Chapter 55 - Chapter 52: Desperation

Dante was breathing heavy still trying to catch his breath. Dark red blood was still dripping from his exposed wrists. He thrusted his ebony katana into the ground to stabilize himself until he could steady his breathing.

"You bastard!" Malachi yelled in pain. "My hand! You blew off my fingers." Malachi was still looking horrified at his hand. He was in shock looking at his hand covered in blood. Malachi looked up at Dante with a look of murderous intent like never before.

Dante had seen that look time and time again. It was one of the prime indicators that he had managed to corner his prey. It was a glorious feeling but it also made him feel uneasy and tense. Dante knew this was when a person was in there most dangerous state. Most people assume that an animal is at there most fearsome when enraged. However Dante would argue desperation was the most dangerous state for an animal, because you never knew know what they are going to do.

"Screw it. Who would have thought that I the king of debauchery and a criminal who achieved a ranking in the 100 would be pushed to this point. I will admit I now understand why you are one of the most feared men in the underground society.

Malachi couldn't help himself and began laughing and spitting up blood.

Malachi wiped his blood stained mouth before taking a deep pained breath. He then ripped up what was left of his tattered blood stained shirt wrapping it around his hand. He created a makeshift tourniquet over the space where his fingers used to be.

Dante could finally feel his breath shorten and his racing heart slow. He felt sticky. His body drenched in sweat and his wrists were screaming in pain. He silently whispered. "Thank you." It was nothing short of a miracle that the rest of his body remained unscathed.

If it weren't for the midnight cloaks protection. His wrist would've been the least of his worries. He probably would've been a corpse already. Bellatrix did an excellent job. Dante silently thanked her for her protection. He could feel Bellatrix heat up in response to her masters praise and gratitude.

Chaos chimed in. "Master pay attention the fight is not yet finished. That man he just reached for something."

Dante looked up and much to his surprise Malachi was still standing and his demeanor changed from panicked to calm. He was clutching a small device in the palm of his hand. His thumb of his right hand hovered over what seemed to be the trigger. Dante's gut began to bubble sending a tingling sensation shooting up his spine.

"Fine.... I admit I have lost. But don't you think that you have won today. I am going to send you and your team and everyone in this god forsaken underground society to hell." Malachi said as his thumb hovered over the trigger.

Dante didn't need the glasses of truth to know what Malachi was planning to do. He must of hid explosives all through out the underground cavern. The device his thumb was hovering over was more than likely a trigger of some sort. Dante glanced over to his comrades the kids were fine while Alexander seemed to be keeping those multi colored freaks at bay. There was no way he was going to allow anyone of his teammates to die down here.

"So this is how the Chameleon of the red light district is going to die? I had no idea you were such a coward. Death is inevitable for a warrior. As warriors we are the only ones with the luxury to decide how we die. I just can't believe that you are capable of such cowardice in the face of a warriors most glorious moment."

Malachi took a small step forward his gaze filled with hate and desperation. "Do you have any idea. What I had planned for my life?" He paused looking up at the dimly lit fluorescent lights hanging in the subway terminal.

"I was supposed to be the king of red light district. I was going to reform the entire district eliminating servitude pacts. I was going to eliminate slavery truly once and for all. So that no one had to end up like my mother. She worked herself to the bone and just barely made enough to take care of me. Let alone save up to pay off her debt to be released. She worked as a hostess during the day and a joy doll during the night. She did this for for fifteen years. She was so close to gathering enough money to buy her freedom. Until my sixteenth birthday rolled around and she went to visit her wealthiest client. She was planning to earn enough to gain her freedom that night." Malachi was walking slowly towards Dante until he stood directly in front of the kneeling man.

"However fate had other plans. The man somehow found out my mother was close to earning her freedom. He had no intention of allowing it. He wasn't going to allow his favorite pleasure doll to escape his grasp. So he accused her of stealing from his precious jewel collection. There are no trials held for people who are bound by servitude pacts. She was automatically found guilty. Which earned her mountains of more debt as restitution. A few days later I went to go check on her. What I found was her wrists slit. She was barely clinging onto life when I arrived. I tried to get her to a clinic but it was to late. She spent her last few moments in the filthy shack we called home. Her last words to me was leave this cease pool and live a normal happy life."

