Curious glances continued to follow Adam as he walked peacefully through the streets. Not only his foreign appearance but primarily his unnatural beauty were the cause of it.
However, being accustomed to this, he merely shrugged and continued on his way. The idea of using a spell to mask his beauty crossed his mind, something he mentally scheduled to practice later.
Walking beside him was a timid Saki, her shoulders slumped as she seemed uncomfortable with the attention they were receiving. Withdrawn, she looked as if she wanted to disappear.
"Sorry about this. It seems like people have never seen a foreigner before…" He apologized, noticing from the corner of his eye how the girl's body trembled the moment he spoke.
"N-No, don't worry about it…" She responded shyly, so softly it almost came out as a whisper. The tips of her fingers touched each other, an unconscious gesture due to her nervousness. "I just… I'm not used to getting so much attention."
"That's normal." He smiled, slightly charmed by the awkward demeanor of this cute girl. "It's nothing to feel down about."
She seemed to relax a bit at his words, but nervousness still dominated her mind. After all, standing beside her was the person she had been gathering the courage to talk to for days. It wasn't easy for Saki, who couldn't even accept her classmates' invitations, to feel comfortable around him… A man so handsome.
In a subtle attempt to disguise it, she stole a glance at Adam's face, her own face turning as red as a tomato before she quickly refocused on the path ahead.
Adam noticed but chose to feign ignorance to avoid embarrassing the girl further.
"So, Saki…"
He began, and as soon as her name left his lips, Saki felt a shiver run through her body, causing her to almost trip over her own feet. Adam watched in amusement, a small smile playing on his lips.
'How peculiar, it's the first time I've met someone so anxious and shy,' he thought, standing beside her as he waited for her to regain her composure.
"May I ask why you've been spying on me these past few days?" He was straightforward, but paired with his friendly tone and warm smile, the question held no malice—only genuine curiosity.
"S-Spying?!" Saki, startled by the word, immediately waved her hands frantically in front of her face, terrified that her actions might have offended Adam. "I-I…"
As she grew increasingly flustered, tears forming at the corners of her eyes, Adam realized his mistake. He gently placed a hand on her shoulder to comfort her.
"Hey, hey, I'm not mad about it. I was just curious. There's no way I could be upset about something like that, especially coming from a cute girl like you."
"!" Saki's eyes widened, the tears at the corners of her eyes vanishing as her face lit up, cheeks turning a bright shade of red that spread across her skin. "C-Cute? You think I'm… cute?"
Cute. That was a word Saki never imagined she'd hear directed at her. The realization caught her off guard, making her flush entirely as she shrank her shoulders.
Could someone as charming as this man really find her, a recluse, cute? In Saki's mind, that seemed impossible! Like the plot of a cliché visual novel she was so accustomed to playing!
"Of course." Adam confirmed simply, giving her a warm smile as he gently brushed away a few strands of hair that had fallen across her forehead. "Has no one ever told you that before?"
'No!' she almost shouted in her mind, her face glowing as she clasped her hands together in embarrassment.
"So… can I get an answer to my earlier question?"
"O-Oh…" Saki, remembering the question, felt her nervousness return. Her lips tightened as she swallowed hard, her hands trembling as she seemed to struggle with how to respond.
Adam waited patiently in silence. He knew pressuring her wasn't the best approach, but he wanted to resolve this quickly. The last thing he wanted was for Saki to fall into her dark fate sooner, given that this world was no longer mere fiction.
The sooner he could help her overcome her self-esteem issues, the sooner she could live the life of a normal girl who wouldn't cling to the first guy who paid her a compliment…
'Hypocrisy…' he thought ironically, considering that his plan was essentially to make her cling to him. But at least he didn't want to use her body, so he was miles away from being like someone like Hayato…
Hayato… Watching Saki's innocent and embarrassed demeanor in front of him, Adam felt a strong urge to find Hayato and demonstrate some medieval torture techniques…
But he decided to leave the guy alone. After all, in this world, Hayato hadn't done anything to Saki… At least as long as their paths didn't cross, Hayato would be safe.
"I…" Adam snapped out of his thoughts as Saki finally spoke, her voice trembling.
He noticed she was once again fidgeting with her fingers, her gaze unsteady as she hesitated to continue.
"I… I wanted to ask if…" She hesitated again, but after taking a moment to squeeze her eyes shut, she reopened them with renewed determination. "I wanted to ask if you would be my friend!"
"..."
Silence hung between them, only the footsteps of passing pedestrians echoing as Saki, eyes shut tight, began to sweat nervously, terrified that she had ruined everything. 'Idiot! Idiot! Idiot! H-He would never want to be friends with someone like me!'
"...Pfft!" But going against her expectations, Adam let out a small laugh, taken by surprise at how much courage the girl had to gather just to ask a question like that. Saki opened her eyes, crestfallen. "Sorry, sorry, I'm not making fun of you. I was just caught off guard."
His playful expression quickly softened into a friendly smile, his eyes warm as he spoke gently. "Alright, alright."
"Of course, I'd like to be your friend, Saki."
