Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: Normalcy after abnormality

It was all so different to the little girl who only knew of carriages and small two story homes that was apart of her everyday life.

"What is that?" She pointed at the silver vehicle neatly parked beneath a convenient shade casted by a palm tree.

"It's a car." Misery giggled at Evelyn's curiosity.

Evelyn clutched the small black pup tightly from excitement.

"Can we go in it." She jumped.

"I wish I can drive." Misery sighed. "I do know someone who'd be happy to take us though." After pressing her earpiece and waiting for a minute, she spoke. "Hey busy today?... Well me and Evelyn are just going about sight seeing... You wanna come too?... Sure."

Ten minutes had passed and from it came two who had an identical look, except one was a boy and the other a girl.

"Thanks for coming, Alex." Misery turned to Andrew. "I thought you would be busy with another mission."

"I'm not leaving until Samuel gives me something else." Andrew frowned. His unpleasant gaze caught Evelyn. "And why the hell are we babysitting."

A crushing punch into his side from Alex calmed the sass coming from him.

"Don't worry about him." Alex smiled at Evelyn. "He's just shy around people."

Black curly fur had caught Alex attention, in Evelyn's arms was a jet black puppy. Intensity in it's tiny eyes was being perceived as adorable.

"And whose your friend?"

"We found him before coming back." Misery answered. "He got attached to Evelyn really fast."

"Can I pet him?"

"Don't you dare set those filthy hands upon my head."

Was what the little puppy wanted to say, but out of him came growls and barks that made everyone want to caress it even more.

"Little feisty one too." Alex began petting it. "What's his name?"

"It's Harry." Stated a proud Evelyn.

"How dare you treat me Cerberus like thi..."

His mind quieted as Alex hands slowly stroked his head.

"Whose a good boy." She smiled.

After losing his hell flame, Cerberus had shrunk in size and power. He saw the end of his queen and Brigaden, knowledge that life was going to be short had brought him despair.

He was lying in the rubble awaiting the end, when he was suddenly lifted up.

"You look so cold here." Evelyn tore a piece of her faded blue shirt and covered him. "I'm going to a new place, so I'm taking you with me. There isn't anywhere else we can stay anyway."

It took a short time for the attachment to grow onto the young girl and when it did, Cerberus took her as his new master.

Safety returned to the streets of New Port, all accounts of how fear had taken the people by the bizarre cult like murders were replaced by the peaceful air that had thought to be forgotten. Many walked the streets, with eyes of hope looking steadily at a brighter future.

"What a bizarre vehicle for transportation." Cerberus thought while sticking his head out of the window.

"This is so amazing!" Evelyn smiled.

Andrew looked in the rear view mirror.

"Hey girl." He called out.

"Evelyn." Misery chimed.

"Evelyn, I heard that most of Brigaden people can turn into werewolves." He grinned. "Can you do it too?"

A menacing glare came from Alex.

"Well... my sister never told me about her job she would just leave at night, but would always come back with money." Evelyn began. "We aren't really from Brigaden, we snuck onboard a ship transporting fighters and ended up there. She started to meet with Duke and we were getting food and money until he... he..."

"Don't worry." Misery placed a hand on Evelyn. "You'll be just fine with me."

"Yeah we'll spoil you rotten." Alex smiled.

"Thank you..." Evelyn held her tears back.

Brigaden wasn't a harsh place for an orphan the people gave her sympathy, but the way they praised her sister's killer was sickening. She would watch in the arena hoping in some way someone would kill him. Then she met Misery and Joshua forgetting about Duke and the previous home she's from. Her sister remained in the heart, Evelyn can never forget a grand sibling like her.

"Wait if your not from Brigaden, then where did you come from?" Andrew asked more politely.

"I... don't know my parents." Evelyn looked out of the window. "It was always me and my sister. When I would ask her, she would say it doesn't matter. Home is where we both were"

Cerberus started barking.

"There is that infernal boy who stole my hell flames!" The dog thought.

All passengers in the car turned their heads to see Chris walking beside an attractive young woman, her clothing was provocative, yet classy enough to give her a certain aesthetic. Black may have been her favorite color as she was adorned with it from the tight top that only covered her cleavage to the near upper knee skirt. The boots felt like an overkill as it was also matching the other fabrics she wore.

"Hot date." Andrew whistled. "I thought he was more of a nice girl kind of guy."

Everyone in the car intently watched as they went into a nice restaurant.

"So... Do we follow them?" Andrew gave a sly smirk.

"H...Hey we shouldn't just go looking into people's business." Alex tried shutting down the idea.

"Hold it." Andrew placed his two fingers to his temple.

"No way your gonna eavesdrop." Misery acted stunned. "What are they talking about?"

"What is he doing?" Evelyn asked Misery.

"Andrew and Alex are psychics." She replied. "Andrew can see and listen to people from a good distance."

"Woah! Really?!" Evelyn's eyes shone brightly. "What can you do, Alex?"

"Well..." Alex lifted a finger and Cerberus was in the air. "I can move things with my mind." She gave an embarrassed laugh.

"Wow!"

"Quiet guys." Andrew hushed them. "I'm getting some good details."

Chris' eyes wandered about Lora, not sure where to remain when her attention slipped.

"You sure can tempt a man." He leaned on the restaurant's table.

Lora's eyes rolled in delight.

