Rooftop - After First Class]
The bell had rung not long ago, leaving the five of them—Subaru, Minerva, Kazuma, Tanya, and Ainz—gathered on the rooftop. A light breeze rustled their uniforms. Subaru stood with his eyes closed, brow furrowed in concentration.
Kazuma leaned over to Tanya, whispering with exaggerated suspicion, "What's he doing? Meditating? Trying to summon the plot?"
Tanya narrowed her eyes, equally puzzled. "No clue. That's the worrying part."
Subaru finally exhaled, rubbing his temples. "...Nothing."
Ainz tilted his skull ever so slightly. "Nothing? What do you mean nothing?"
Subaru opened one eye, looking at the undead overlord. "I tried diving into this version's memories. You know, like syncing with my other selves to get some info."
Kazuma spun on him, pointing. "You can do that?! Since when?!"
Subaru just shrugged. "I think? Sometimes? I haven't exactly had a manual."
Minerva, leaning against the railing, crossed her arms. "Don't look at me. I hit things until they're not problems anymore."
Ainz stepped forward, intrigued. "So… you're saying you're possessing your alternate self's body, but you don't have access to his memories?"
Subaru nodded. "Yup. I'm flying blind this time. And this world's Subaru? It's like his mind's been… wiped clean. No emotional residue. Nothing."
Tanya frowned. "Sounds like a trap. Or a puzzle. Either way, I hate it."
Kazuma crossed his arms. "Let me guess, some multiverse nonsense again? Another evil Subaru out there screwing things up?"
Minerva snorted. "Well, I did punch a Subaru once who claimed to be 'Beyond All Endings.' Maybe we should've followed up on that…"
Kazuma facepalmed. "Of course you didn't."
Subaru sat down on the rooftop bench, frustrated. "Every time I think I've seen it all, the multiverse throws a curveball. No memories, no weird voice in my head, not even a Return by Death trigger. It's like I'm here… but not."
Ainz's eye lights flickered. "Then there's only one logical conclusion. Someone intentionally locked this version down. Shielded it from you."
Tanya's voice went cold. "Then it's only a matter of time before they make a move."
Minerva punched her fist into her palm. "Good. Let them. I've been dying to hit something that isn't a desk."
Kazuma rolled his eyes. "You all really need hobbies."
Subaru, now back on his feet, smirked slightly. "Well, if this version of me is important enough to be locked out… then that just means we need to dig deeper."
Ainz nodded. "Agreed. But carefully. If someone's playing 5D chess, we don't want to be pawns."
Tanya grinned darkly. "Then let's flip the board."
Subaru frowned in thought, arms crossed as he stared at the sky. "It's not like someone locked me out of this version's memories… There's no real reason to do that."
Kazuma tilted his head. "Then what's the deal?"
Subaru turned to him, face serious. "Simple. This isn't my body. I can't access the memories because this version of me isn't actually… me."
A heavy silence followed his statement.
A crow cawed in the distance.
"Idiot!" it cried in a mocking tone, as if the universe itself was passing judgment.
Kazuma blinked. "Did… did that crow just call you an idiot?"
Tanya crossed her arms. "I mean, it's not wrong."
Ainz chuckled dryly. "Well, it's certainly a new level of existential horror when birds start commenting on your metaphysical state."
Minerva sighed, placing a hand on her hip. "Don't look at me. I came here to keep an eye on this idiot and maybe fix things if they go wrong—not to explain interdimensional possession rules."
Subaru scratched the back of his head. "Yeah… honestly, I thought I was just going to show up, punch a few villains, maybe fix some trauma, and head out. This is getting weird even for me."
Kazuma raised an eyebrow. "Weird for you? You realize you're a magical zombie man from another world hijacking his own multiversal clones, right?"
Subaru looked at him blankly. "...I hate how normal that sounds when you say it."
Ainz tapped his staff against the rooftop. "So, what now? We can't risk exposing too much if this version of you doesn't sync up."
Minerva shrugged. "Let's just gather data. Blend in. See how things play out. If we're lucky, this version is just another chibi-ed side character."
Tanya narrowed her eyes. "Or he's a ticking time bomb and we're sitting on top of it."
Subaru raised a hand. "Hey, come on. Let's not assume I explode every time I show up in a new universe."
Kazuma dryly responded, "I've seen you explode in three different timelines. So statistically—yeah, I'm assuming it."
Minerva facepalmed. "I miss the days when punching things fixed problems."
Kazuma raised an eyebrow as he looked at Subaru. "So… what now?"
Subaru didn't answer immediately. Instead, his gaze shifted downward as a familiar chime echoed in his mind.
Ding!
[Sequence 8: Potion of the Fool's Pathway – Digestion Progress: 40% Completed.]
