I watched her from the other side of the burial ground, just beyond the curve of the hedge where no one would notice me.

Not that I cared about being seen.

My eyes hadn't left her since I got there.

She stood beneath the gray sky like a ghost, still, quiet, removed from everything. Olivia was crying beside her, and Sylas… Sylas was standing too damn close.

His hand brushed hers. His lips touched her temple. Like he belonged there.

And Aria didn't push him away.

She just stood there. Numb.

But then...

Her body shifted.

Head turning just slightly.

Her eyes scanned the crowd slowly, searching.

I leaned forward without realizing it, heart in my throat.

Was she looking for me?

Did she feel it? The way I was burning holes into her with my gaze? The way I wanted to walk up and hold her the way I did when her mother died, whisper into her ear that everything would be okay, even if it wasn't?

But no.