"..."
"…!"
Saki's eyes widened, her face lighting up as her lips curled into a big smile, her heart threatening to burst from the rapid beating in her chest.
A friend!
She had made a friend!
"Thank you!" Unable to contain her happiness, tears streamed down her face. "Thank you so much for becoming friends with someone like me!"
With her joyous expression and tears of gratitude glistening on her cheeks, Saki looked even cuter, making Adam nod in satisfaction to himself.
He had previously wondered if he should even interfere in Saki's life, but now, seeing her smile so brightly and gratefully, he got his answer…
He did the right thing.
. . .
After giving Saki a piece of paper with his home address—since he still didn't have a cell phone—he accompanied her to school, causing the students, especially the girls, to whisper among themselves upon seeing him bringing the most reclusive girl to the school.
Despite feeling embarrassed, Saki's earlier nervousness had diminished enough for her to say goodbye to him with a grateful smile. This drew a charmed sigh from him as he watched her quickly head toward the school.
Now, on his way back home after buying a simple cellphone, Adam also took the opportunity to do some grocery shopping, as he wanted to cook something special to celebrate completing his first objective in this world...
Of course, there was still work to be done with Saki, but now, he had no doubt that he had changed her tragic fate.
That alone was a reason to celebrate!
"MmmMmmMmM"
Humming a tune as he walked down the street toward his house, Adam carried a few shopping bags, his eyes wandering around, noticing the sparse movement of people.
With the sun almost setting, he realized he had taken much longer on his shopping trip than expected. But after buying some decent clothes, food, and a new cellphone, it didn't seem so unreasonable… especially considering he had walked the entire way.
"I still need to fix this sense of time…" he murmured, his eyes landing on his house as he finally arrived, his expression becoming slightly dejected as he once again noticed the cracks on the walls. "And I also need to renovate this house… Or buy a new one."
With a tired sigh, he walked to the entrance, deciding that he could think about everything after dinner, after all, he had an eternity ahead of him...
Entering his house, Adam took a deep breath, satisfied with the scent of a meticulously clean home. He was surprised at how thoroughly he had eradicated every speck of dust that seemed to cover every corner of the place... It seemed that the "Cleaning" skill came with the "Millions of years alive" package.
He smiled, and placing the shopping bags on the kitchen table, he rolled up the sleeves of his hoodie, his hands coming together in gratitude, more out of habit from his past life as a soldier than anything else.
"Alright, let's get started." Moving to grab the vegetables first, he picked up a kitchen knife while holding a potato.
"..."
But as he grabbed a cutting board, his eyes narrowed when a strange odor hit his nose, his eyes blinking as he recognized the familiar scent, his nose twitching.
"Is that… pigeon smell?" he said in recognition. "Oh…"
!
With his senses roaring at him to move, Adam ducked just in time to avoid a vibrating spear that pierced through the wall like butter, his eyes narrowing as he rolled to avoid another spear that went through the counter.
"Huh…" he said as he stood up and turned to face his attacker, an irritated smile spreading across his lips. "Aren't I lucky?"
Two large black wings unfurled from his attacker's back. His attire was peculiar—a gray coat covering his entire body while a felt hat obscured half of his face, revealing only his lips curled into an amused grin.
A spear glowing with bluish light was in his hands, emitting energy that Adam recognized all too well.
'Holy power.' Adam didn't show any surprise, his grip tightening on the kitchen knife as he kept his attention on his enemy. 'It's been a while since I've seen someone using that.'
"Oh… When Raynare said she found someone with peculiar energy, I was quite skeptical, but now, I understand what she meant." The fallen angel spoke in a mocking tone, his head lifting to reveal dangerous blue eyes. "Allow me to introduce myself, after all, not many can dodge my spear…"
The fallen angel bowed, removing his hat in a respectful gesture, only serving to make Adam frown. "My name is Dohnaseek…"
A hostile aura exploded from the fallen angel, feathers from his wings scattering across the room, making the atmosphere even tenser. "And I'm here to kill you."
But this had no effect on Adam, who only felt irritated seeing his living room dirtied by the filthy feathers of this guy. 'Son of a bitch.'
"But first, I'd like to know who you are." Dohnaseek asked with genuine curiosity, his eyes wandering over Adam's body, intrigued by the strange energy pulsing from him. "A worshiper of Greek gods, perhaps? Or a mage? Odd, I don't see any trace of magic in you."
Adam observed the fallen angel for a moment before letting out a long sigh, raising the knife in his hand, pointing its tip toward his enemy. "That doesn't matter, after all, you're here to kill me, aren't you?"
"..."
Dohnaseek's eyes narrowed, and with a disappointed shake of his head, he adjusted the hat on his head. "If that's how you want things to be, then it's a pity—I won't waste any more time."
Raising the spear of light, the fallen angel's eyes shone with a murderous glint, his face void of emotion. "I'll grant you a quick death."
"..." Adam, standing confidently before his enemy, merely stared at the spear with an intrigued look, a knowing smile spreading across his lips. "Oh, so that's it…"
Boom!
