Chapter 110: Library of Alexandria
Bolton Lands
POV of Domeric Bolton
Domeric sat under the shadow of a large weirwood tree and leaned his head against the tree. He was thinking about the Valyrian physique enhancement ritual.
He was trying to change a lot of parts of the ritual, and it was making things complicated. He has already improved its efficiency and has reduced the number of necessary sacrifices. However, it was more difficult to change human sacrifices to animal sacrifices and make adjustments to the features to be developed.
After all, he didn't want to just improve his strength and speed but also his senses, his mind, his reflexes, his eyesight, etc.
But making too many adjustments was hard and its results were unpredictable. So, he had to conduct some experiments on animals after every adjustment he made to the ritual. And new arrangements had to be made regarding the results of the experiments.
He's currently stuck in this cycle. And progress was not developing at the pace he wanted. Normally he wouldn't be in a hurry to complete this ritual. But he had a White Walker problem to solve, and he needed to go to the True North again for that.
But this time he had an uneasy feeling about going to the True North. This feeling saved his life more than once when he was head auror. He knew he had to be strong before he faced the White Walkers, not just magically but also physically.
He didn't like this feeling. He always thought he could solve any problem in this world one way or another if he used his magical powers. But his gut feeling was saying the exact opposite, and he wasn't going to let his instincts, which had saved his life so many times before, go to waste, no matter how much he didn't like it.
So he had to speed up his ritual adjustment research but he knew the trial and error method always takes time. Right now, he really wished he had received a reward for the magical ritual knowledge from the Symbol of the Deathly Hallows.
Alas, he knew that he couldn't get what he wanted from it. It was random. Sometimes he would get some very useful things and sometimes not. At least he got Dobby last time and he was very grateful for that.
His old friend was in his secret hideout and helping him with preparations for the next experiments. With Dobby around, everything was easier.
The only problem with Dobby was that he couldn't be seen by other people. At least for now. He knew well how people feared what they did not know and did not understand. After all, there was a reason why the magical folk lived in hiding from normal people.
Of course, Domeric introduced him to her aunt and the people in his inner circle, but his old friend was more eager to help him with the work in his secret hideout.
After thinking for a while, he lowered his head and looked at the huge construction site in front of him.
The library that he had dreamed of for so long was finally being under construction again.
It has taken a long time for this to happen. In fact, if it had been up to him then he would have continued its construction years ago.
As it was, the decision had indeed been up to him, but he had prioritized the construction of roads, mines, shipyards, houses, and walls instead of the library.
But now that he had more workers on his hands, it was finally time to continue working on the building that he had designed four years ago.
Four years… How fast the time flies by when you're so busy.
He was once again reminded that he had been in this world for almost 7-8 years. There were days when he would wake up and still be surprised that this was all real. That he had died but instead of leaving for the afterlife, he came to this world instead.
He was brought out of his musings when he heard footsteps coming from behind him.
He saw the 50 guards surrounding him move apart to allow the Head of the Infrastructure and Roads as well as the men working under him to come to him.
"My lord." Brandon Snow, a man old enough to be his grandfather and the Head of the Infrastructure and Roads said and gave him a bow, the other men behind him following his lead and bowing to him.
"Brandon." He said with a nod. "It seems like the reconstruction of the Library of Alexandria is off to an excellent start."
"It has my lord. The steel and concrete foundations are mostly completed, and we'll move on to the construction of the pillars after this." Brandon replied in an enthusiastic manner despite his old age. Well… not that old considering that he was only 50. But still, that man tended to become giddy like a child whenever he was handed a big project like this.
"Good. Tell me, Brandon. Do you think that the library's construction will finish before the 2 years' time I've given you?"
"It should, my lord. If no complications occur, then the work should be finished even before the estimated 2 years. But even if some complications occur, the construction should still finish in 3 years."
He stayed silent for a moment as he gazed at Brandon before he stood up and looked at the men behind Brandon. Each of them shuffled nervously as his eyes met theirs before he finally nodded and turned to Brandon once again.
"I'll not be able to oversee this project as much as I did for the others." He told the man in a soft voice. "I trust that you'll continue the work and not slack off in my absence."
Brandon for his part looked indignant. "Never my lord. I'll all my life and soul in this and see the library completed to your expectations."
He stayed silent for a moment, looking at Brandon's eyes and reading his intent. The man believed everything he said and was truly dedicated to this project.
"Good." He said softly "You're dismissed."
Brandon nodded and bowed to him, his subordinates following the bow before they left the area.
