Chapter 211: The Last One
"What's taking so long? Unlock that door already!" one of the Death Eaters told his partner. "There is someone else in the house."
The Death Eater responded by taking off his mask, revealing his identity as Edwin Lestrange, current lord of the house. "You think I didn't hear that, Karkaroff?" he spat.
"Don't say my name out loud! What if someone hears you and tells—"
"No one cares for your reputation. And be quiet already, I need to concentrate." Edwin turned his attention back to the sealed gate.
Some of the runes around the door had been burned off, but there were still many left.
"This will still take me a few more minutes."
"We don't have that long! What if they've already called the Aurors?" Karkaroff asked.
"The floo network is blocked, and any other form of messaging will take hours to deliver. I'm not leaving this place until I'm sure every single member of this family is dead." Edwin's eyes were almost glowing red with all the accumulated hatred. "Then I will go for the Potters." He pointed toward the stairs. "Instead of standing there, go down and help Malfoy take care of whoever came inside. It's probably the middle sister."
"Things have gone quiet all of a sudden…" Karkaroff pointed out. "I don't like it."
"Stop being such a coward. Go already. Or do you want to suffer our Lord's wrath when we tell him that we failed our mission?"
Karkaroff went paler after hearing Lestrange's words. "I'll go."
Feeling he had no other choice, the man adjusted his mask, held his wand firmly, and walked to the stairs.
Right as he was about to reach the first step, he noticed something strange. The image of the stairs had warped slightly. It was like something transparent had stepped before him.
His eyes widened when he realized this was someone using an invisibility charm. "Homenum Rev—"
It was already too late.
He felt a mighty pressure on his chest before his entire body went flying like a puppet and hit the back wall.
"Urgg…" Karkaroff could hear and feel his bones cracking and breaking, but at least he was still alive.
Edwin Lestrange heard the sudden commotion and was forced to shift his focus away from the door, just in time to see his partner being flung across the air by a powerful charm.
He couldn't catch a glimpse of the attacker, but he did see a spark of purple light coming from their wand when they fired another spell at Karkaroff.
"Avada Kedavra!" Lestrange responded instantly, firing his most deadly curse in the general direction of the attacker.
James's curse left his wand and hit Karkaroff in the chest, creating a cut across the man's torso that left a purple residue behind.
Just a moment after shooting, he noted the eerie green light from the Killing Curse approaching him.
He didn't need to move, as this one had no chance to hit him and passed by.
"Homenum Revelio!" Lestrange didn't wait to use his next spell after realizing his enemy was using an invisibility spell.
"There you are…" He immediately spotted a red silhouette, marked by his magic.
"You are the last one. Then I have no more need for this." James removed the charm he had placed on himself, showing himself to his opponent, whose face contorted with rage as recognition sank in.
"Potter!" Edwin Lestrange screamed. He had been dreaming about confronting this boy. "You… it's all your fault!"
Ever since the first time he had seen James Potter, things had started going downhill for him and his family.
Since that cursed day when they came to visit Lord Black to confront him about the marriage contracts.
After the loss of those important contracts, he began to lose his sons as well, one by one… now he had nothing left but his thirst for vengeance.
"You look familiar…" James squinted his eyes. "What was your name again?"
Lestrange looked shocked for a moment by the ridiculous question. The boy who ruined his life didn't even remember him? This was too much.
"Crucio!" He had never fired a curse with more hatred than now.
James conjured a small wall of bricks to intercept the curse.
These exploded into a hundred pieces as they received the powerful spell. However, James kept them floating in place with a quick levitating charm, and immediately followed it with a vanishing charm, sending the conjured sharp fragments flying back at Lestrange like bullets.
"Ahh!" Edwin Lestrange formed a protective shield around himself, blocking most of the fragments, except for a few that struck his feet and legs, causing serious cuts.
The man still refused to fall. "Avada Kedavra!" he screamed with fury.
"Aura." James called upon his divine artifact, and the next instant his body became enveloped by golden robes that emitted a saintly light.
Much to Lestrange's shock, James used the back of his hand to slap the curse away.
Only the golden fabric came into direct contact with the Death Curse, shielding James from any harm.
Of course James already knew this was possible, as he had meticulously tested the capabilities of the robes with the help of Nyxaris and Bella.
"Impossible!" Edwin could not believe what he was seeing. Nothing could stop the Killing Curse in such a way. From his perspective, what James had done couldn't be described any other way.
Edwin then saw that James was no longer looking at him, but at something beyond the point where he was standing.
His head turned slightly and he caught something from the corner of his eye.
The next thing he knew, he had lost control of his body and was in a tremendous amount of pain.
Edwin understood that he had been hit by some spell as his body fell.
From the other side of the hallway, Pollux Black was standing with his wand in hand, pointing directly at Lord Lestrange.
Without uttering a single word to the man, Pollux fired another spell, a nasty organ-dissolving curse that ended Edwin Lestrange's life in a few painful seconds.
And just like that, the Lestrange bloodline, an ancient wizarding family that had been around for almost a millennium, came to an end.
