I thought that she had overdosed and was dead; that's why Jude was clinging to her with that glazed-out look, appearing not to feel the pain of a busted head, lip, and swollen face. He didn't look like he knew what was going on around him, only that he was supposed to keep her safe and hold onto her.
It fucking hurt, and it made me flash with such jealousy that my mouth turned bitter. He cares about her because even in his delirious state, where nothing matters and no one can reach him in that deep place he has buried himself in, she somehow can hold meaning to him.
Zein slides back to the passenger seat, eyes flickering to the boy asleep on the back seat, head on my lap.
