Emperor Shun sat aloft on the throne, looking down at the spirited youth standing in the hall and spoke indifferently, "Dayu. Why do you not kneel upon seeing Us?"
The youth in the hall was indeed Dayu. With his thick eyebrows and large eyes and a pair of eyes clear as morning dew, transparent and pure. With his prominent nose and thin lips, and a tall and straight figure, he radiated a sunny aura.
Dayu looked up at Emperor Shun and said in a clear voice, "My master once told me that as an ascetic outside of worldly affairs, worshiping Heaven and Earth and bowing to close relatives and my master is naturally proper. However, an Emperor is not entitled to receive a bow from a poor Daoist!"
"How audacious!"
"How insolent!"
As soon as Dayu's voice fell, Emperor Shun had yet to speak up when the courtiers in the hall exploded in anger, one after another scolding Dayu for his impropriety and disrespect towards the monarch.
