Chapter 168 - Researcher wells

Ben laid out the final details. "Here's my plan. First, Bret and Adreil will snag the guards outside and wear their uniforms. Then, Luc will go to where Princess Selene's people are kept and free them. Meanwhile, Bret, you'll go after your super-soldier project, and Adreil will create a commotion, like starting a fire. But before all that, we need your cooperation, Princess Selene. Tell us the layout of the castle and where the super-soldier project and your people are kept."

Princess Selene nodded. "Okay. The research department is on the 3rd floor. The super-soldier project is still in Phase 1 of development. I don't know where the serum and blueprints are located. As for my people, they are in the underground prison. Getting them out might be tough because the people down there are sensitive to magic."

"But if Luc can turn invisible, why doesn't he just go to the higher-ups and..." Adreil made a throat-cutting gesture.

"It's not that easy," Ben said. "There are magic sensors all over. The only reason we made it through was because of that." Ben pointed up at the high ceiling, where a cloud of red dust was visible.

"What the heck is that?" Bret asked.

"Powder of magic gem," Ben explained. "You can also call it magic-absorbing or magic-sensing powder. Enough of that. Go away and do your thing."

Bret and Adreil waited by the door. Selene called out, "Guards, come in! I need something."

Two guards entered. They saw Selene sitting with Ben and Luc nearby. "What's the meaning of this?" one guard asked. Before he could react, he lost consciousness from a chop to the neck from Bret. Before the other guard could turn around, Adreil's sword pierced his chest.

"What you need is rest," Adreil said from behind him, pulling out his sword as the man dropped.

Everyone looked at Adreil. "Don't worry," he said. "I didn't kill the man; he's just unconscious." Adreil and Bret quickly put on the guards' armor.

Luc became invisible. "Okay, we're going," he said.

"Show them what a revolutionary is known for, Luc," Ben said. "Let the revolution begin!" With that, the door opened, and everyone went their separate ways.

Ben settled back down. "Now that they're gone, let's start talking real business... about my sister, of course."

Selene made an annoyed face. "I would really like to kill her."

"Killing is a strong word," Ben corrected. "You should use the word 'banishing.'"

Meanwhile, Luc, with no one to look after, easily covered the distance with his speed and soon reached the lowest floor near the underground door. "There are people that can sense my magic," he thought. "I can't go in recklessly. However, there's no other choice. If I don't use magic, they'll see me, and if I use magic, they'll sense me. There is no other option."

Luc went inside slowly. As the guards saw him, they tried to activate the magic sensor, but Luc had already covered the sensor with his magic powder. He immediately lunged with his sword, but the two guards were strong. One guard locked his sword with Luc's to stop him. Luc took out his magic gun and used it, piercing the guard's stomach. As the guard fell, the second guard, who was attacking Luc from behind, was surprised. Luc took this chance to slash him with his sword. Luc then went to the massive door, opened it, and saw the prison.

Meanwhile, Adreil went to the north side of the castle, took a nearby torch, and threw it onto a curtain, starting a fire. One of the guards ran in. "Hey, guard, aren't you watching that there is a fire?" he yelled. The guard quickly ran toward the fire, but before he could get near, Adreil called out, "Sword Saint Style, 1st Form, 1st Verse," and with a single slash, he killed the guard.

Soon, other guards came near. "Now this is my version of playtime," Adreil said.

"He is a traitor!" one of the guards shouted. They drew their swords and attacked, but Adreil used his sword, cutting everyone. "I'm not going to hold back since I'm fighting for my life!" Adreil started killing everyone who got close to him. The guards were numerous, and Adreil took some slashes, but his power of ignoring attacks made him a beast. Adreil made a maniacal face and charged the guards, ignoring their cuts and killing them all. "Let me show you what I am made of!" Adreil roared.

Meanwhile, Bret quickly entered the 3rd floor and opened the door of the research and development section. He saw what seemed to be otherworldly tests on humans, the makings of artificial corpses, and much more.

A man working there said, "I thought something was coming, after all. My godly things could not be just contained here. By the way, I am Researcher Wells. Nice to meet you."

"I see, so you are the mastermind behind this," Bret said.

"You guessed right," Wells replied. "Though you might be unable to discern what these are, let me explain."

Bret interrupted. "Oh, I can clearly see what these are. Human experimentation, creating artificial flesh. Seems like you are creating some kind of monster, a very big monster." The things Bret immediately discerned were things others might not have understood, but he had a very good education from Rei's notes in Orville.

"Never thought someone except for me could even understand these things," Wells said. "Are you another researcher, by the way?"

"No, I'm just another foot soldier. It's just that my education is good," Bret said. He walked up to the researcher and put his sword to Wells's neck. "By the way, I don't want this idle chat. Give me the serum for the super-soldier project and all your other blueprints, now." Wells put his hands up in surrender.

"Sure, what's the rush?" Wells said while smiling. "The blueprints are in the desk drawer, whereas the serum is on top of the desk."

As Bret went to gather the serum and the blueprints, Wells said, "The serum is not complete, and even if you take those blueprints, you won't be able to make it or complete it because there is no one smart enough to understand them but me."

"I know plenty of people who are smarter than you," Bret countered. After taking the serum and blueprints, Bret went away. Wells sat on the couch. "Sure, you might have seen them, but I am the smartest of all of them. But since he seemed so confident, I should search for these so-called people, and my blueprints might just help me locate them."

In the tower, Emilia saw the smoke coming from the castle and instantly understood what was going on. She thought, "This was going to be a covert mission, then why the heck is there smoke coming from the castle, ugh, whatever." She then got up and went towards Midgard.
