With the completion of the new road network connecting Maya Village to the broader empire and the nearby kingdoms, the settlement finally had the infrastructure necessary to enact a project that had been years in the making: establishing formal trade partnerships with neighboring territories and distant markets.

The village's first and most obvious trade partner was the empire itself, which had invested heavily in Maya's development and held first rights to many of the rare materials that came out of the Great Forest. Beyond the imperial markets, Maya had maintained its longest-standing relationship with Gremory City, where the village's soap products and Michelle's embroidery had already established a reputation for their quality. Most recently, the village had formalized an alliance with the Millhaven territory, opening yet another avenue for trade and mutual benefit.

The empire's market network stretched across all three subcontinents, but for practical reasons Maya would focus its initial efforts on the central subcontinent of Arkanus. The village had secured the necessary permits to trade directly with imperial cities, towns, and villages, bypassing much of the usual bureaucratic scrutiny that smaller settlements typically faced. The goods would still be inspected at checkpoints, as was standard practice throughout the empire, but Maya's merchants would not face the additional delays and fees that unlicensed traders often encountered.

Maya's Traveling Mercantile, the commercial arm of the village's economy, would handle all trade operations. The enterprise had already proven itself through years of soap, beast premium meat, the deluxe hides and leather, and the rare herbs sales in Gremory. And now they would expand it to other settlements that they would trade to include in these deals would be the rare medicinal herbs, preserved beast meat, and treated hides. The truly valuable materials—bones, organs, and specialized reagents from the forest's more dangerous inhabitants—remained subject to the empire's first rights agreement, but there was still plenty of commerce to be conducted with what remained.

The village already have two large wagons for long-distance trade and four medium wagons for regional commerce. Each wagon was a masterpiece of engineering and magical craftsmanship, built to survive the harsh conditions of frontier travel while carrying valuable cargo across hundreds of kilometers of uncertain terrain.

The two large wagons bore names with deep personal significance. The first was Gremir's Adrianne, named after Master Craftsman Gremir of Gremory City and his daughter Adrianne. The second was Finn Amaryllia, named in memory of August's departed mother and sister, a tribute to the family he had lost in the massacre years ago.

Both wagons were identical in specification, massive structures that pushed the boundaries of what could reasonably be transported over roads that were often little more than packed earth and gravel.

The dimensions alone were staggering: seventy-seven feet in length, fifteen feet in width, and fifteen feet in height, creating a total volume of over fifteen thousand cubic feet. Pulling these massive structures required beasts of extraordinary strength and endurance. The village had acquired Four-Horned Tamaras, massive creatures that stood twelve feet tall at the shoulder and could each pull twenty-five tons. The four medium wagons they had before weren't built to similar standards, so they had to retrofit three out of the four wagons it was primarily going to be jsed for regional trade routes. Each measured forty feet in length, fifteen feet in width, and fifteen feet in height, with a maximum capacity of twenty tons including cargo, passengers, and the wagon's own weight.

The living quarters occupied fifteen feet of the wagon's length, providing two thousand seven hundred cubic feet of accommodation divided into separate male and female sections. Eight bunk beds were arranged for optimal space utilization and privacy, and the area was engineered to provide protection against temperature extremes. Access was through a secure door at the wagon's rear.

The cargo space occupied the remaining twenty-five feet of length, totaling five thousand six hundred and twenty-five cubic feet. The sides were detachable for easy loading and unloading, and two service doors on opposite sides provided convenient access during stops.

Each large wagon carried eleven primary personnel: a Wagon Master who led the entire operation, an Assistant Wagon Master who served as second-in-command, a financial accountant who tracked earnings and losses, two wagon drivers designated as Helms Master and Sub-Helms Master, three craftsmen including a Wainwright Master and two assistants specialized in wagon maintenance and wheel repair, six cargo handlers responsible for loading and unloading goods, a medic trained to handle injuries and ailments that might occur on the road, and a beast handler who cared for the Tamaras.

The remaining nineteen bunks in each large wagon's living quarters could accommodate passengers traveling partway to other destinations or potential recruits who the Wagon Master would find fitting for the village though they would have to pass a preliminary vetting process, before they were going to be brought back to Maya Village.

The military escort for each large wagon consisted of fifteen soldiers divided into two teams under the command of a squad commander and two vice commanders. These units were newly established groups under the Eagles Veil, Maya Village's primary military force. They were named in honor of the wagons they protected: the Adrianne Escort Squad and the Amaryllia Escort Squad.

The teams alternated positions during each journey. On the outbound leg, the first team served as vanguard while the second team guarded the rear and flanks. On the return journey, the roles reversed. This rotation ensured that all soldiers gained experience in both scouting ahead and defending against pursuit.

The medium wagons operated with smaller crews: a Wagon Master, a financial accountant, a single driver, one cartwright for maintenance, a medic, and three cargo handlers. The guard contingent consisted of eleven soldiers with a similar command structure of one escort commander, two vice commanders, and their men.

Today marked the formal beginning of Maya Village's expanded trade operations. Despite the snow that still blanketed much of the landscape, the wagons were built to handle such conditions, and the crews were eager to prove themselves.

August stood at the village's northern gate and watched as the large wagon Amaryllia prepared to depart on its trading voyage. The wagon was loaded with soap, preserved meats, treated hides, and carefully bundled medicinal herbs—goods that would fetch fair prices in Gremory and establish Maya's reputation as a reliable trading partner.

The Four-Horned Tamaras stamped their massive hooves impatiently, their breath steaming in the cold air. The Wagon Master called final instructions to the crew. The guards took their positions, half moving ahead to scout the road while the other half formed up around the wagon itself.

Angeline stood beside August, her hand resting lightly on his arm. "They will do well," she said quietly. "We have prepared them as thoroughly as we could."

August nodded. "I know. But the road is dangerous, and this is new for all of them."

"Everything was new once," Angeline reminded him. "The village itself was fairly new. The alliance with the beasts was new. We have learned and they too will learn."

The Wagon Master raised his hand in salute. August returned it, and the convoy began to move, the great wheels crunching through the snow as the Tamaras leaned into their harnesses and the Finn Amaryllia rolled forward toward the forest's edge and the road beyond.

It was just the beginning. And like all beginnings, it carried both hope and uncertainty in equal measure.
