Violet Zimmerman had just slipped half of her clothing sleeve off when Joseph Lancaster stopped her. He frowned slightly and said sternly.
"What are you doing? Even if you don't think of yourself, you should think of the child in your belly!"
It wasn't something a younger uncle should say, but Joseph Lancaster spoke without a hint of embarrassment or uncertainty, as though they were truly a married couple. At this moment, he resembled a husband concerned for his wife.
"Oh, is the young lady expecting? It's so cold outside, you should wear more, just like your husband said, so you don't catch a cold. I've heard that medications and injections aren't good for the baby."
The store clerk chimed in as though they were quite familiar with the couple, and Violet Zimmerman felt her face grow even hotter, lowering her head, wishing she could find a crack in the ground to hide.