Malachi was now towering overtop of Dante who was still trying to catch his breath. Dante was trying to think of a way to take the trigger from Malachi before he could press the button.

"That's tragic. Is there a point to this story?" Dante let out an exasperated sigh.

Dante's hand clenched the hilt of his katana. He was trying to build up enough strength to stand but he still needed a bit more time for his strength to return.

"Oh I'm just getting to the good part. I couldn't bury my mother because no one would allow a joy doll that was convicted of a crime into their cemetery. The pain of my existence almost became too much to bear. There was a point I wished I could just disappear and fade away. Which was around the same time that my bloodline trait manifested itself. When I realized that I had this new ability to disappear. I could finally become invisible and blend into this cruel world. I was filled with excitement but it was quickly replaced by an overwhelming sadness. If only I had awoken this ability earlier. I could have took on jobs and easily paid off my mother's pact."

Dante scoffed. "Yea I remember reading your file. Now get to the point of the story where you turned into a habitual serial killer."

Malachi let out another pained laugh. "Serial killer? Well in some aspects I guess your right. After I buried my mother at an unmarked grave site. I found her address book filled with her repeat customers. The first one I visited of course was the man who framed her in the first place. I used my newfound powers and abilities to sneak into his manor. My malnourished body had never felt so strong . I realized that my newly mutated body afforded me a new set of abilities. I was filled with the strength of ten men. I could easily snap a man's neck with my bare hands. So after some practice I was able to maintain my invisibility while in motion. I killed every guard inside the manor and slowly killed the man who framed my mother. I still remember the face he made as he begged for his life. As well as the one he made when he realized help nor mercy was coming. I then raided that man's underground vault and found Charlemagne."

"Then you systematically killed 108 people all through out the Red Light District." Dante spat. His gaze was as cold as stone.

Malachi threw his head back and closed his eyes. His thumb still hovering unsteadily over the trigger. "Yes I did kill all of those bastards who saw it fit to use my mother and throw her away like a child would a toy. You will never know pain until you see the person you love most in the world die right in front of you. The powerlessness of it all would make any man question his decisions. I know that you may be able to teleport out of here with that annoying relic. However this damp underground terminal will be your precious teammates grave. I will make you feel true despair! So you may understand half of my pain."

Malachi opened his eyes and looked down at Dante who was still griping his blade. Only Dante was no longer paying attention his head was dropped down to the ground. His long Cantù dreads hung down over his face completely covering his eyes. Even though he couldn't see them Malachi could tell his eyes were closed.

A wicked smile formed across Malachi's lips."Ha that's pathetic have you succumbed to your wounds already?"

Not even a moment later Dante looked up revealing the bold purple aura coating his body. Dante's aura had finally replenished itself after using consecutive Psuedo God techniques. In one swift movement Dante dislodged his blade from the ground startling Malachi causing him to stumble backward.

"True Despair huh? You talk to much..." Dante used the momentum he built from pulling his ebony black katana from the ground and fused it with all the aura he could muster. And in one movement he cut Malachi's arm clean off causing Malachi to scream in pain and reach for the arm that was no longer there.

"No it can't end like this mother I am sorry. Your son wasn't able to fulfill your wish. I know I won't be headed to where you are. They won't let me enter the gates..." But before Malachi could finish his sentence Dante switched the direction of his blade and dealt the final blow. Leaving Malachi's body with two large cuts in the shape of an X. He tried to take a step towards his severed arm before collapsing.

"I understand and accept your pain and hatred and now your suffering is finally over." Dante knelt down and closed Malachi's eyes.

Dante walked over and retrieved "Charlemagne" which had reverted back to its original state. Dante clicked on his watch and scanned the Relic causing the watch to beep with an update.

Chameleon (KIA) ---Relic: Charlemagne Retrieved!

A ray of light shot out from the watch and Charlemagne disappeared out of Dante's hand. The retrievial teams each carried around special F rank relics that are connected to an S rank relic called "safety deposit box".

The relic can duplicate itself into various items each with the capability to link itself back to its main body. It makes things a heck of a lot easier when it comes to carrying back any large items. The only downside is that the original body of the relic is tucked away in the archive section of Pandora's vault.

It also is not a two way system even though you can send nearly anything through the many duplicates of the Safety Deposit Box it does not allow you to pull anything out of it. Which means whatever is sent back to its main body has truly been transported to its location permanently.
