."
"Sir! The artillery unit has suffered heavy losses! They cannot support the next wave of fire!"
"Enemy machines are approaching the command post at high speed! Distance 1000..."
"Quick... retreat..."
Bang, bang, bang, bang...
The EU officer turned to flee the command post even as he was issuing orders, but how could two legs outrun a Knightmare? How could they outrun cannon shells?
