Chapter 3 - Plunder

Outer space.

If the satellites outside Earth were not infested with zombies at this time, the people in them would be wither in panic or in awe at the sight before them.

Flowing strings of pale blue light were emerging from the darkness of space and seeping into the Earth one at a time.

Once they entered the atmosphere, they turned completely invisible and seeped deep underground.

They were called strings because of the relative size of the planet below, but in reality each of them were close to a hundred meters thick.

This scene reminded one of just one view. It was that of the strings of a puppet. Th puppeteer slowly pulling and releasing the strings to his puppet…

As if this was but a game.

...

Gerald took inventory of his food stock. And let's just say it was a bit… scarce.

'This'll barely last me four days.' Gerald pondered calmly.

In order not to starve to death, there was only one way to go.

Plunder the other rooms!

He was on the second floor, so he was a safe distance from the copious amounts of zombies on the streets. Besides, the narrow space significantly dropped the chances of him being surrounded.

'As it is now, I only have the confidence to face the zombies one on one… Though I can guess that I'll probably get stronger with each battle.'

He clenched and unclenched his fists, licking his lips as he reminisced the feeling of dancing at the edge of life and death.

'I should have probably taking up extreme sports before this hell began. Didn't know I had such a thrill-seeking side.'

After some time of planning, he finally had a clear understanding of what to do next.

He outlined the rooms along his floor from memory, recalling the ones occupied and the vacant ones. If anyone within those rooms had survived, then he wouldn't bother them, but for any room that had zombies...

'I have to engage.'

He had an inkling that zombies probably grew stronger with time, so he had to clean up all the ones he could that could pose a real threat in the future.

Gerald's expression suddenly darkened as he thought of something he had overlooked till now.

'Dad.'

He reached for his phone shakily and scrolled through his contact list, feeling a hint of worry.

*RING*RING*RING*

*BEEP*BEEP*

 No answer.

Uneasiness crept into his heart, and he imagined the worst.

'He should be safe.'

Gerald hesitated slightly before setting the phone down.

'If I get the opportunity, I definitely have to go to New York.'

His father lived in a different state, and even though they didn't usually have much contact, Gerald still cared a lot about his safety. After all, he was his only known family.

He went straight to the shower and scrubbed off the filth and bloodstains on his body, before going to his room to sleep.

At first, he was unable to, constantly being awoken by the occasional roars and screams outside, and getting up several times to check on the door.

But he eventually drifted off to sleep.

A dreamless sleep...