He exhaled slowly, then looked back at Kazuma and the others. "We wait. Once I finish digesting the Sequence 8 of the Fool's Pathway… I'll move on to Sequence 7."
Kazuma gave a dry laugh. "Let me guess—one step closer to becoming a Beyonder, right?"
Subaru nodded. "Exactly."
Before anyone else could react, Tanya threw up her arms and screamed in frustration. "Okay, ENOUGH! I never read Lord of the Mysteries! What even are these words—Sequence, Beyonder, digestion, Fool's Pathway?! Are we just making up cryptic phrases now!?"
Her voice echoed through the area, birds scattering from nearby rooftops.
Ainz raised a bony hand in mock surrender. "Admittedly… I also don't have that novel archived in Nazarick's library."
Tanya's eyes blazed with irritation. She hated this—being uninformed, sidelined, powerless. She prided herself on control, precision, command. To be left in the dark about systems and powers others wielded—it wasn't just annoying. It was intolerable.
Subaru glanced at her silently, his eyes narrowing thoughtfully. She needs to be in control. Authority matters to her—more than it should. He watched the tight set of her jaw, the way her fists clenched. What kind of world did she come from to make her like this? A world of war, maybe? Or one where control meant survival?
Minerva gently placed a hand on Tanya's shoulder. "It's okay not to understand everything right now. But we'll explain. You're part of this team, after all."
Tanya shrugged the hand off, but her expression softened—just slightly. "Fine. But I want a full briefing, no more riddles."
Kazuma gave a lazy grin. "So, Subaru. Want to give us the non-cryptic version of what's going on before she starts requisitioning a military strike?"
Subaru sighed, nodding. "Alright. The 'Fool's Pathway' is… a progression system from another world. It lets you become stronger, smarter, more… transcendent. But it comes at a cost."
Kazuma squinted. "And the digestion part?"
"It's how the power integrates with your body and mind. You drink a potion aligned with your Sequence, then slowly digest it to avoid going insane or losing yourself. Once digestion is complete… you can move to the next Sequence."
Ainz hummed in understanding. "Fascinating. So it's not unlike acquiring classes and levels—only far more dangerous."
Tanya crossed her arms. "And you're telling me this world has things like this roaming around, and you expect me not to freak out?"
Kazuma smirked. "Welcome to the multiverse, Major."
Minerva sigher as she spoke. "The Fool pathway even do complicated it's still easy to understand unlike mine of the Salvation Pathway".
Subaru then spoke. "Or weird like Carmilla Demoness pathway which just to start if your a guy you become a girl and you get throat control as one it's ability"
Ainz, Kazuma and Tanya just looked at with a blink as Minerva clears it
"He mean Fire breathing, Swore Swallowing, Voice Control, sound Control, Music Minuplate and more"
Kazuma looked at her as he spoke. "Yeah, that is not where all of our mind went First".
Tanya crossed her arms and muttered, "I didn't even know you could weaponize a circus act."
Ainz tilted his head, fingers on his chin. "Throat control… that's certainly a unique application of mystical abilities. Sounds oddly… niche."
Minerva shrugged with a smirk. "You'd be surprised how many people fear a woman with a mic and a soul-breaking ballad."
Subaru chuckled slightly, hands in his pockets. "Yeah, not every Pathway is about blowing things up or becoming a god. Some of them are... weirdly specific."
Kazuma looked back at Subaru. "So, what, you've met Carmilla then? Or is that knowledge from before you got reset here?"
Subaru looked at Kazuma as he spoke. "Again, as I said, we had this discussion before, she lived in my soul like Minerva and all the sin, and reading LOTM comes with a Knowledge helps the fact my world has Pathway".
Kazuma sigher as he spoken. "I shouldn't have stop reading the Damm Webnovel after 200 Ch"
Tanya raised an eyebrow and muttered, "Wait… you stopped reading Lord of the Mysteries halfway through? No wonder you're so confused all the time."
Kazuma threw up his hands. "In my defense, I got bored! The plot kept twisting and turning and suddenly people were exploding just by thinking the wrong thoughts. I needed a break."
Minerva gave a soft laugh. "That's exactly why you should've kept reading. That kind of madness is half the charm."
Ainz nodded sagely. "Indeed. Knowledge, no matter how arcane or convoluted, is power. Especially when it can alter reality itself."
Tanya narrowed her eyes. "You're telling me there are beings out there that can literally rewrite the world through sheer force of will and mystical bureaucracy?"
Subaru grinned. "Welcome to the madness of the Pathways. Some people steal fate, some people whisper to the stars, and others—like me—talk to crows and juggle knives in their dreams."
Kazuma blinked. "...That explains nothing."
