Chapter 1 - Awakening

Chapter 1: Awakening in Ruin

Darkness. Cold. The scent of earth and decay.

The first thing Kael Ardyn became aware of was the uneven, jagged surface beneath him. His body ached, as though he had been lying there for days—or years. A biting wind howled across his skin, sending a shiver through his bones. His fingers twitched against the rough ground, grasping at loose dirt and fragments of stone.

Slowly, painfully, he forced his eyes open.

Above him stretched an endless gray sky, thick clouds swirling in chaotic spirals. The sun was missing. No moon, no stars, just an oppressive void where light should be.

Where… am I?

Kael pushed himself up, his muscles screaming in protest. As he shifted, dust and small shards of stone crumbled away from his body. The air carried the scent of something ancient—like a tomb left undisturbed for centuries. He coughed, inhaling the dry, stale atmosphere, then took in his surroundings.

Ruins.

As far as his eyes could see, the landscape was filled with remnants of a long-dead civilization. Crumbling pillars, shattered statues, and fractured buildings jutted out of the earth like the bones of a forgotten corpse. Some structures still stood, though barely—massive stone towers leaning at unnatural angles, their surfaces marred by deep scars of time.

He turned in a slow circle, trying to make sense of it all. But no memory surfaced.

No home. No past.

Just his name.

Kael Ardyn.

And even that felt distant, like a whisper from a life he no longer owned.

He clenched his fists. Panic wouldn't help. He had to stay calm.

That was when the chime echoed inside his mind.

> DING!

The Kingdom System has been activated.

Kael froze.

A second later, a translucent screen flickered into existence before his eyes. Lines of glowing text spread across the floating interface, illuminating his surroundings with an eerie light.

---

[KINGDOM SYSTEM INITIALIZING…]

Welcome, Chosen Ruler. You have been granted the last remaining fragment of the Forgotten Kingdom.

[Current Status: No Land. No Subjects. No Resources.]

[First Task: Establish Your Kingdom.]

---

His breath caught in his throat.

"What… is this?" he muttered, reaching out instinctively. His fingers passed straight through the glowing text. The screen hovered in place, waiting.

A system? Like something from a game?

It made no sense, but then again—nothing about this world did. He had no memories, no sense of time, and no clue where he was. If this was the only thing offering answers, he had no choice but to listen.

Another DING!

> You have received your first item: [Founding Stone].

Kael's right hand suddenly grew heavier. He looked down and saw something new resting in his palm—a smooth, black stone engraved with glowing silver runes. The symbols pulsed faintly, as though the object was alive.

And then, a whisper—not his own—brushed against the edges of his mind.

"Plant the stone. Claim your throne."

Kael's grip tightened around the stone.

His instincts screamed at him—this was dangerous. Unnatural.

And yet…

"If I don't do this, what then?"

The ruins stretched endlessly in every direction. There were no roads. No signs of life. Just emptiness.

"I have no food. No water. If I stay here, I'll die."

That left only one choice.

Taking a deep breath, Kael lifted the Founding Stone and turned in place. His gaze fell on a relatively stable portion of the ruins—an old courtyard, its stone tiles cracked but still mostly intact. It looked like it had once been part of a grand palace or fortress.

"If this system wants me to establish a kingdom… then this is where it starts."

He walked forward, his steps echoing against the silent landscape. When he reached the center of the courtyard, he knelt and pressed the Founding Stone against the cold ground.

The moment it touched the earth, the runes flared with light.

A deep tremor shook the ruins. Dust and debris rattled from broken walls, and the air hummed with raw energy. Kael stepped back, heart pounding.

The ground beneath the stone split apart—not violently, but smoothly, as though reality itself was reshaping around it. Glowing blue lines spread outward, forming intricate geometric patterns across the courtyard.

Then, a new notification appeared.

> DING!

The Kingdom System recognizes your claim.

You have established your first settlement: [Ruined Sanctuary].

Current Rank: Village (F-Rank).

Population: 0.

Resources: 0.

Next Task: Recruit Citizens.

Kael exhaled sharply.

"It actually worked."

He looked around. The ruins felt different now—the air was no longer completely still. There was… a pulse. A faint warmth, as if something deep beneath the earth had awakened.

But there was still no one here.

"A kingdom with no people isn't a kingdom at all."

Before he could think further, a sound broke the silence—a low, ragged breath coming from the shadows of a crumbled building.

Kael spun around, heart hammering.

Someone—no, something—was watching him.

A silhouette lurched forward from the darkness.

A man. Thin. Hollow-eyed. His skin stretched tight over his bones.

But his eyes were not human. They glowed faintly, unnatural and filled with hunger.

Kael stiffened. This wasn't a survivor.

It was something else.

The first true danger of this ruined world had just found him.

And it was coming closer...