"And you sure know how to keep a lady waiting." She returned. "I'm happy you got a nice job at the Greek Institute, but you don't text much when your there." Her body leaned closer making her bosom much more visible to the right and only audience member. "You know I'm not patient."

Lora had just moved into Chris' neighborhood when he first joined the Greek Institute, she was smart, straight forward but the most distinguishable trait that magnetized the young man's attention was her way with words. She spoke the first thing in her mind without any filter, that honesty was cupid's bow striking his heart. Now here they are on their first date and Lora was playing the right strings to keep him dancing in her palms.

"Your order?" A waiter came with a look of exhaustion either from his job or the lovey atmosphere these two gave.

"Oh! Sorry." Chris instantly apologized. "One glazed Salamander please."

The mouth watering image of the gelatinous mass coated in a smothering red sauce was sending his taste buds into a wet dream.

"Just the Tranquil Melon for me." Lora glanced at the tea known to bring a sense of inner peace, it is made from a famous fruit that resides in the Eastern Continent.

Once he wrote all of their orders, the waiter left them to continue their flirtatious conversation.

"So what do you do at the institute?" Lora asked. "You keep saying research and other things like that but I know your not the type to take notes of things."

"Aren't I taking note of you." Chris smiled.

"Your incorrigible." Lora giggled. "But who says I don't like that."

"These two need a room." Andrew groaned. "We should go, this is diabetes to my ears."

On the notion, Alex put the car in drive and continued the outting.

Notifications were piling on his phone, but once Joshua saw that his father was at fault for spamming him text after text of how unreasonable his actions were he threw the phone away.

"Once more." He told himself, he can maintain flight for thirty minutes until the pain was too much. He'd fall from a good height and injure himself, still his determination to gain strength and his repulsion of what was said to him before the first mission was driving him.

Before he officially joined, Joshua wanted to relay the news of his new job to his father. Foolishly, Joshua gave himself comfort that his old man would actually support him joining the Greek Institute. When the yelling started he began to regret that thought.

"Greek institute!" Joshua's Father shouted. "Your not going to law school just to study some relics of a past long gone?!"

"We saved up for your college already." His mother chimed in. "Don't throw away your future for such nonsense, just go back to school and forget such idiotic things."

He never really talked back to his parents, the authoritarian figures installed a fear in him that made his mind numb once their voices raised high enough to send the roof through the hemisphere.

"He wouldn't do such things himself." Joshua's Mother gave a look of disgust. "It was those young hooligans you call your friends, wasn't it?"

"Having you joined that public school was the worst thing we ever did." His father sighed.

"It was my idea." Joshua stated. "Don't go blaming them for every choice I mak..."

The sudden loud smack of his father slapping him echoed.

"You don't talk back to us." He spoke through gritted teeth. "To your room until we figure out how to deal with you."

This wasn't the first time he suffered like this, his father would always use force to scare him and his mother was just as bad taking his side. It was different this time however. He knew the risk of letting these people have their way. The world was going to see the rise of a power that will annihilate humanity as much as he wanted to tell them, he felt it wouldn't matter anyway.

"I had enough of this." Joshua growled.

"I said to your room!"

Another slap was coming, but Joshua evaded and dashed to the door.

"If you leave this house, then I have no son!"

"Then I'm dead to you!" Joshua shouted. "Cause your sure as hell dead to me!" He slammed the door and ran into the night.

"I thought I was dead to you, ya bastard." Joshua snarled.

The doors flew open revealing Samantha sour expression.

"Your still here?" She suspired. "Why don't you go home?"

"I'm fine." Joshua continued his training. Pain showed in his face as the intense throbbing burned through him. He coughed and fell again, unable to catch himself.

"You idiot!" Samantha ran to him and quickly began healing. "Just rest yourself and..."

Joshua's phone began to ring.

"It says your dad is calling." She turned to him after checking the name displayed. "Do you wanna ans..."

"As if I wanna hear his voice." Joshua interrupted. He stood up and was about to start forcing his body again, but exhaustion was stronger than his will this time. His eyes closed and Joshua had soon been drifted to a deep sleep.

"You got daddy issues too, huh?" Sympathy rang in Samantha's voice she removed his glasses and placed them close.

"You must have deserved a long vacation." Amber smiled at me.

We stood near her house, she twiddled her thumbs a bit and gave me a small kiss.

Her front door suddenly flew open revealing the burly man who was her father in a white T and khaki's.

"Get married already you dingbats!" Mr. O'Brien shouted. "All this lovey dovey and still no Grand child."

"Dad!" Amber shushed him. "We're still in school!"

Mr. O'Brien scratched his orange hair and sighed.

"You young ones are a headache." From his left hand was a half bottle of whiskey. "Ah I'm sure your mom would love Darren, cause I sure as hell do."

Without warning he ran to us and gave a bear hug.

"Dad you smell!" Amber gagged.

"Sorry hun." Mr. O'Brien chuckled. "Off day is my on the rocks day." He nudged me. "Heard your working for that Greek Institute lad, great thing that is."

"That's enough." Amber dragged him inside. "Goodnight Darren, Love you."

"Love you too." I waved and watched the door closed.

Night had fallen again, and for the first time in a while the quiet was deafening. Even the whispers of Malvick ceased as if he isn't apart of me anymore. I do hold onto his threats that he'll try to overtake my body.

"Just don't think about it." I told myself. "For now I have to do what I can."
