Dr. Ren rushed in, shoving Ruihuang aside as gently as he could.
He checked her vitals and then he froze.
There was no pulse.
He couldn't hear her heart beat.
"Jesus! Cardiac arrest at a time like.." he muttered grimly, already beginning resuscitation. He pressed down hard on her chest, rhythmically, desperately.
Sweat dripped from his brow as the minutes dragged on, his voice low and urgent with every count.
"Come on, come on… breathe, damn it!"
But her body gave no response.
"Again!" Ruihuang barked, gripping the edge of the futon like it could anchor him. His face was pale, his eyes wide with terror.
Dr. Ren pressed harder, his hands unrelenting, but when he finally opened her eyelids and saw how her eyes had turned completely white.
He froze.
His hands trembled. His lips parted, but no words came. Then his head lowered, his shoulders shaking as silent tears escaped.
"She's gone…" he whispered hoarsely. "I'm… I'm sorry."
