— The Village Without a Name
The old elf's name was Thalion.
He led Varian through the village in silence, past stone houses where curtains moved as she walked by. Eyes watched her from every window. Children stopped playing to stare. A woman hanging laundry on a root-bridge froze mid-motion, cloth dripping onto the rocks below.
They knew. All of them. They looked at her the way people look at something they've been told about their entire lives but never expected to see.
Thalion brought her to a building carved directly into the cliff face. No door — just an archway framed by living vines that parted as he approached. Inside, the air was cool and smelled like wet stone and something older. Something sweet, like sap from a tree that no longer existed.
A circular room. Low ceiling. Walls covered in carvings — not decorative. Records. Thousands of years of history etched into rock with the patience of people who had nothing but time.
"Sit," Thalion said.