Subaru sighed. "Look, all you need to know is that Pathways are like professions. You start at Sequence 9 and climb up by digesting potions and meeting certain criteria. The higher you go, the weirder the powers get. Carmilla was a Sequence 4 or 3, I think."
Minerva added, "And the higher you climb, the further you drift from humanity. That's why Salvation Pathway is... difficult. At the top, you're no longer a savior. You become the concept of salvation itself."
Tanya rubbed her temples. "You know what? I'm starting to miss the simple days of guns, grenades, and being hated by God."
Kazuma pointed at her. "You're literally one divine accident away from becoming a Sequence 7, Tanya."
Tanya froze. "...I don't like how casual that sounded."
Subaru gave a mischievous smirk. "Oh, don't worry. The real fun starts when the Pathway starts talking back."
Ainz, Kazuma, and Tanya: "...The what now?"
Minerva looked at them as she Sighed. "Don't Listen to him, he is just messing with you".
Kazuma folded his arms, squinting at Subaru. "Yeah, but is he, though? I feel like with this guy, half the time he's joking, the other half he's accidentally predicting future disasters."
Subaru held up both hands with an innocent grin. "Hey, I only occasionally break causality. And I didn't mean to destabilize the dream layer that one time."
Tanya muttered, "Once is already one too many."
Ainz simply nodded, arms crossed. "I've studied undead plagues that were more predictable than you."
Minerva sighed again, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Listen, I know he sounds like an unstable idiot—but I assure you, he's a functional unstable idiot. Most of the time."
Subaru gave her a thumbs-up. "I'll take that as a compliment."
Kazuma looked at Minerva skeptically. "So you're saying you trust him with reality-warping powers?"
Minerva smirked. "No, I'm saying if he does destroy the multiverse, at least he'll feel really bad about it."
Tanya groaned. "Great. Our apocalypse is being managed by guilt."
Subaru laughed awkwardly, rubbing the back of his head. "Yeah, well, if it makes you feel better… I'm 60% done digesting my Sequence 8. So unless I accidentally ascend, you're probably safe."
Kazuma's eyes widened. "Wait. Probably?!"
Minerva waved her hand. "Don't worry. If things go wrong, we just kick him back to his Hanging Garden until he chills out."
Subaru: "That's abuse of the soul layer!"
Kazuma: "We call it crisis management."
Ainz: "We call it insurance."
Tanya: "I call it sanity preservation."
And with that, they all silently agreed: someone should probably keep an eye on Subaru... just in case.
Subaru then looked down as he spoke. "So, what's happening there".
Kazuma looked down to see the other Isekai Quartet characters playing. "Just playing a game of Football"
Subaru looked at them as he spoke. "Cool let's Join"
Ainz coughed as he spoke. "I don't think you want too, do that"
Subaru was a bit confused as he looked at Ainz. "Why is that?".
Ainz slowly raised a skeletal finger and pointed toward the field where the others were playing.
"Because," he said in a dry tone, "they're not playing football… they're playing anime protagonist deathmatch disguised as football."
Subaru squinted down at the field. At first glance, it did look like a normal game. Aqua was in the goal, yelling something about divine blessings. Megumin was charging the ball like it was a bomb. Rem had already tackled Kazuma, and Darkness was… enjoying it?
In another corner, Beatrice was floating above the field, shouting, "This is nonsense, I say! Nonsense!" while launching magical barriers to deflect the ball.
Meanwhile, Naofumi had built a shield wall in front of his goal and glared at anyone who got close.
Subaru blinked. "...Yeah, okay. That's not regulation football."
Ainz nodded. "It started with a ball. Then someone cast Explosion, and now we're three steps away from a full-on boss raid."
Kazuma groaned. "Last time I joined, I ended up getting hit by a Blessing of Water Ball to the Face and then had to respawn from the bench."
Tanya deadpanned. "You're lucky. I got hit by Aqua's 'Holy Slide Tackle.' She swore it was divine intervention."
Minerva shook her head. "And people wonder why I just sit out and drink tea."
Subaru smirked. "Still… sounds kind of fun."
Kazuma rolled his eyes. "Fun? Subaru, you nearly die once a week already. Do you want to be vaporized by a football again?"
Ainz, surprisingly, shrugged. "If you go, I'll observe. For research purposes."
Tanya snorted. "And I'll place bets. You're not lasting five minutes out there."
Subaru grinned and cracked his knuckles. "Let's see about that. If I survive Return by Death, I can survive one chaotic football match."
Kazuma sighed as he followed. "I swear if you drag me into this and I end up exorcised again, I'm blaming everything on you."
And with that, they headed down… straight into the most dangerous game of football the multiverse had ever known.
