Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Ranks

"My lord." The spy said with his head lowered in a sign of servitude, but with a clear tone of confidence and pride with his work I'm the job he was trained for. " we have already began observing him and investigating to find the other target, either through him or keeping tabs on the her." The spy reported to his master, waiting for any reaction.

Getting no response though he just continues. "I have personally interacted with one of the main target of investigation myself, my lord. And that's how I found out about the sheer amount of potential he holds. His immense talent aside, also what his relatives seem to ignore is the darkness that resides inside of him. Ive seen it…. The look he gives to anyone besides his family, like he can stare right through to your soul, and if he doesn't like what he saw….. I suggest we find a way to take him out of the picture first as he will be a hinderance when he grows up, he is exteamly dangerous after all… or he will be."

The spy ends his report shaking as he remembers his encounter with a child and how the amount of maddness and insanity he saw hidden behind those cold and hollow eyes.

To this report, the nobleman slams his fists onto the table in a fit of anger showing no appreciation for the work of his subordinates. Not only does he smash the table, he continues to actively destroy everything In sight while having what can only be compared to a child's temper tantrum.

"NOOOOO!!! NO NO NO NO! I don't give a shit about some snot nosed mud-blooded brat ! I want to know where he came from and who fuc—."

Midway through his meltdown the nobleman suddenly stops and controls his emotions in a way that displays an unatural and sudden calm, letting out a deep, tired sigh of exhaustion.

"No, you are right." He admits his mistakes with a hand covering his face. "I will take you advice into mind and will base my plan to include getting rid of him… yes that will work out well actually. Well done, keep up the good work."

The spy is shocked by the praise from his master, and a smile eventually worms it's way onto previously sad face, his expression now in happy blissful state as he shakes in excitement.

"Yes!! Thank you my lord, I will promptly get my team on overtime to find who is behind it and follow your orders faithfully."

Saying this, the spy's figure starts to disappear into seemingly know where at all, like a phantom….

[Back at the manor]

Once again I am back in the library ingrossed In books related to this worlds power system and its unique quirks.

Though it's quite similar to a classic system in novels and games, there is a lot that separates and differentiates this world and fantasy.

But this time I'm looks through magic and combat arts. Specifically the spells, techniques and the parts of it that informs me of how they work with their classifications on both sides of their systems.

To start with, spells and techniques follow the same progression system or an order that follows that same path. From the lowest progression to the highest is as follows;

novice->

experienced->

adept->

expert->

master->

grandmaster.

Although, even by progressing along this path and the qualitive changes it can bring by completely mastering the spell/technique, a master will not always be superior to those of a lower ranking. For example, the master in question could have only mastered the single spell while his opponent has hundreds of spells that can make up in quantity that they have in quality, or they could be physically or have better mana control and strength. To summarise what that really means is that you shouldn't always judge the ranking of a lower or high progressions of their proficientcy.

Another thing that was briefly mentioned previously is the benefits ranking up can bring to an individual. The first three ranks barely show any difference in how they operate with only being more mana efficient and effective, but when the individual is able to is about to become an expert, they can fuse their understanding of it to branch out into another direction and make the spell unique.

An example of the would be a water ball spell. The spell works by gathering water mana into a sphere and launching it away from them. A low-level spell that is easily used even without learning it, back to the point, once the water ball user reaches expert in their proficiency everything they learned and understood becomes a catalyst that creates a new effect or change to the spell. This change can be as simple as changing the colour, shape and even flavour or it can be unique and change that waters properties to create a boiling water all or a frozen ball of ice, it can go on and on but I think I get it.

A master is also a bigger change in the overall quality of the spell. An expert can have only one affect from the previous listed of their understanding, but a master can have multiple depending on wether they really understand and is able to reach the ranking altogether.

Moving on…

Not much is said about the topic of grandmasters and the effect that teaching that proficiency entails but I carry on reading, absorbing all the knowledge I can from the limited information. It is said when a grandmaster of a technique or spell is born… that's when it completely changes the game entirely. When the master overcomes the nigh impossible hurdle of the master rank and reaches the next level, becoming a grand master, instead of just the spell or technique going through a qualitive change, both the master and spell changes entirely.

That's all is stated though and I couldn't find anything on what kind of qualitive change they under go or even what that means. I believe this can mean that the information on this level is being suppressed, perhaps even erased by people with higher influence and strengths due to them not wanting others to reach it. Or it could just be that it really is an impossible task that no one can accomplish. I'm leaning more towards the former though.

Seeing as there isn't anything else I can learn from this top I decide once more to leaving the information gathering of this task to the future me and move onto the next part.

Like the progression system the Spells and techniques to are split into six ranks in their creation. The ranks they fit into is noted in the following;

copper->

silver->

gold->

platinum->

palladium->

Rhodium

All of the ranks follow the same process when being created and used at the beginning. In essence it just being using mana in a certain way and pattern and willing the effects into existence.

For example with techniques at the copper rank, you could just use the mana in your body ,Chanelling the mana in a large amount to enhance your legs, abdominal core and lower back while also using your will to create an effect that is in this example a burst of instant speed.

Another was would be even using smaller amounts of mana to enhance your speed with a longer lasting and constant buff to the aspect with slower speeds.

As for spells, at the copper rank it's would be a magician using the fire element to create a super condensed ball of fire for an explosive effect in destruction that detonates on impact with a target.

Or to use the fire element to create a stream of fire that will constantly burn anything and everything it's directed at and touches, a flamethrower essentially with no explosive power but for less mana and a quicker casting time.

These effects will get stronger and cost less mana as one climbs through the progression ranks with experience and usage.

Using the previous example with how the effects will be strengthen is; the burst of instant speed that sends you across a small distances in merely a few steps, become a technique that allows you to cross large distances in a single step.

The explosive ball of fire that is the size of a basketball and explosive power to destroy tree and create small craters becomes a nuke that can wipe entire villages of the map instantly (only at high).

And these can be done at low levels with controlling purely mana.

At higher levels that is not enough, for spells you would need to create or learn magic circles. A magic circle is a formula filled with a language commonly referred to as mana script, and creating it in a certain pattern to create the case and effect. This both strengthens the spell while also making the spell more expensive in mana and difficult to lean and master, though requiring less focus to maintain once the magic circle is created. Also a chant is more often than not required by speaking the same language used in the magic circle for the activation and stability of the spell.

A similar process is followed with techniques.

Using the body as a vessel instead of creating a external construct by forming strings of text using mana script that travels with the mana along side the blood vessels and veins with hand signs as their 'activation' keys. These also require chants in mana script for activation alongside the hand signs though with less words, usually no more than one or two words.

Though when you reach a higher progression in the spells and techniques, magic circle/ and chants become less necessary and more of a boster and to get a more smooth and precise control, hand signs also becoming simplified and even less necessary.

Finally finishing that we move onto the third and final top.

Mana script. It is a type of language referred to in mana other names in different cultures. With some it's the voice of the world others it's language of the ancients even the text of the gods, but it is widely referenced as mana script universally by mages and warriors.

What it can do is essentially coding a line of text using mana and letting the world know by speaking the code out loud while expecting it to obey.

Haaaah. That was tiring. Even though I was once and avid reader once upon a time, there is a different in reading for pleasure and reading for business or education, I have to admit it was kind of fun in the end and I was was getting very into though.

And so that's really all there is to it that i can find at the moment though, so I will put down the books and get back to training…. For now!
